Messenger says a user is unavailable when you can't message them, and Meta doesn't state why. Its help pages point to a deactivated or deleted account, a block, a temporary restriction on your own account, or a technical fault. Check whether you can find their profile, then update and restart the app.
You open a chat, you go to reply, and instead of the usual message box you're told the person is unavailable. It's unsettling, especially when it's a customer or someone you were halfway through a conversation with. I'll be straight with you: Messenger doesn't give a single clear reason on screen, and Meta's help pages don't spell out the wording either. What they do give is a set of causes to check, and I'll go through them in the order I'd work through them.
Where Messenger shows a user as unavailable
The message appears in the chat itself, usually where the box for typing a reply would be, or in place of the person's name and picture. Because the wording varies by app version and device, you may see slightly different text from the version I describe. What matters is that you can't send a message to that person right now.
The causes Meta's help pages name
Messenger's help pages on messages you can't send or see list these possibilities:
- The other person has deactivated or deleted their account. Messenger's troubleshooting page tells you to check this first.
- A block. If someone has blocked you, or you've blocked them, you won't be able to message them from Messenger. The help pages describe blocking on Messenger as something you can still manage from your settings.
- A temporary restriction on your account. Facebook says sending too many messages, or messages that break its Community Standards, can lead to your account being temporarily restricted so that you can't reply.
- A problem with your own account, such as it being disabled. If you think that was a mistake, the help pages say you can ask for a review by logging in through the app.
- An ordinary technical problem, such as an out-of-date app or a poor connection.
I'll add one honest note. Many of the websites that explain this error are written by people guessing, so I've stuck to what the official pages cover. If you read something more specific elsewhere, treat it as a guess.
What to check first when Messenger says a user is unavailable
- Look for the person on Facebook. If you can't find their profile at all, they may have deactivated or deleted their account, or a block may be in place. Facebook's help says that if someone has blocked you or you've blocked them, you won't see their profile.
- Check your blocked list in your settings. If you blocked them by accident, you can remove the block.
- Ask a mutual friend, or another way of reaching them, whether the person is still active. Don't press for details if they've gone quiet.
- Check whether your own account has any restriction notices in the app.
What to try if the problem might be on your side
Messenger's troubleshooting advice is the usual set. Work through it in this order:
- Restart the app, then your phone.
- Check your internet connection.
- Update the app. If you're not sure how, I've written a guide to updating Messenger on your phone.
- Try Messenger in a web browser, or the Facebook app, to see whether the same message appears there.
- Reinstall the app and sign in again.
If the same person looks fine on another device, the issue was probably a glitch in your app. If they look unavailable everywhere, it's about their account or a block.
Does Messenger saying user unavailable mean you've been blocked?
It might, but it isn't proof. Facebook doesn't tell you when someone blocks you, and the same message can appear if their account is gone. A deactivated account can come back, so a person can be unavailable one day and reachable again later. I wouldn't read too much into it. If it matters, for example a client you've lost touch with, try another channel such as email or a phone call. For safety, don't try to get round a block. If someone has chosen to cut contact, respect that. And if you're being threatened, report it to the platform and, if you're in danger, contact the police.
What Messenger unavailable means for a business Page
If a customer's name suddenly shows as unavailable, don't assume you've done anything wrong. They may have closed their account. Keep your records of orders and enquiries somewhere other than Messenger, so a vanished account doesn't take the history with it. I also keep a working email address on every enquiry form so that I'm never relying on one platform.
What not to do when Messenger says a user is unavailable
It's tempting to start trying everything, so here's my short list of things to avoid. Don't create a second account to contact someone who may have blocked you. Don't ask friends to pass messages on if the person clearly doesn't want contact. Don't keep reinstalling the app dozens of times hoping the label changes. And ignore websites that promise to reveal who blocked you, because Facebook doesn't offer that information and those promises are usually a way to get you to hand over your details.

A calmer approach works better. Rule out your own app, make one sensible check of their profile, and then move on to another way of reaching them if you need to. Most of the time the answer is simply that the account is gone or contact has been closed.

A missing profile can look similar to a deleted page. My guide to what a Facebook page not found message means goes through what's happening in that case. And if you're trying to reach someone who's simply hard to find, see how to find someone on Messenger.
When to contact Meta about Messenger unavailable errors
If you've done the checks above and you think your own account is being restricted wrongly, use the review option in the app, or the Messenger help centre's contact routes. For the other person's account, there's nothing you can do from your side.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Messenger say this person is unavailable?
Meta's help pages point to a deactivated or deleted account, a block, a temporary restriction on your account, or a technical problem. Messenger doesn't say which.
Does unavailable on Messenger mean I'm blocked?
Not necessarily. A block is one possible cause, but the person may also have deactivated or deleted their account.
Can an unavailable user become available again?
If the cause is a deactivated account that's later reactivated, or a block that's later removed, yes. You won't be notified either way.
Should I reinstall Messenger?
It's a reasonable late step. Messenger's help suggests restarting, checking your connection, updating and reinstalling before concluding the fault is elsewhere.
Is there a way to see who blocked me on Messenger?
No. Facebook doesn't tell you when you've been blocked, and I wouldn't try workarounds. If you need to reach the person, use another channel.
