How to Change Your Age on TikTok (and What TikTok Allows)

You can't type a new birthday into TikTok's settings. The only route TikTok documents is the minimum age appeal: open the notification about the locked feature, tap Appeal and confirm your age. If it's approved, TikTok updates your date of birth, and you have 180 days from losing access to appeal.

I get asked this one a lot, usually by someone who rushed through sign-up years ago, tapped the wrong year and now finds LIVE or messages locked. It's frustrating, and the internet is full of tricks that don't exist. So I've gone through TikTok's own Help Center to set out what you can and can't do with the age on your account.

If you run a small business account or you're building a following as a creator, an age error matters even more, because features like LIVE are tied to it. Here's the honest picture.

Can you change your age on TikTok yourself?

Short answer: TikTok's Help Center doesn't describe any settings screen where you type in a new birthday. There's no edit field for date of birth in the profile editor, and TikTok's help pages don't mention one.

What TikTok does describe is an appeal. When its systems think an account holder is younger than the minimum age for a feature, it removes access to that feature and gives you a way to prove your age. TikTok's article on minimum age appeals says that if your appeal is approved, it updates the date of birth on your account. That's the documented route to a corrected age.

TikTok's terms also say you need to give accurate details, including your date of birth, when you create an account, and keep them up to date. So the platform does expect the date to be right; it simply controls how it gets changed.

Why TikTok locks features when it thinks your age is wrong

TikTok's minimum age is 13, although its Help Center notes other ages can apply under its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. On top of that, certain features have their own age gates. According to the minimum age appeals article:

  • Going LIVE is for people aged 18 and older.
  • Sending and receiving direct messages is for people aged 16 and older.
  • Some other features in the app carry their own age rules too.

If TikTok believes you don't meet the age for one of these, it removes your access. You can still log in and use the rest of the app, but the restricted features stay off unless an appeal succeeds.

How to appeal to correct your age on TikTok

According to the Help Center, you'll see a notification the next time you open the app after access is removed. The appeal starts there:

  1. Open TikTok and find the notification about the feature you've lost.
  2. Tap Appeal.
  3. Follow the instructions on screen and choose one of the age check options offered to you.
  4. Wait for TikTok to tell you the result.

Timing matters. The Help Center says you have 180 days from the date your access was removed to send an appeal. If you leave it longer than that, the option may no longer be there.

The age check options TikTok offers

Which methods you see depends on your age and where you live. TikTok's appeals article lists these:

MethodWho it's for (per TikTok's Help Center)
A selfie holding your government ID plus a code TikTok sendsPeople aged 16 and over
Confirmation from a parent or guardian through an emailed linkTeens aged 16 to 17
A photo of you with a parent, guardian or trusted adult over 25Teens aged 16 to 17, in certain countries only
Card authorisation in your own nameAdults aged 18 and over

TikTok says you can cover the parts of your ID the law lets you cover, and that the selfies and ID photos you send are deleted once the process ends. Never send these photos to anyone outside the official in-app flow.

What happens to your TikTok age after the appeal

This is the part people don't expect. TikTok's article says that if the appeal is approved, it updates your date of birth. If the appeal isn't approved, TikTok may still update your date of birth, depending on the information you submitted. In other words, the appeal can move the date either way, so only appeal with details that are true.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

If your appeal isn't approved and you don't try again, you won't be able to use the restricted features. That's frustrating for a creator who wants to go LIVE, but it's the rule TikTok sets out.

Who sees the age on your TikTok account

Good news for privacy: TikTok's Help Center says your date of birth is never visible to other users. Nobody browsing your profile can see it, and changing it won't announce anything to your followers.

If you're helping a teenager set up an account, it's worth knowing that the protections tied to their age are there on purpose. I'd rather see a young person grow into features than get them early, and my guide on blocking someone on TikTok and what they see covers another safety tool every family should know.

When the TikTok age appeal isn't showing for you

Not everyone with a wrong birthday sees an appeal notification. If you've never had a feature removed, there may be nothing to appeal. In that case, the sensible step is to contact TikTok through its own Help Center rather than any outside site:

  1. Tap Profile at the bottom of the app.
  2. Tap the Menu button at the top, then Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Help Center. You may need to scroll down.
  4. Tap Chat with us and follow the steps to explain the problem.

Be clear and polite, give the correct date of birth and explain how the mistake happened. TikTok decides what it can do, and there's no guarantee it will change the date outside the appeal route.

Changing your age on TikTok: what to avoid

  • Don't trust videos or sites that promise a hidden setting for editing your birthday. TikTok's own help pages don't mention one.
  • Don't send ID photos or codes to accounts that message you offering help. Only TikTok's in-app flow should ask for them.
  • Don't make a new account with a different birthday to get around an age gate. It breaks TikTok's terms and puts your main account at risk.

Starting fresh can also bring its own limits. If you've ever wondered why a brand new profile struggles to follow people, my piece on why TikTok won't let you follow people on a new account explains it.
