Most stores reach for a page builder when the theme editor stops doing what they want: a campaign landing page, a long product page or a sales funnel. The split in the list below is simple. Some lead with drag and drop, funnels and testing, while others lead with AI, where you describe the page and it drafts one for you.

How far Shopify themes go before a builder

The Shopify Help Center page on theme structure says you can have up to 25 sections for each template, and each template can contain up to 1,250 blocks across all sections. For a lot of stores, that's plenty of room to build a landing page from the theme you already have.

So try the theme editor first. If you can build the page with sections and blocks, you've saved yourself another app to manage. A builder earns its place when you need layouts your theme can't produce, built-in testing, or lots of campaign pages made quickly. Every builder here shows a free plan

The Shopify App Store showed 10,000 apps for 'page builder' as of Oct 2026, and 4 of the top results were labelled Ad. All ten here show Free or Free plan available, and none has fewer than 100 reviews: counts run from 106 to 5,918.

That means the free label won't separate them. What will is what each free plan lets you publish, and that sits on the app's own listing page, not in the search results. Open the plan details for your top two before you build anything you'd hate to lose.

Drag and drop or AI first

A drag and drop builder gives you blocks to place by hand. An AI builder drafts the page from a prompt, then you edit it. Several of the ten do both, so read the tagline: some lead with AI in the name and the first line, others lead with funnels, sections or testing.

If you like control over every pixel, start with drag and drop. If you'd rather edit a draft than face a blank page, an AI builder gets you there faster.

Things to check before a builder page goes live

1. Preview the page on a phone and a laptop before it goes live.
2. Check the page still loads quickly once you've added video, sliders and big images.
3. Make sure your product reviews, upsells and other apps still show on the new page.
4. Write a page title and description for search, as you would for any other page.
5. Keep a list of the pages the builder made, so you know what to check if you ever uninstall it.

My plain advice before you add a page builder

Build the page in your theme first. If you hit a wall, pick the builder whose tagline matches the job, whether that's funnels, testing, blog layouts or AI drafts, and start on its free plan. Build one page, check it on a phone, and only move more of the store over once you're happy with how it performs.
