Register with Cloudflare if you want domains renewed at registry rates with no markup, free DNSSEC and privacy, and you're happy to run your DNS on Cloudflare, because its registrar requires Cloudflare nameservers. Register with GoDaddy if you want one company for the domain, a website builder and 24/7 human support, and you don't mind introductory first-year offers that renew at a higher rate.
I read Cloudflare Registrar's product page, its documentation and FAQ, and GoDaddy's domain pages. Both will register your name. The real decision is whether you want a lean registrar or a one-stop shop, and that rule about nameservers is the part people miss.

What Cloudflare does differently
Cloudflare's promise is simple: registration, transfer and renewal fees are always at or below what the registry and ICANN charge it, with no surprise fees. Domains auto-renew by default at the registry's list rate, they're locked against unauthorised transfers until you choose otherwise, and every domain gets free DNS, CDN, SSL and one-click DNSSEC.
The catch sits in the FAQ. Every domain on Cloudflare Registrar has to use Cloudflare nameservers. You can delegate a subdomain elsewhere, and Business or Enterprise customers can use custom-branded nameservers, but if you need a different DNS provider for the whole domain, you'll have to move the domain away. There are also no refunds: Cloudflare passes the registry fees straight on, so a typo registration stays yours.
What GoDaddy bundles in
GoDaddy calls itself the world's largest domain registrar, with more than 82 million domains under management for over 20 million customers and over 500 domain endings to choose from. With a domain it includes WHOIS privacy, email impersonation protection, a registrar transfer lock, automated DNS and round-the-clock human support, plus growth tools such as an AI logo maker and a website builder trial.
Read the offer terms closely. Many of the extensions on GoDaddy's domain page show an introductory first-year rate, some with a multi-year purchase required, and a higher rate for the years after. That isn't hidden, but it's easy to skim past.
If the name you want is taken, our guide to finding out who owns a domain shows how to find the owner, even when the record is hidden.
Five checks before you register
- Decide where your DNS will live. If it's anywhere other than Cloudflare, Cloudflare Registrar isn't an option for that domain.
- Compare renewal terms, not first-year offers, for the ending you want.
- Check privacy and transfer lock are on by default; both companies say they are.
- Think about support. If you'd rather phone a person, GoDaddy offers 24/7 human support.
- Moving a domain? ICANN blocks transfers within 60 days of a registration or contact change, so plan ahead.

My advice on Cloudflare or GoDaddy
For most small businesses that already use Cloudflare or are happy to, I'd register there: renewals at registry rates, privacy and DNSSEC included, and nothing pushed at you. If you want your domain, website builder and a phone line to a human in one account, GoDaddy is the easier fit, as long as you note the renewal rate before you buy. Whichever you choose, keep the transfer lock on and the auto-renew switched on so the name you've built a brand on never lapses.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
