On Facebook, top contributor is a group badge for people who are among the most active members of that group. It sits between rising contributor and all-star contributor, and it shows by their name on posts and comments. It isn't a Facebook-wide title, and it doesn't make someone an admin.
You open a Facebook group, and next to somebody's name there's a little badge saying Top contributor. It looks official, so you wonder whether it means they run the group, whether you can ask them for help, or whether Facebook has checked them in some way.
It doesn't mean any of those. I've read what Facebook's help centre says about group badges, and the real meaning is simpler and a bit more interesting. It also matters if you run a group for your business, because you decide whether these badges appear at all.
What a top contributor badge means on Facebook
According to the help centre, a contributor badge goes to people who are among the most active participants in a Facebook group. There are three levels: rising contributor, top contributor and all-star contributor. Top contributor is the middle one.
So it's a sign of activity in that one group. It isn't a Facebook-wide title, and it doesn't say the person is an expert or a staff member. The help centre says members, admins and moderators can all receive these badges.
Where you'll see a Facebook top contributor badge
The badge shows up in three places: by the person's name on their posts, by their name on their comments, and on their group member profile. It stays inside that group. Someone can be a top contributor in one group and have no badge in another.
How people get a top contributor badge on Facebook
The help centre says you get there by taking part and getting responses to what you share. You gain points when:
- Other members reply or react to your posts.
- Other members reply or react to your comments.
- You're an admin or moderator of the group.
- You're a group expert.
The help centre doesn't publish a points total or a cut-off for each level, so I can't tell you how many it takes to reach top contributor. Anyone who quotes you an exact number is guessing. What it does make clear is that useful posts and comments that start conversations are what count.
Top contributor versus top voice on Facebook
These two sound alike and they aren't the same. Top voice is a separate role in Facebook groups for members who consistently create high-quality posts and comments that are valuable to their community. The help centre says Facebook is gradually introducing it, so it may not be available for every group yet.
| Top contributor | Top voice | |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | A level of contributor badge | A role for valued community members |
| How it's given | Points from replies and reactions | Nomination, reviewed by group admins |
| Where it shows | By your name in the group | By your name in the group |
A few top voice details from the help centre: you can be nominated automatically, you receive the role 7 days after a nomination unless an admin declines it, and an admin can also add any member to the role. Members with the role may get their posts published automatically, even if the group needs post approval. That's a real privilege and the badge alone doesn't give it, so don't assume a top contributor has it.
Why a Facebook top contributor badge can disappear
This causes a lot of confusion. The help centre names the reasons:
- If you had a badge and no longer see it, the group admins might have turned off the Contributions feature.
- If you know you're a top contributor but haven't received the badge, the admins may have turned the feature off.
- If it's a public group and you aren't a member or an admin or moderator, you may not get the badge there.
There's also a choice on your side. If you have a badge but don't want to show it, Facebook's help centre says you can manage which badges appear by your name. Groups also let members turn off their own badges.
How to turn Facebook contributor badges on or off in your group
If you manage the group, you're in control. Facebook says admins can turn badges on or off for the entire group, but not for individual members. To switch all badges on or off, go to your group on a computer and:

To add or remove contributor badges specifically, the help centre points you to Add features (you may have to click Manage first), then Settings next to Contributions. Click Toggle next to the option that lets members display contributor badges.
Is a Facebook top contributor badge worth having for your business
If you use groups to meet potential customers, a visible badge is a small trust signal. It tells new members that the person is active and gets responses. I'd never chase it, though. Be useful in the group and it tends to follow. My guide to finding Facebook groups for marketers is a good starting point if you're choosing where to be active.
If you run your own group, you may also want to check when your Facebook group was created before you set up badges and other features.
Questions to ask before trusting a Facebook top contributor
- Is their advice backed up by something you can check?
- Do they say who they work for, if they're recommending a product?
- Are other members agreeing with them, or just reacting?
A badge shows activity. It doesn't show accuracy, so treat what a top contributor says like any other member's advice.
