Discord's official name font feature is called Display Name Styles: you pick one of 12 fonts, one of 7 effects and a colour for your display name. It's a Nitro feature, so anyone can preview styles on mobile or desktop, but you need Nitro to save one to your profile.
Two catches before you spend anything. There's no free official way to change your name font, as of October 2026. And in servers, only the font survives: your colour and effect are replaced by your server role colour or enhanced role style. If what you want is to change the name itself rather than how it looks, that's a different job, covered in my guide to changing your Discord name.
The 12 fonts and 7 effects
| Choice | Options |
|---|---|
| Fonts | gg sans (the default), Tempo, Sakura, Jellybean, Modern, Medieval, 8Bit, Vampyre, Monkey Bars, Mainframe, Headbang, Journal |
| Effects | Solid, Gradient, Neon, Toon, Pop, Gummy, Prism |
| Colours | A preset palette, or Custom Color for any shade |
A few details that change what you'll pick:
- Gradient lets you choose two colours, and it has no Default colour option.
- Prism lets you choose five colours.
- Solid is the only effect where you can apply no colour at all.
- The Default box puts the colour back to normal.
- Surprise Me gives you random font, colour and effect combinations if you're stuck.
- Light and dark mode preview buttons show how it looks in both themes before you apply it.
How to set your name font
On desktop:
- Click your username at the bottom left, then Edit Profile. You can also get there through User Settings, then Edit Profiles.
- Under Display Name Style, press the + button.
- Pick a font, an effect and a colour, or try Surprise Me.
- Check the light and dark previews, then apply.
On mobile, open the You bar, tap Edit Profile, then Display Name Style, choose Font, Effect or Color, and tap Apply.
Where your style shows, and where it doesn't
This is the part most people don't expect. Your full style only appears in some places:
| Place | What shows |
|---|---|
| Profile panel and profile card | Font, colour and effect |
| DMs and group chats | Font in messages; the full style on hover |
| DM list | Font only; hover for colour and effect |
| Servers | Font only; your role colour or enhanced role style replaces colour and effect |
| Mobile app | Font, colour and effect, but static with no animation |
Per-server profiles can carry their own style, so you can set a different look for each server you're in.
Why your colour disappears in servers
In a server, other members see your font, but not the colour or effect you picked. The server's role colour, or its enhanced role style, shows instead. So if you're mainly active in one big community, the effect you chose may barely be seen there, while the font still comes through.
Mobile, symbols and fallback fonts
The mobile app shows fonts, colours and effects without animation, so Neon or Prism won't move on a phone. And some symbols may not display in the custom fonts. When that happens they fall back to gg sans, which can make a name with special characters look patchy. If your name relies on symbols, check it in the preview first.

How to stop seeing other people's styles
If the fonts and animations make chat hard to read, you can switch them off for yourself:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Desktop: User Settings, then Accessibility, then the Display Name Styles toggle.
- Mobile: You bar, then the cogwheel, then Accessibility, then Display Name Styles.
That only changes what you see. Everyone else still sees the styles as normal.

My verdict
If you've already got Nitro, have a play: Surprise Me is the quickest way to find a combination you like, and the preview costs nothing. I wouldn't buy Nitro for this alone if you spend most of your time in servers, because that's where colour and effect get replaced. For fancy text inside messages instead, Discord's own text formatting options are free.
Frequently asked questions
Can you change your font on Discord for free?
Not with Discord's official feature. Display Name Styles is a Nitro feature: you can preview styles without Nitro, but you can't save them to your profile.
How many fonts does Discord have for display names?
12: gg sans (the default), Tempo, Sakura, Jellybean, Modern, Medieval, 8Bit, Vampyre, Monkey Bars, Mainframe, Headbang and Journal.
Why doesn't my name colour show in a Discord server?
In servers, only the font displays. Your server role colour or enhanced role style replaces the colour and effect you picked.
Why isn't my Discord name effect animated on my phone?
The mobile app shows fonts, colours and effects as static, without animation.
Can I use a different name style in each Discord server?
Yes. Display Name Styles show on per-server profiles, and you can set a style per server, but in servers only the font displays.
How do I turn off other people's name styles on Discord?
On desktop go to User Settings, then Accessibility, and switch off Display Name Styles. On mobile it's You bar, then the cogwheel, then Accessibility.
