Where to Learn AI Skills in India in 2026 (Free and Paid Options That Work)

The short version: the best AI learning in India right now is a mix of free courses from Google and Microsoft, one paid specialisation if you can afford between Rs 30,000 and Rs 2.5 lakh, and a portfolio of small projects you build yourself, in that order. Skip the certificate-heavy bootcamps that promise a job at the end. Nobody hires you because of a certificate, they hire you because you can show them something you built with AI that solved a real problem.

Why this question is harder than it sounds

I get asked this constantly, usually by someone in Pune or Bengaluru who has watched three YouTube videos, panicked, and paid Rs 45,000 for a bootcamp they haven’t finished. India has more AI course options than almost any other country right now, which is exactly the problem. NASSCOM says India will need around 1 million AI-skilled professionals by 2026, and every training company from IIT to a random Instagram page selling a “ChatGPT mastery course” wants a piece of that demand. Most of them are fine. Very few of them are worth your money over the free stuff.

Start with the free options, because they are strong now

Five years ago free AI courses were thin and outdated within months. That’s changed. The tools have moved fast enough that the free tier is now built by the same companies making the AI, and they update it constantly because it’s their product.

  • Google AI Essentials (Coursera), roughly Rs 2,900 for the certificate or free to audit, teaches prompting and practical use cases in about 10 hours. Solid for someone who has never touched an AI tool professionally.
  • Microsoft AI Skills Navigator, entirely free, maps courses to actual job roles, which matters if you don’t know yet whether you want to go into data, into marketing, or into building tools.
  • Kaggle Learn, free, and the closest thing to a hands-on lab for anyone wanting to move into machine learning rather than just prompting.
  • YouTube channels built by Indian educators, CampusX run by Nitish Singh, and Krish Naik’s channel, both free, both taught in a mix of Hindi and English that a lot of paid courses charge four figures for.

My honest take here, and I’ll say it plainly because most people writing about this won’t: a huge chunk of the paid AI courses in India are repackaging content you can get for free, with a certificate stapled on the end for the psychological comfort of having paid for something. The certificate feels like proof of commitment. Employers rarely care.

Government and subsidised programmes worth a proper look

There’s a layer of Indian AI training that’s cheap or free because it’s backed by government or industry bodies, and it gets ignored because it doesn’t market itself as loudly as the private bootcamps.

  • NASSCOM FutureSkills Prime, a joint initiative with MeitY, offers a large catalogue of AI and data courses, many free, some subsidised for reskilling programmes. Worth checking before you pay anyone.
  • IIT Madras BS in Data Science and Applications, a pay-as-you-go degree where you pay per course rather than upfront, total cost lands somewhere around Rs 3 to 3.5 lakh for the full degree but you can stop after the foundation level for under Rs 40,000 and still walk away with a real qualification.
  • IISc Bangalore’s E&ICT programmes, run through Talentsprint, tend to sit in the Rs 1.5 to 2.5 lakh range and carry more weight on a CV than most private bootcamp names, because IISc’s name does the heavy lifting.
  • Skill India Digital lists AI-adjacent short courses, patchy in quality but free, and worth a scroll if you’re in a smaller city without access to in-person training.

Paid bootcamps and where the money goes

If you want structure, deadlines, and someone checking your work, paid programmes still earn their place. Here’s roughly what the market looks like in 2026:

  • upGrad’s AI/ML programmes with IIIT Bangalore or Liverpool John Moores University, typically Rs 2.5 to 3.5 lakh, 9 to 12 months, strong for career switchers who want the university branding.
  • Scaler’s AI and ML course, around Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh, built more for working engineers wanting to add AI to existing coding skills than for total beginners.
  • Great Learning’s PG Programme in AI and ML, around Rs 2.3 to 2.6 lakh with Great Lakes or UT Austin branding, strong placement support on paper, mixed results in practice depending on which cohort you land in.
  • Analytics Vidhya’s Blackbelt Plus, roughly Rs 35,000 to 70,000 depending on the track, practical and built by people who work in the field rather than pure academics.
  • Simplilearn’s AI Engineer Masters, around Rs 1.2 to 1.8 lakh, decent for self-paced learners who need flexibility around a full time job.

