Delivered on Messenger is the stage after sent and before seen, and Messenger's Help Centre shows it as a filled-in blue circle with a check. Seen appears as a small version of the person's profile picture. Delivered doesn't mean they've read it.
If you've ever stared at a tiny circle under a message wondering whether anyone has seen it, you're in good company. Messenger uses four little signals to tell you where your message has got to, and the difference between sent and delivered trips most people up. Here's what each one means according to Messenger's own help pages, what they look like, and what to check when a message sits on one stage for ages. It's useful if you answer customers on Messenger too, because you'll know when a message has reached them and when it hasn't.
What Delivered means on Messenger
Delivered is the third stage of a message's journey. Messenger's Help Centre says Messenger uses different icons to let you know when your messages have been sent, delivered and seen, and they appear on the right side of the message. A filled-in blue circle with a check means that your message has been delivered.
The help article doesn't spell out the technical detail of delivery, so I'll keep to what it says: sent means it left your device, delivered comes next, and seen means the other person has viewed it.
The four Messenger message icons, one by one
| Stage | What you see, per Messenger's Help Centre | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Sending | A blue circle | Your message is on its way and hasn't been sent yet |
| Sent | A blue circle with a check | Your message has been sent |
| Delivered | A filled-in blue circle with a check | Your message has been delivered |
| Seen | A small version of the person's profile picture below the message | They've seen it |
Menus and icons can vary by app version. Older Messenger help wording describes Sending, Sent and Seen notices that appear in grey text below your most recent message in a chat, and says Sent means your message has been successfully sent from your device but hasn't been seen by others yet. So if your app shows words rather than circles, you're looking at the older style.
What Seen looks like in one-to-one chats and group chats
In a chat with one person, you'll see their small profile picture beneath your message once they've seen it. In group chats, Messenger's older help wording says a small version of someone's profile picture appears below a message when they've seen it, so you can see who has looked. On Facebook on a computer, the help says your friend's profile picture appears as a small circle below the message when they've seen it.
There's a separate article on the Facebook side for checking read status from a computer, and it makes a point of saying it's about messages from your Facebook account on a computer. If you want to know whether you can hide your own seen notice, I looked into that in my guide to turning off read receipts on Messenger.
Why is my Messenger message stuck on Sent or Sending?
Facebook's help pages don't explain why a message might stay on one stage. What they do provide is a troubleshooting article for when you're having trouble sending messages. It suggests trying these, in order:
- Update your Messenger app to the latest version.
- Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Make sure your device has enough storage.
- Close the Messenger app and restart your device.
- Make sure the person you're replying to hasn't deactivated or deleted their account.
- Make sure you haven't blocked them and they haven't blocked you.
- In a group chat, check that other members haven't left the conversation.
It also lists some reasons you can't send: you sent a lot of messages recently, your messages went against Community Standards (which may temporarily restrict your account), or there are problems with your app, device or internet. Facebook says a block of that kind is temporary.
Does Delivered mean the other person has read it?
No. Delivered sits before Seen, so it tells you the message has moved past sent, not that anyone has looked at it. A person may have notifications off, muted the chat or just not opened it yet. I'd also resist reading anything into the gap. Nothing in Messenger's help says that a message stuck on delivered means someone has blocked you, and I'd rather not guess. If you do want to stop contact yourself, blocking someone on Messenger is a clear, official option.

Delivered, Active Status and the green dot are different things
These three get confused all the time:
- Delivered tells you about one message you sent.
- Seen tells you the other person has viewed it.
- Active Status shows whether someone is active or recently active. I've explained the little dot in my guide to the green dot on Facebook and Messenger.
What Delivered means for customers messaging your business
If you handle enquiries through Messenger, delivered is your first checkpoint. It tells you your reply has got through, so if a customer says they didn't receive an answer, you can check whether it shows delivered. If it doesn't, the troubleshooting list above is where I'd start. A short, friendly follow-up works well once a message shows seen but the customer hasn't answered, something like, Just checking this made sense, shout if you need anything else. That's my suggestion, not something from Facebook's help.
When to contact Facebook about Messenger message problems
If you've tried the list above and a message still won't send, Facebook's article points to reporting your issue to their team, learning how to fix sending errors and other problems on Messenger, and how to make sure the Messenger app keeps working. On a computer you can click your profile picture, choose Help and support and then Report a problem, according to the Help Centre.
Frequently asked questions
What does delivered mean on Messenger?
According to the Messenger Help Centre, a filled-in blue circle with a check means your message has been delivered. It comes after sent and before seen.
Is delivered the same as seen on Messenger?
No. Seen appears when the other person has viewed the message, shown as a small version of their profile picture below it.
What does the blue circle with a check mean?
Messenger's Help Centre says a blue circle with a check means your message has been sent. A filled-in blue circle with a check means delivered.
Why does my Messenger message say Sent but not Delivered?
The help pages don't give a single reason. Check your connection, update the app, make sure your device has enough storage and restart it, then check the other person hasn't deactivated their account.
Can I tell if someone blocked me from the icons?
Messenger's help pages don't say that a stuck icon means you've been blocked, so I wouldn't assume it.
