Yes, ChatGPT is free to use. OpenAI's Free plan gives you unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse safeguards, plus web search, file and image uploads, data analysis and image creation, but those tools have their own usage limits and reset on a timer.
So the honest answer is that the chat is free and the extras are rationed. OpenAI's help page also says the default model and the limits can change over time, which is why the free experience you had last month may not match what you get today. Here's what's in the box, where the caps sit, and the two catches people tend to miss.
What the free plan includes
OpenAI's Free Tier FAQ lists these features for free users:
- Searching the web for up-to-date information.
- Analysing and pulling insights from your data.
- Uploading images or files in your prompts.
- Finding and using GPTs other people have built.
- Creating images in ChatGPT.
- A Library with 500 MB of storage for your files.
The help page adds that a reasoning option called Think is available in the mobile app and rolling out on the web. On mobile you open the + menu and pick Think when a question needs more working out.
Where the limits are
The text chat itself isn't capped for normal use. OpenAI says free users have unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. The tools are a different story. These can have usage limits separate from the main chat:
| Feature | Free plan | What happens at the limit |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday text chat | Unlimited, within abuse safeguards | Not normally capped |
| File and image uploads | Limited | You wait until it resets |
| Image creation | Limited | You wait until it resets |
| Data analysis | Limited | You wait until it resets |
| Voice chats, deep research, memory | Limited, per the pricing page | Reduced access until reset |
| Creating a new GPT | Not available | Use existing GPTs instead |
ChatGPT tells you when you hit a limit and shows the reset timing in the app. To see what each paid step adds over Free, my breakdown of ChatGPT Go versus Plus lays it out.
Two catches most people miss
You can't build your own GPT on a personal account
This one surprises people. OpenAI's FAQ says new GPT creation and publishing aren't available on personal ChatGPT accounts, and it names Free, Go, Plus and Pro. You can keep using existing GPTs, but making new ones is limited to Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces where settings allow it. So upgrading to Plus won't get you a custom GPT builder.
Ads can appear on the free plan
OpenAI's help page states that ads may appear in the Free tier in certain countries, and the pricing page notes that the Go plan may include ads too. If you're using ChatGPT for client work, that's worth knowing before you share your screen in a meeting.
DeepSeek is another free option people try, and our DeepSeek vs ChatGPT guide puts the two side by side.
Free versus the paid plans
The pricing page lists Free, Go, Plus and Pro for individuals. Go adds more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory. Plus raises the limits again. There's one practical upside if you upgrade mid-session: OpenAI says that if you hit a rate limit on Free, your usage resets when you move to Plus, Pro or Business.
| If you mostly... | Free is enough? |
|---|---|
| Ask questions, draft emails and summarise text | Yes, the text chat isn't capped for normal use |
| Upload long documents every day | Probably not, uploads are rationed |
| Generate lots of images | No, image creation hits a limit |
| Want to build a custom GPT | No plan for individuals allows it |
| Want no ads | Check whether ads run in your country |

How to use ChatGPT free
- Go to ChatGPT in a browser or download the official app.
- Choose Sign up for free and create your account.
- Start typing. Use the + menu to add a file or image, or to pick Think on mobile.
- When a tool limit appears, keep chatting in text; the tool comes back when its limit resets.
What happens when you reach a limit
OpenAI's help page explains the mechanics. If you reach a rate limit for data analysis, file uploads or image creation, you need to wait until later to use those tools again. GPT usage follows your Free tier model limit too, so when you hit it, access to GPTs pauses until the limit resets, and ChatGPT shows the reset time in the product.
The pricing page also lists a few newer extras on Free, each marked as limited: memory and context, Codex access, and ChatGPT Work access on desktop. They're there to try, not to build a daily workflow on. If one of them becomes central to how you work, that's usually the moment a paid plan earns its place.
| You hit... | What to do |
|---|---|
| An image creation limit | Keep working in text and come back after the reset |
| A GPT usage limit | Wait for the reset shown in the app, or upgrade |
| An upload limit | Paste the text you need instead of attaching the file |
My advice
For most small business owners, free ChatGPT is plenty for writing, planning and brainstorming, because the text chat is where you'll spend your time and it isn't capped for everyday use. Pay only when a specific tool limit gets in your way every week, usually uploads or images. And don't upgrade expecting to build your own GPT: OpenAI's own help page says no personal plan allows it.
