Small Business Ideas That Pay: What I'd Start Today If I Were Beginning Again

The short version: The best small business ideas in 2024 combine low startup costs with recurring revenue and a skill you already have. Service businesses still beat product businesses for speed to first pound, and the gap between "idea" and "paying client" can be as short as one week if you pick the right one.

Why most "small business ideas" lists are completely useless

I typed "small business ideas" into Google last week. Every single top result gave me a list of 50 to 100 ideas with zero context. Sell crafts on Etsy. Start a podcast. Open a food truck. Thanks for that.

What none of them told me was which ones pay fast, which ones require capital you probably don't have, and which ones are saturated to the point where you'd be building someone else's market for them.

I've been in business for myself since 2006. I've had six-figure years and I've had years where I was eating into savings I didn't really have. I know what it feels like to need an income stream to work quickly, not eventually. So here is what I'd start today, with context that matters.

The framework I use before committing to any idea

Before I list anything, here is the three-question test I run on every business idea:

  • Can I get a paying client or customer within 30 days without spending money I don't have?
  • Does the revenue model allow for repeat business, or am I starting from zero every single month?
  • Is there a clear person with a clear problem who will pay to have that problem solved?

If the answer to all three is yes, it's worth pursuing. If two are yes, it's worth examining. If one or fewer, I walk away no matter how exciting it sounds.

Service business ideas you can start this week

Bookkeeping for small businesses

This is the one I recommend most often to people who ask me where to start. The UK has over 5.5 million small businesses and most sole traders are terrified of their finances. Bookkeepers charge anywhere from 150 to 400 pounds per month per client depending on complexity. Ten clients is a real, liveable income.

You do not need to be a chartered accountant. ICB (Institute of Certified Bookkeepers) offers a Level 2 certificate you can complete in a few months. QuickBooks and Xero both offer free training and certification. I have personally referred people with zero bookkeeping background who were billing clients within four months of deciding to do this.

Social media management for local businesses

Not for influencers. Not for big brands. For the local estate agent, the independent restaurant, the physiotherapy clinic that has zero time and is posting sporadically on Instagram because the owner's teenage daughter set it up in 2019.

Rates sit around 300 to 800 pounds per month per client for content creation and scheduling. That is not glamorous money individually, but four clients at 500 pounds each is 2,000 pounds a month. You can land those clients by cold-calling local businesses, walking in with a printed audit of what they're missing, and offering to fix it.

I did a version of this in my early business years. Walking in beats emailing by a mile.

AI prompt consulting and training

This is the one I'm seeing explode right now and it's the closest thing to a genuine open door I've witnessed since early social media. Businesses want to use ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools but they don't know how. They're scared they'll do it wrong or waste time.

You can charge 500 to 1,500 pounds for a half-day workshop teaching a small team how to use AI tools for their specific workflows. I have done versions of this. The questions I get from business owners are still very basic, which means the market is enormous and under-served.

You don't need a computer science degree. You need to use the tools daily, understand what they're good at, and be able to explain it plainly to someone who isn't technical.

Copywriting and content writing

I know, everyone says this. But here is what no one says: niche it immediately. Don't be a "content writer." Be the writer who specialises in SaaS onboarding emails, or care home website copy, or legal services content. Specialised copywriters charge 150 to 500 pounds per day. Generalists compete on price and lose.

Platforms like Copify or Verblio will pay much less but are useful for building a portfolio in week one. Once you have three to five solid samples in your niche, you go direct to businesses.

Product business ideas worth considering

Digital products and templates

One-time effort, recurring passive income. I'm talking about Canva templates on Etsy, Notion dashboards, email sequence templates, spreadsheet trackers. Top Etsy sellers in the digital downloads category report five to twenty thousand pounds a year from a well-built template shop.

The caveat: this takes three to six months to build momentum. It is not fast money. It is good money later. Do it alongside something that pays sooner.

Print-on-demand products

Printful and Printify both integrate with Etsy and Shopify. You design, they print and ship, you take the margin. No inventory, no upfront stock costs. Margins are thin, around 20 to 40 percent, but a well-positioned niche shop (I once saw someone clean up with custom gifts for dog agility competitors, of all things) can make three to five thousand pounds a month once it finds its audience.

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

The work is in the niche research and the designs. Not in the production.

The ideas I would NOT start in 2024

Dropshipping general products from AliExpress. The margins have been squeezed to near nothing and delivery times from China are still a customer service nightmare post-pandemic.

General virtual assistant work without a specialty. The market is flooded. Pick a niche: executive assistants, podcast production assistants, launch-day assistants. Then you're sellable.

Blogging as a primary income from day one. It works. I know because this is my business. But it takes one to three years to build traffic organically and the ad revenue alone won't pay your bills for most of that time. Do it as a long game alongside something else.

The thing no list ever tells you

The best small business idea is the one you will do. Not the most profitable one in theory. Not the trendiest one on TikTok.

I have watched clever people pick brilliant ideas and then stall completely because the day-to-day of running that business made them miserable. And I have watched people build very ordinary-sounding businesses, bookkeeping, cleaning companies, VA work, into six-figure operations because they showed up for them consistently.

Consistency beats brilliance every single time when you're starting small.

Pick something that passes the three-question test, that you can see yourself doing on a rainy Tuesday when you'd rather not, and that solves a real, specific problem for a real, specific person. Then start before you're ready. Because you will never be fully ready and waiting for that moment is just expensive procrastination dressed up as prudence.

I'm rebuilding parts of my own business right now, publicly, on this blog. The principles I'm applying are the exact ones above. No magic, no shortcuts. Just choosing the right idea and doing the unglamorous work of landing the first few clients.

That's the whole secret, honestly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest small business to start with no money?

Service businesses are the easiest to start with no money because you're selling time and skill you already have. Bookkeeping, copywriting, social media management, and AI training consultancy all require zero startup capital beyond a laptop you likely already own. You can have a paying client within two to four weeks by reaching out directly to local businesses or posting in relevant LinkedIn or Facebook groups.

What small business makes the most money in the UK?

Specialist B2B services consistently outperform other small business categories for profit margins. Management consultancy, specialist copywriting, bookkeeping, and digital marketing consultancy all carry margins above 60 percent. A solo bookkeeper with ten regular clients can net 30,000 to 40,000 pounds per year. A specialist consultant billing 500 to 800 pounds per day for 100 days a year clears six figures.

How do I choose which small business idea to pursue?

Ask three questions: Can I get a paying client within 30 days without significant upfront spend? Does the model allow for repeat or recurring income? Is there a specific person with a specific problem who will pay to have it solved? If yes to all three, pursue it. Then pick the idea you will do consistently on difficult days, not just the one that sounds best on paper.

Is it worth starting a small business in 2024?

Yes, particularly service businesses with low overhead and clear demand. The growth of AI tools has created a new category of consulting work that barely existed two years ago. Remote working norms mean UK-based service providers can now work with US and international clients at competitive rates. The barrier to entry has never been lower for knowledge-based small businesses.
