Perplexity Pro adds 10x as many citations per answer, extended Pro Search and Research, Create files and apps, more file and photo uploads, image generation, limited video generation and a choice of advanced AI models. That's Perplexity's own list as of Nov 2026, and the biggest surprise is that Pro Search has no switch: it kicks in by itself.
I've stuck to what Perplexity's help centre says, because third-party feature lists for Perplexity go stale fast. Here's each feature in plain words, the catches the help pages mention, and who I think should pay for it.
The Pro feature list, in Perplexity's words
- 10x as many citations per answer, which Perplexity frames as more reference depth and transparency.
- Extended access to Pro Search, and to Perplexity Research for deeper digging.
- Access to Create files and apps, which the Pro page calls experimental.
- Increased file and photo uploads.
- Enhanced image generation, plus limited access to video generation tools.
- Advanced models such as GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro in one subscription.
- Pro perks, including early releases and enhanced support.
The plan comparison article adds a detail I'd want before buying: Pro allows up to 50 file uploads per project.
The word "extended" is doing a lot of work in that list. Perplexity describes most Pro limits as weekly or monthly limits for average use rather than fixed counts, so you won't find a hard number for how many Research reports you get. The Free plan is spelled out more clearly: three Pro Searches a day and one Research query a month, as of Nov 2026.
Pro Search with no switch to flip
This is the part people miss. There's no Pro toggle to remember. Perplexity's page says: "There's nothing to turn on: when you use Search, Perplexity applies Pro Search automatically for tasks like multi-step reasoning, detailed research, and complex projects, up to your plan's limit."
That has two consequences. First, you don't need to decide which questions deserve Pro; ask normally and Perplexity decides. Second, your allowance gets spent on whatever Perplexity judges complex, not on what you'd have chosen, and it all comes out of the same plan limit.
Best, Research, and Create files and apps
Pro gives you three ways of working. Here's what each one does in the help centre's terms, and when I'd use it:
| Mode | What Perplexity says it does | When I'd reach for it |
|---|---|---|
| Best | The default. Picks the most suitable model for your query type, and it's available without quota limits | Quick lookups, fact checks, everyday questions |
| Research | Picks the best combination of models for in-depth research and produces a comprehensive report, with no manual model choice | Competitor overviews, market background, a briefing before a pitch |
| Create files and apps | Takes on complex projects with the most advanced tools, from reports and spreadsheets to dashboards and simple web apps | Turning research into a spreadsheet or a one-page dashboard |
The detail worth holding onto: Best mode has no quota. So for the bulk of your daily questions, you aren't using up anything. Save Research for questions that need a report, and remember that Create files and apps comes with a limited number of queries every 30 days on Pro, as of Nov 2026.
Picking a model yourself
If you want control, you can choose the model. As of Nov 2026 the Pro page lists Sonar (Perplexity's in-house model), GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro for detailed answers with lots of sources, and Sonnet 4.6 Thinking and Grok 4 for complex analytical questions that need several search steps. o3-Pro and Claude 4.5 Opus are listed for Max users only. That list changes as new models arrive, so check the page before you plan around a name.
There's a catch in the same section: "For Advanced AI model queries, access may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage." So the model you picked isn't guaranteed in the busiest weeks. The useful habit next to it: you can switch search modes and models in the middle of a session from the search box, which makes it easy to run the same question through a second model and compare.
Files, images and your data
Pro lets you upload PDFs, CSVs, audio, video and images and explore them with models such as GPT-5 and Claude Sonnet 4.6. For a business, that's the useful bit: drop in a competitor's brochure or an export of survey answers and ask questions about it. Pro also includes image and video generation, with video described as limited.
On privacy, the plan comparison article says Pro users can opt out of data collection in their settings, while on Enterprise plans data is never used for model training. If you upload client material, I'd switch that opt-out on first.
A weekly research routine on Pro
- Ask your question in Search as normal and let Pro Search decide how hard to work.
- If the answer feels thin, switch to a different model from the search box and ask again.
- For anything that needs a write-up, such as a competitor round-up, use Research mode and let it pick the models.
- Upload your own file, such as a PDF report or a CSV export, and ask questions about it directly.
- Open the citations and read the sources behind any claim you plan to repeat. More citations means more to check, not proof that the answer is right.
That last step is the habit I'd teach a team first. Ten times the citations only helps if someone clicks them.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
When Pro doesn't show up, and how to leave
If you've paid but your account still looks like Free, Perplexity's checklist is: look for payment issues, check your billing information, make sure you're logged in with the right email, clear your cache and cookies, try resetting the app, then contact support. As a Pro user you can reach support through the Help menu on perplexity.ai or the Pro Discord channel, whose invite link sits in your account menu.
And one you'll be glad to know before you need it: cancel your Pro subscription before deleting your account. On desktop you cancel from your settings page; if you subscribed in the app, use your device's subscription settings.
Free, Pro or Max: who should pick what
Perplexity's own advice is to choose Free if you're a light user or just exploring, Pro if you want advanced AI, frequent research, file analysis or image generation, and Max if you're a power user who does deep research often and wants the most from Create files and apps. Max adds advanced access to all advanced models, enhanced video tools, priority support and early access to new features. My look at Perplexity Max goes deeper on that tier.
I'd use Free for quick lookups, because Best mode and basic searches cover most of them. I'd go Pro when you're running research reports every week, for client work, content planning or competitor checks. I'd skip Max until Pro's limits are stopping work, not just slowing it a little. If you want to try before paying, here's how the Perplexity Pro free trial works, and if you're new to the tool, start with how to use Perplexity.
Features and limits change often, so treat this as accurate as of Nov 2026 and check Perplexity's help centre for the latest. The Pro page was last modified on October 26, 2026 when I checked.
If your team wants research done faster with AI and a clear habit for checking the sources, that's the kind of AI enablement I help with. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
