Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web in real time and returns short answers with numbered citations, so you can check every claim. Free users get core search and chat with a limited number of Pro Searches a day; paid plans give you more Pro Searches, Projects, file uploads and higher limits. It suits anyone who researches for a living. The line to read before you rely on it at work: Perplexity says Pro and Enterprise queries aren't used to train third-party models.
This review is a buyer's guide built from Perplexity's own product, help and Enterprise pages, not a diary of my own searches. I've written about it as a marketer who spends a lot of time on research, so I've focused on what changes your work: how answers are built, what each plan unlocks and what to check before your team uses it with client material.
How a Perplexity answer is built
Perplexity's help centre describes four steps. It interprets your question, searches the web for sources such as articles, websites and journals, summarises the most relevant points into a conversational answer, and adds numbered citations that link to the original sources. Its FAQ says it routes each question across multiple frontier models, so you don't have to pick one yourself.
That citation habit is the reason I'd use it for research over a chat assistant. When an answer quotes a number, you can open the source in one click and see whether it says what the answer claims.
What each way of using it gives you
| Mode or plan | What Perplexity says it does | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Full access to core search and chat, with a limited number of Pro Searches each day | Occasional research and quick fact checks |
| Pro Search | Deeper answers across more sources, with a model picker | Questions that need several sources compared |
| Research | Runs dozens of searches, reads hundreds of sources and returns a report in about 2-4 minutes | Market scans, competitor research, briefing documents |
| Pro plan | Extended Pro Searches, Projects, file uploads and higher limits | Daily research for work |
| Computer | Builds apps, tools and documents and runs multi-step workflows | People who want finished outputs, not just answers |
| Enterprise | SOC 2 Type II, SSO and SCIM, file retention controls, no training on enterprise data | Teams handling client or company information |
Strengths and weak spots
The strengths are clear from its own pages: every answer carries citations, the Research mode does in minutes what used to take an afternoon of tabs, and it's available on the web, iOS and Android apps, its Comet browser and an API. Its Pro page lists models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Moonshot AI and xAI, which means you're not tied to one company's model.
The weak spots are the ones every AI search tool shares. A summary is only as good as the sources it found, and a citation proves where a line came from, not that the source is right. For anything that matters, such as a statistic in a client report, open the cited page and read the sentence yourself.
The privacy point to check before work use
Perplexity's FAQ says Pro and Enterprise queries are not used to train third-party models, and its Enterprise page says it never trains its models on enterprise customers' data. The same lines don't cover the free plan, so if you're pasting in anything confidential, check your account's privacy settings or use a paid workspace. That's a two-minute job that saves an awkward conversation later.
Questions to ask before you pay
- How many deep research tasks will you run in a week? If it's a handful, the free plan may be enough.
- Will you upload files or client documents? That points to a paid plan, and for teams to Enterprise.
- Do you need one shared, controlled workspace? Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM and user management.
- Does your work need checkable sources? If yes, Perplexity's citations are the main reason to choose it.
- Will you use the browser or API? Comet and the API platform extend it beyond the search box.
If the browser side interests you, my explainer on what Perplexity Comet is covers it, and if you want Perplexity to mention your own business in its answers, start with how to get found on AI search.
My verdict on Perplexity
For anyone whose work starts with research, Perplexity earns a place in the toolkit, and the free plan is the right way to judge it. Upgrade when you hit the Pro Search limit, need file uploads or start running Research reports every week. For a team, I'd go straight to the Enterprise conversation, because the training and retention controls matter more than any single feature. Keep the habit that makes it useful: click the citation before you repeat the claim.
