How to Find Someone on Messenger: Search, Contacts, Facebook

To find someone on Messenger, tap the search bar at the top of your chats and type their name. For someone you haven't chatted with, search for them on Facebook by name, then message them from their profile. A block or privacy settings can stop their profile appearing.

Finding someone on Messenger is really two different jobs, and mixing them up is why people get stuck. One is finding a person you've already chatted with. The other is finding a person you haven't spoken to yet. Messenger's help pages treat them separately, so I will too. I'm using what the official help says, and I'll flag where menus vary by app version.

How to find someone on Messenger you've already chatted with

Messenger's help centre explains that you can search your conversations from the top of your inbox. On a computer you click Search Messenger. In the app, look for the search bar at the top of your chats.

  1. Open Messenger and go to your chats.
  2. Tap or click the search bar at the top.
  3. Type the person's name. Messenger's help says you can also search for a business, a service, a place, a phone number or text from a conversation.
  4. Pick the person from the results to open the chat.

If nothing shows up, the help page suggests checking three things: whether you blocked the person, whether the conversation was deleted or archived, and whether your chat history has synced to the device you're using.

How to find someone on Messenger who isn't in your chats yet

Messenger leans on Facebook for this. The help pages say you can find people through search and through People You May Know suggestions on Facebook, and by uploading your contacts from your phone or email accounts. To search by name, use the search at the top left of Facebook, type your friend's name and press Enter. Then choose the People filter, where the help says you can narrow results by city, education, work and mutual friends.

Once you've found their profile, you can start a chat from there. Button labels vary by app version, so look for a Message button on their profile.

Using Messenger contacts to find people

Messenger's help describes Messenger contacts as the settings that let you manage how you find and connect with people. If you upload your phone contacts, Messenger can suggest people you already know. That's useful if you want to reach a customer whose number you have but whose profile name you don't remember. Only upload contacts if you're comfortable with that, and check the privacy options inside the app first.

Why you can't find someone on Messenger

Facebook's own help article for friends who aren't showing up gives reasons worth ruling out:

  • A block. The help says if you've blocked someone, or they've blocked you, you won't see their profile.
  • Privacy settings. When you search by networks, some people may not show up, depending on how they've set the About section of their profile.
  • A deactivated or deleted account. I've covered what that looks like in my guide to why Messenger says a user is unavailable.
  • A common name. Add a city, workplace or school to the search, or use the filters.

I can't tell you which one applies, and neither can Messenger. If a block is the cause, Facebook doesn't tell you. I'd advise against hunting for workarounds. If someone's chosen to cut contact, respecting that is the kind thing to do, and if you're being harassed, report it to the platform and, if you're in danger, contact the police.

Finding a business on Messenger

If you're looking for a company, search its name from Messenger's search bar or from Facebook, then open its Page and use the message button. For your own business, make it easy for people. Put your Page name in your email signature and on your receipts, so customers searching for you land on the right Page and not a similarly named one.

Does the person know you looked for them on Messenger?

Searching for someone doesn't send them a notice, as far as Facebook's help says. If you're curious, my article on whether Facebook tells someone you check their profile goes into what's visible and what isn't.

Finding someone on Messenger from a phone or a computer

The steps are very similar on both. On a phone, the search bar sits at the top of your chats in the Messenger app. On a computer, Messenger's help refers to Search Messenger at the top of your inbox. For finding people you haven't messaged, use the search on Facebook itself, in the app or on the website. Labels differ between app versions, so look for the magnifying glass icon if the words have changed.

Tips for searching for someone on Messenger more accurately

  • Try the name the way they use it on Facebook, which may be a nickname or a married name.
  • Add a detail the filters can use, such as the city, the school or a workplace.
  • Look at mutual friends. A friend you share can often point you to the right profile.
  • For customers, ask them to message your Page first. Then they're in your chats and easy to find again.
  • Make sure you're logged in to the account you expect, because a second account has a different set of chats.

If you run a business, a pinned message or a saved reply with your Page name saves everybody time. People searching for you will thank you for a name that's easy to spot.

Safety when you message someone you've just found on Messenger

A short first message is polite and sensible. Say who you are and why you're getting in touch. If the person doesn't reply, don't send a stream of follow-ups. A single gentle nudge is enough. Be cautious with people who contact you first and ask for bank details or codes, and report anything that seems off.

If you can't find a friend on Messenger at all

Try these in order: search by their full name, search from the Facebook app instead of Messenger, add a mutual detail like a town or school, check your blocked list, and ask a mutual friend to share their profile with you. If you're still stuck, you may simply not be able to see their profile, and that's the platform working as intended.

And if you're new to the app itself, my plain guide on what the Messenger app is helps explain how Messenger and Facebook fit together.
