BigQuery suits teams on Google Cloud that want a serverless warehouse with nothing to provision and a free tier of 10 GiB storage plus up to 1 TiB of queries a month. Snowflake suits teams that want a fully managed data cloud across more than one cloud provider, with editions from Standard up to Business Critical and Virtual Private Snowflake for regulated industries. Both charge for what you use, so the real decision is your cloud and your governance needs.
Data warehouses are a big commitment, because your dashboards, pipelines and AI projects end up built on top. I read Google's BigQuery product, plans and sandbox pages and Snowflake's home and plans pages to set out the differences that matter before a proof of concept.
BigQuery and Snowflake compared
| BigQuery | Snowflake | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | Serverless, compute allocated automatically | Fully managed, consumption-based |
| Where it runs | Google Cloud | Across cloud providers |
| Free route | Free tier plus a sandbox with no card | Start for free |
| Compute options | On-demand per data scanned, or capacity in slots | Editions on a consumption model |
| Editions | Standard, Enterprise, Enterprise Plus | Standard, Enterprise, Business Critical, Virtual Private Snowflake |
| AI | Gemini in BigQuery | Snowflake CoWork and CoCo |
| Time travel | Not covered on the pages I read | Time Travel, extended on Enterprise |
Try BigQuery without a credit card
Google's docs describe the BigQuery sandbox, which lets you explore limited BigQuery features at no charge without providing a credit card or creating a billing account, using Google's public datasets. Separately, the BigQuery free tier gives every customer 10 GiB of storage and up to 1 TiB of query processing a month, and loading and exporting data are free. That makes BigQuery one of the easiest warehouses to try with real queries before anyone signs anything.
How BigQuery charges for compute
Google explains two compute models. On-demand charges by the bytes each query processes, with the first 1 TiB each month free and access to up to 2,000 concurrent slots shared across a project. Capacity charges for slots, which Google describes as virtual CPUs, measured over time, through the Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus editions, with an autoscaler or commitments. You don't provision instances or virtual machines either way, since BigQuery allocates computing resources as you need them.
How Snowflake is organised
Snowflake describes a consumption-based model with four editions. Standard is the entry-level option with Snowpark, data sharing and Time Travel. Enterprise is the most popular and adds extended Time Travel windows plus governance and privacy controls. Business Critical is for regulated industries, adding Tri-Secret Secure, private connectivity and failover for disaster recovery, and Virtual Private Snowflake includes everything in Business Critical in a separate environment. Snowflake takes care of the infrastructure as a fully managed service.
Both vendors are pushing AI into the warehouse. Google says Gemini in BigQuery is included in its editions, alongside serverless Spark and BigQuery DataFrames for Python users, while Snowflake's home page promotes Snowflake CoWork for building enterprise agents and Snowflake CoCo. Treat these as a bonus rather than the reason to choose, because the storage and compute model is what you'll live with for years.
Questions for your proof of concept
- Which cloud does the rest of your stack already run on?
- Do regulators expect private connectivity or a separate environment?
- Are your queries spiky or steady through the day?
- Who will watch usage and set limits?
- Which BI and AI tools must connect on day one?
Once the data's in place, these data analytics tools and this guide to data analytics reporting for small businesses help turn it into decisions.
My advice on BigQuery or Snowflake
If you're already on Google Cloud, start with BigQuery: the sandbox and free tier let you test real workloads for nothing, and there's no infrastructure to manage. If you work across more than one cloud provider or you're in a regulated industry that needs private connectivity or a separate environment, Snowflake's editions are built for that. Run your three heaviest real queries on both during the trial and compare the usage reports, not just the speed.

Frequently asked questions
Is BigQuery free?
BigQuery has a free tier of 10 GiB storage and up to 1 TiB of queries a month, and a sandbox you can use without a credit card.
Does Snowflake have a free trial?
Snowflake's site invites you to start for free. Check the sign-up page for the current trial terms.
What are BigQuery slots?
Google describes slots as virtual CPUs used to run queries. Capacity plans charge for slots used over time.
Which Snowflake edition is for regulated industries?
Snowflake says Business Critical offers functionality for highly regulated industries, including Tri-Secret Secure and private connectivity.
Do I need to manage servers with BigQuery?
No. Google says BigQuery is serverless, so you don't provision instances or virtual machines.