Notice the spread. You are not paying for content quality, mostly, you’re paying for structure, accountability, a cohort, and a name on a certificate. All of those have value. None of them are worth going into debt for.

A real example: what worked for one learner

A woman named Priya, who I mentored briefly through a small business group in 2025, worked in a Coimbatore call centre answering billing queries for a UK telecoms client. She had no coding background, no degree in anything technical, and about two hours a day she could give to learning after her shift.

She did the free Google AI Essentials course first, over about ten days. Then she spent six weeks building small things nobody asked her to build: she used ChatGPT to draft call scripts for common complaint types, built a simple prompt library for her team, and used it to summarise long client emails into three-line action points. None of it was glamorous. All of it was useful.

She put those examples, screenshots and all, into a one-page portfolio and applied for remote freelance work on Upwork under “AI-assisted customer support and content.” Within four months she was earning around Rs 38,000 to 45,000 a month doing part-time freelance work for two small US businesses, on top of her regular job, before deciding to go freelance full time. She never paid for a single course. She spent money on nothing except a decent internet connection and time.

I tell that story because it contradicts what most training companies want you to believe, which is that you need their programme to get anywhere. Priya’s path looked more like the model I’ve seen work in building income from skills you already have: find what you’re already doing, use AI to do it faster or better, prove it with examples, then charge for it.

The step by step version, 90 days

If you want a plan rather than a list of options, here’s roughly what I’d tell someone starting from nothing:

  • Days 1 to 10: do Google AI Essentials or Microsoft’s free navigator course. Don’t skip this to jump straight to “advanced” content, most people who do that never build the basic habit of using AI tools daily.
  • Days 11 to 30: pick one specific problem in your current job or an existing side skill and use AI tools to solve it every day. Transcription, writing, data cleaning, scheduling, anything real.
  • Days 31 to 50: take one paid course, if you want, but pick it based on the specific gap the free content didn’t cover, not because it looks impressive.
  • Days 51 to 70: build three small projects you can show someone. Screenshots, before-and-after comparisons, a short write-up of what you did and what it saved.
  • Days 71 to 90: apply for something, freelance work, an internal role change, a client. Use the projects as proof, not the certificates.

The certificate problem nobody wants to say out loud

I’ve sat on the other side of hiring decisions for years, and I’ll be blunt: a certificate from a six-week AI bootcamp tells me almost nothing about whether someone can do the job. It tells me they finished a course. Plenty of people finish courses and still can’t write a decent prompt or catch an obvious AI hallucination in a client report. What gets someone hired or booked for freelance work is evidence they’ve used the skill on a real problem, ideally one similar to the work they’re applying for.

This is uncomfortable for the training industry because certificates are the product they sell. The right answer to “where should I learn AI skills” depends entirely on what you already have.

  • If you’re a student with time but little money, IIT Madras’s pay-per-course model or a free NASSCOM FutureSkills Prime course is the better starting point than a private bootcamp.
  • If you’re employed and want to add AI to your current role, skip the long programmes entirely and spend your time applying free tools to your actual job for a month before you pay anyone anything.
  • If you’re already doing skilled freelance work, transcription, typing, virtual assistance, the fastest AI upskilling is usually adding AI tools to that existing skill rather than starting an unrelated AI course. Someone doing work-from-home typing work who learns to use AI for formatting, proofreading, and speed will out-earn someone with a generic AI certificate and no client base.
  • If you’re switching careers entirely from something unrelated, a structured paid programme with a cohort and deadlines, like Scaler or upGrad, helps with accountability. Just go in knowing the projects you build matter more than the certificate you get.

What I’d avoid completely

A few patterns I’ve watched play out badly, repeatedly, over the last two years:

  • Courses that promise a “guaranteed job” for a fee above Rs 1 lakh with no named hiring partners. Read the fine print, most placement guarantees are really interview guarantees.
  • Anything sold entirely through an Instagram reel with urgency language, “only 10 seats left” for an online course has no real seat limit.
  • Generic “prompt engineering” certificates that cost Rs 15,000 to 25,000 and cover material Google’s free course covers in an afternoon.
  • Paying for a course before spending even one week testing the free version of the skill yourself. If you don’t enjoy using AI tools on real problems in week one, a paid course won’t fix that.
