Messenger says unable to send when your message can't be delivered. According to its help centre, the causes are a poor connection or outdated app, sending too many messages too quickly, or a problem on the other person's side such as a block, a deleted account or leaving the group. Try the connection and app first.
You type a message, tap send and Messenger refuses. It's maddening, especially when the message is for a customer or a deadline. The good news is that the causes are a short list, and Messenger's help centre names most of them. Below I've put them in the order I'd check them, from the quickest fix to the ones you can't control. Menus vary by app version, but the logic doesn't change.
What the Messenger unable to send message means
The wording changes: Unable to send, This message didn't send, Couldn't send, or a red warning symbol beside the message. They all mean the same thing: your message didn't leave your device or Messenger wouldn't deliver it. Messenger's help centre has an article called Unable to send or see messages on Messenger, and it groups the causes into three buckets: something about your own account activity, something about your app, device or connection, and something about the person you're writing to.
First, rule out a Messenger connection or app problem
Start here, because it's the commonest and quickest to fix. The help centre's fixes are:
- Check your internet connection and switch to a stable one, for example moving from patchy mobile data to Wi-Fi.
- Close Messenger completely and open it again.
- Restart your phone or computer.
- Update the Messenger app. If you're not sure how, my guide to updating Messenger walks through it.
- Check your device has some free storage. The help centre lists storage space among the things that can matter.
If you use Messenger in a browser, update the browser and try again, or try a different one.
Have you sent too many Messenger messages recently?
This is the cause people don't expect. Messenger's help article on limits explains that Messenger limits how many messages people can send, mainly to reduce spam and unwanted messages. If you've sent a lot of messages in a short time, you may be unable to send for a while. The help pages say that being warned about sending too many messages or sending them too quickly means you'll need to slow down or you may lose the ability to send.
That affects small businesses more than anyone. Messaging many people who aren't your friends or contacts can trigger a warning or a temporary block. Facebook's related help page says these limits depend on factors such as speed and quantity, and it doesn't give exact numbers. The block is temporary, and a temporary block doesn't stop you reaching confirmed friends through other Facebook features. Once it ends, message only people you know and use the name you go by in everyday life.
Could the other person's account be the reason Messenger can't send?
Sometimes the problem sits on their side. The help centre names these situations:
- They've blocked you. Messenger doesn't announce this, and it's one possible reason for messages not sending. I explain the signs in my guide to knowing if someone blocked you on Facebook.
- Their account has been deleted or deactivated.
- They've left the group chat you're trying to message.
If the person's name has changed to something unfamiliar or the profile won't open, my explainer on why Messenger says user unavailable is the next one to read.
When Facebook restricts your account from messaging
The help centre also says that if you've broken Facebook's Community Standards, your account may be temporarily restricted, which can stop you replying to messages. If a notice about a restriction has appeared in your Facebook account, follow what it says. Don't create a new account to get round it, because that tends to make things worse.

Unable to send a message on Messenger: the order to try things in
| Try this | Why |
|---|---|
| Check Wi-Fi or mobile data | A weak connection is the commonest cause |
| Restart the app and the device | Clears a stuck session |
| Update Messenger | Old versions can fail to send |
| Free up storage | The help centre lists storage as a factor |
| Slow down and wait | You may have hit a sending limit |
| Check the other person's account | Blocked, deleted, deactivated or left the group |
If Messenger still says unable to send
If you've done all of that and nothing changes, the help centre says to report the problem so Facebook can look at it. Messenger's help centre has a separate article on reporting a problem with the Messenger app. Describe what happens and when it started, and include what you were trying to send. Don't give anyone your password for 'help' with this. Facebook's help pages say Meta representatives won't ask for your password over chat, so anyone who does is a red flag.
In the meantime, reach the person another way. For anything urgent, a text or a call beats waiting for a fix.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Messenger say unable to send?
Messenger's help centre lists the common causes: a poor connection or an outdated app, a sending limit after lots of messages in a short time, or an issue with the other person's account such as a block, deletion or leaving the group.
Is Messenger unable to send a sign that I've been blocked?
It can be one reason, according to the help centre, but it isn't proof, because the same error also comes from connection problems and sending limits.
How long does a Messenger sending block last?
The help pages say a block from sending is temporary, but they don't give an exact length.
Can sending too many messages stop Messenger working?
Yes. Messenger limits how many messages people can send to reduce spam, and being warned about sending too many or too fast means you should slow down.
Will updating Messenger fix the unable to send error?
It's one of the fixes the help centre lists, along with restarting the app and your device and switching to a stable connection.
What if nothing works?
Report the problem to Messenger through the help centre, then contact the person another way in the meantime.
