The short version: use a proper screen recorder like OBS Studio, Camtasia or Loom, plug in a decent USB microphone rather than relying on your laptop’s built-in one, record system audio and mic audio on separate tracks, and fix your audio levels before you touch the visuals. Get those three things right and the rest is just practice.
I have recorded hundreds of screen demos over the past five years. Client onboarding walkthroughs, product demos for people I never meet, training videos for teams I have never met either. And the thing that kills 90% of them isn’t the screen recording. It’s the audio. Somebody’s fan is whirring, there’s an echo because they recorded in a tiled bathroom-adjacent home office (mine, for a while), or the mic picks up their keyboard clicking louder than their voice.
So let’s do this, in the actual order it needs doing.
Sort your audio before you touch your screen recorder
This is the bit nearly every guide gets backwards. They open with “choose your software” and bury audio three sections down as an afterthought. I do it the other way round because audio is what makes a demo feel professional, and bad audio is what makes people close the tab within 15 seconds. There is research on this that everyone in video quotes and it holds up in my own experience too: viewers forgive rough visuals far more readily than they forgive bad sound.
Here’s what I use, and what it costs:
- A Shure MV7 or Blue Yeti USB mic, both sit around $130 to $170
- A cheap boom arm to get the mic off the desk (desk vibration travels straight into a stand mic)
- A pop filter, which is a £6 bit of nylon mesh that stops your “p” sounds exploding
- Headphones while recording, so you catch problems live instead of finding them in the edit
If you’re recording on a laptop mic because that’s all you have, at minimum record in a room with soft furnishings. Bare walls and hard floors bounce sound and create an echo that screams “amateur” the second someone hits play. Because if a notification pings mid recording, you can mute just that track without touching your voice.
OBS Studio (free)
OBS is what I use for most demos now. It’s free, open source, and built for this. You add a “Display Capture” source for your screen, an “Audio Input Capture” source for your mic, and an “Audio Output Capture” source for system sound. Set each to record to its own track under Settings, then Output, then Audio Track. It has a learning curve of maybe 20 minutes the first time. After that it’s five clicks and you’re recording.
Camtasia (paid, around $179 one-off licence)
Easier interface than OBS, records screen and audio in one go, and its editor is built into the same tool so you’re not exporting and re-importing between apps. Good for people who want fewer moving parts, worse value if you’re already comfortable editing in something separate.
Loom (free tier plus paid plans)
Loom is the quickest for informal demos, especially internal ones or quick client walkthroughs where polish matters less than speed. The step by step I follow
- Close every app and browser tab you don’t need on screen, including anything with notification badges
- Put your phone on silent, in another room if you can
- Do a 10 second test recording, then play it back through headphones to check levels and check for hum or echo
- Record your mic and system audio on separate tracks
- Set resolution to 1080p at 30fps for most demos, only go to 4K if the demo needs fine detail visible (spreadsheet formulas, small UI elements)
- Record in short segments rather than one long unbroken take, three to five minutes at a time, so a mistake doesn’t waste 20 minutes of good footage
- Leave two seconds of silence at the start and end of each segment, it makes stitching in the edit far easier
A 1080p demo at 30fps runs roughly 1 to 2GB per hour of footage, which is manageable for most laptops and won’t choke your upload when you send it to a client. Jump to 4K and you’re looking at 4 to 6GB an hour, which is overkill for most screen content since nobody needs to see your cursor in ultra high definition.
The bit nobody wants to say out loud
Here’s something that will annoy the polish obsessives: a raw, slightly imperfect screen recording where you talk naturally often outperforms a heavily produced one. I have tested both for client onboarding, a scripted, edited, music bedded version and a rougher one where I just talked through the screen as if explaining it to a colleague. The rougher one had a longer average watch time both times I tried it. People can smell a script. They trust a demo more when it sounds like a real person figuring things out live, even with the odd “let me just” or a two second pause while you click somewhere. Don’t over edit the humanity out of it chasing broadcast quality nobody asked for.
That doesn’t mean record sloppily. It means stop treating every “um” as a crisis that needs six takes to fix.
Editing after the fact
Once you’ve got your raw footage with clean separated audio, the edit is mostly trimming dead air, cutting out the bit where you clicked the wrong tab, and adding a title card at the start. A trick worth stealing: add captions even if the audio is perfect. A big chunk of people watch demos with sound off, especially on LinkedIn or in a Slack channel someone forwarded it into. Most editors, including Descript and CapCut, auto generate captions from your audio track now, so it’s a five minute job, not a rebuild.
Don’t just make one video
Once you’ve recorded a demo, with clean separated audio, you’ve created three or four pieces of content, not one. Pull the audio track alone and it’s a podcast style clip. Worth flagging because people conflate these two things and they are not the same job. A product demo is something you script, control and choose to publish. - Talking too fast because you’re nervous about the recording rather than the content
- No pause before clicking, so every click sounds abrupt and jarring on playback
