TikTok Age Verification: Age Appeals, Underage Bans and Deadlines

TikTok asks you to verify your age when you appeal a decision it made because it thinks you're too young: either it removed an age-restricted feature such as LIVE or direct messages, or it banned your whole account as under 13. You prove your age inside the appeal, with options like a selfie with ID, a parent or guardian, credit card authorization or facial age estimation, and your deadline depends on which of the two you're facing and where you live.

The catch: two age processes with different clocks

TikTok runs two separate processes, and mixing them up is how people miss their window. An age appeal is about features. TikTok can remove your access to LIVE, buying Coins or direct messages if it believes you're under the minimum age for them, while your account carries on. An underage appeal is about the whole account, banned because TikTok believes you're under 13.

Look hard at the U.S. figures. You get 23 days to appeal and download your data, and the account is deleted on day 30. That's a lot tighter than anywhere else in the table. Everything on this page comes from TikTok's own help pages (source: TikTok Help Center, read October 2026), and the menu and button names are written the way TikTok writes them.

How to appeal a removed age-restricted feature

  1. Open the notification in the TikTok app.
  2. Tap Appeal to begin the appeal process.
  3. Follow the instructions provided. TikTok notifies you of the result.

Depending on your age and location, you'll confirm your age in one of these ways:

MethodAgeWhat you provide
Selfie with ID16 or olderA photo of your government-issued ID, plus a selfie holding the same ID and a piece of paper with a unique code TikTok sends you
Ask your parent or guardian16 to 17Their email address; they confirm your date of birth on mobile and give credit card details to show they're over 18
Photo with parent/guardian16 to 17A photo of you with a parent, guardian or other trusted adult over 25, holding a paper titled "TikTok proof of age" with your date of birth and the unique code
Credit card authorization18 or olderYour credit card details for a small, temporary charge that's refunded

A few details that save a second attempt. You can cover any parts of your ID you have a legal right or obligation to cover. Parents and guardians don't need a TikTok account, but confirmation only works on mobile, so on a computer they'll scan the QR code or copy the link to a mobile browser. In the photo option, both faces must be clear and the adult must look at the camera. If a parent isn't available, TikTok gives a grandparent, teacher or aunt or uncle as examples of a trusted adult.

While you wait, you can use the Download your data tool. You have 30 days from creation to request LIVE Replays, and 113 days (180 in the EEA, 23 in the U.S.) to request your direct messages, as long as they don't break the Community Guidelines. If the appeal isn't approved and you're 13 to 17, LIVE Replays are deleted 30 days after they were created. If you're 13 to 15, the removal of direct messaging stays, though you can still request your messages.

How to appeal an underage account ban

  1. Open the appeal notification.
  2. Tap Appeal to begin the appeal process.
  3. Follow the instructions provided. TikTok notifies you of the result.
  • ID and selfies: photos of your government-issued ID plus 3 selfies taken from different angles.
  • Selfie with ID through Incode: your ID, a selfie taken in real time and agreement to Incode's terms. You get 15 minutes, and if you exit early you wait 15 minutes before trying again. Incode then asks you to share your date of birth with TikTok; decline and TikTok can't confirm your age.
  • Credit card authorization if you're 18 or over, with a small temporary charge that's refunded.
  • Facial age estimation: a real-time selfie with your face fully in the frame. Take off hats that cast shadows; glasses can stay on. It may not be offered in your location or at your age.

You'll need to give an email address for these options, because a banned account gets its result by email. Have your ID ready before you start the Incode route so the 15 minutes don't run out. Incode keeps what you submit, and you can delete it from your Incode account.

Download your data before the window shuts

  1. Tap Download your data from the account ban notification.
  2. Select a file format, then tap Request data.
  3. When TikTok notifies you, tap the in-app notification with your data details.
  4. Tap Download data.

The file can take a few days to prepare and stays available for up to 4 days once it's ready. After day 113 (day 180 in the EEA, U.K. or Switzerland, day 23 in the U.S.) the tool stops working. If your appeal is approved, TikTok unbans the account and your data isn't deleted.

What happens to your ID, selfies and photos

As soon as the appeal is complete, TikTok starts deleting what you submitted, including selfies, ID photos and the email address you gave for the result, though some jurisdictions may require it to keep appeal information for legal reasons. If you win, it keeps a record of your date of birth and details of the ID check, but not a copy of the ID. Your date of birth isn't visible to anyone else, and your photos never appear on your profile. For a feature appeal, TikTok keeps a tracking record of the appeal for 90 days.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

For parents: teens must be at least 13 to have an account, and at least 16 to send or receive direct messages and to let others download, Stitch and Duet their videos. That's why TikTok stresses a real date of birth from the start, so get it right when you set up a TikTok account. In the EEA, U.K. and Switzerland, a photo you appear in becomes your personal data, and you can object, ask for access, or ask for it to be deleted or corrected. The general sign-up rules are in my guide to how old you have to be for TikTok, and for ongoing supervision, my Family Pairing guide is the next read.

My verdict on TikTok age checks

Read the notification carefully and work out whether you've lost a feature or the whole account, because the clocks aren't the same. If it's a ban, request your data that day, especially in the U.S. where you've only got 23 days. Pick the method you can finish in one go, have your ID or your parent ready before you start, and don't guess at anything. A clean, correct appeal beats a rushed one.
