How to Monetise TikTok in Japan: What the Programme Asks

Japan is one of eight countries where TikTok's Creator Rewards Program is open. You need a Personal Account, to be 18, at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, and your qualified views must come from programme countries.

Japan is one of the few places where the answer to 'can I monetise TikTok here?' starts with a clear yes. It's one of the eight countries where TikTok's Creator Rewards Program is open. That doesn't mean everyone is paid, though, so this guide goes through what the programme asks of you, the other programmes open to Japanese creators, and how money gets to a yen account.

Japan is on the Creator Rewards list

TikTok's page for the Creator Rewards Program says it's open to creators in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico and Brazil. You must be based in one of those countries and have an account registered there. A creator in Tokyo, Osaka or Fukuoka is inside that boundary, but someone with a Japanese audience who lives and registers elsewhere is not.

The entry requirements, in plain words

TikTok lists these criteria for the programme:

  • A Personal Account. Business Accounts don't qualify.
  • You're at least 18 years old. Japan's age of majority is also 18, according to Wikipedia, lowered from 20.
  • At least 10,000 followers.
  • At least 100,000 video views in the last 30 days.
  • You hear back within three days of applying.

Then there are rules for the videos themselves. They must be original, longer than 1 minute, and get at least 1,000 views on the For You feed. Duets, Stitches, Photo Mode posts, ads and paid promotions don't count, and TikTok asks for 1080p or higher. A view is qualified only if it's watched for at least five seconds (search views need at least 30 seconds), comes from where the programme is available, isn't fraudulent or paid, and repeat views from one account count once.

That last point matters for Japanese creators with international fans. Views from outside the eight programme countries don't count as qualified views, so a viral clip watched mostly overseas may earn much less than its total suggests. TikTok doesn't publish a yen figure per view, and I won't make one up.

How reward pay is built and when it arrives

TikTok says total rewards equal a Standard Reward plus an Additional Reward. Withdrawal requests are typically processed within 72 hours, and rewards may be taxable, with TikTok unable to give personal tax advice. TikTok also says audience age and local relevance can affect how much a video earns, and its dashboard shows age distribution for each video. In Japan, that's a reason to make videos for a Japanese-speaking audience on purpose.

The yen side: payout currency and PayPal history

The yen (JPY) is Japan's official currency and the Bank of Japan is the exclusive note issuing authority. The old sen and rin subunits were taken out of circulation at the end of 1953, so everyday prices are in whole yen. TikTok's own materials describe payouts in terms that depend on your payment method, and the payout currency depends on that method too, so check which currency your Japanese bank account will see before you set it up.

One historical detail is worth knowing. Wikipedia reports that after new banking regulations took effect in 2010 (in March), PayPal suspended the ability of personal account holders registered in Japan to send or receive money, and those accounts were then charged business fees on all transactions. I'm not saying that describes PayPal today, since I haven't confirmed the current rules. I'm saying that if TikTok offers PayPal as a payment option, you should check what type of account Japan requires and what it costs.

Other income inside TikTok for Japanese creators

Creator Rewards isn't the only programme. TikTok lists Subscription, TikTok One brand campaigns, LIVE Gifts and TikTok Shop affiliate earnings among its options, and says TikTok Studio shows what you're eligible for. The seller site's region menu includes Japan, so Shop is another route for creators who want to sell or promote products. Subscribers pay a monthly fee, and the creator receives 70% of revenue after app store fees, with a possible extra 20% bonus, up to 90%, for creators with more than 10k followers and 100k views.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

Because Japan has several of these routes open at once, the best plan is usually to stack them. A creator might qualify for Rewards, take brand campaigns, and test Shop affiliate links in the same account. Compare that with Ireland, where Shop is open but Rewards aren't, to see why Japan is the stronger case.

Where to go next

If the numbers are your question, my page on TikTok pay per 1,000 views in Germany explains how a country on the same list can still pay very differently from video to video. The practical advice is the same wherever you live: build one clear audience, make longer original videos, and judge your own results in the dashboard, not a stranger's screenshot.
