Free Business Plan Template (2026): Where to Get One and Which Type to Use

The short version: the most useful free business plan templates in 2026 come from the US Small Business Administration, SCORE, and in the UK, the British Business Bank, with Microsoft Create, Google Docs and Canva for something more designed. Pick the type before the template: the SBA says a lean startup plan can take as little as one hour and is typically one page, while a traditional plan can run to dozens of pages.

I've watched a lot of good business ideas stall at the business plan stage. Not because the plan was hard, but because the template was wrong for the job. A forty-section document is the wrong tool if you just need to think clearly, and a one-pager is the wrong tool if a bank wants detail. Here's where to get a free template and how to choose.

Business plan templates from SBA, SCORE and the British Business Bank

In no particular order:

  • SBA: best for US founders who want guidance on both traditional and lean plans, with examples.
  • SCORE: best for a startup template backed by free, confidential mentoring.
  • British Business Bank: best for UK founders, with a business plan template and a cash flow forecast template on its Start Up Loans site.
  • Microsoft Create: best for a designed Word or PowerPoint version.
  • Google Docs template gallery: best for writing and sharing a plan with a co-founder.
  • Canva: best for a plan that doubles as a visual pitch.

Traditional or lean: choose before you download

The SBA says there's no right or wrong way to write a business plan, and that most fall into two types. A traditional plan uses a standard structure and asks you to go into detail in each section. It takes more work upfront, can be dozens of pages long, and is the type banks and backers commonly request. A lean startup plan summarises only the most important points, and the SBA says it can take as little as one hour to make and is typically one page.

So the question is who the plan is for. If it's for you, start lean. If it's for a bank or a backer, start traditional, and expect to spend real time on it. I'd always do the lean version first anyway. It shows you the gaps before you've written thirty pages around them.

Why a plan without a cash flow forecast is half a plan

A business plan template without numbers is half a plan. The British Business Bank gets this right by putting its business plan template next to a cash flow forecast template, and the forecast is usually the part that tells you whether the idea works. In the US, SCORE pairs its template with free, confidential mentoring, so you can have someone experienced check your assumptions. Using either of those extras will improve your plan more than a prettier template will.

Filling in your template without stalling

  1. Write a one-page lean version first: problem, customer, offer, how you'll reach people, and what success looks like.
  2. Decide if you need a traditional plan, and only then download the longer template.
  3. Fill in the customer and market sections before the company description.
  4. Build the cash flow forecast alongside the plan, not after it.
  5. Ask a mentor or a trusted founder to read it and tell you what's missing.
  6. Update it every quarter, so it stays a working document.

What to put in a one-page plan

If you start lean, these are the boxes I'd fill before anything else. Keep each to a few lines:

  • The problem: what your customer is struggling with, in their words.
  • The customer: who has the problem most, and where you'll find them.
  • The offer: what you'll do about it and why it's different.
  • Channels: how people will hear about you in the first few months.
  • Key activities and partners: what has to happen, and who you need to make it happen.
  • Measures: the two or three numbers that will tell you it's working.

Once those boxes are honest, the longer template is mostly expanding what you already know. If they're vague, no amount of formatting will fix it.

Writing help and planning guides

If you're starting from a blank page, my guide on how to write a great business plan covers the thinking behind each section, and I've explained the difference between a business plan and a marketing plan, which trips up a lot of founders. If you want help drafting, here's my take on using a business plan writer.
