ChatGPT suits people who want a general assistant with a clear free tier: unlimited everyday text chats, web search, file uploads, image creation and 500 MB of Library storage. Meta AI suits people whose work lives on Instagram, Facebook and Threads, because it can cite public posts there and connect to your Instagram professional account and Meta Ads Manager. Pick by where your audience spends its time.
Meta AI is already sitting inside apps most of your customers open daily, which is why so many business owners ask how it compares with ChatGPT. I read Meta's Meta AI page and OpenAI's help article on the ChatGPT Free tier, and the facts below come from those pages.

What Meta AI does for a business
Meta describes Meta AI as a personal assistant that gets things done, now also on Mac in beta. It can cite public posts from Instagram, Facebook and Threads, so answers reflect what people are talking about right now. It can create presentations and docs, build training plans and, once you connect your email and calendar, send daily briefings.
The business side is the interesting part. You can link your Instagram professional account, Meta Ads Manager and Google Workspace so Meta AI can look at your content and ad performance and build presentations from it. It also runs deep research, drafting structured reports with citations, and suggests local places with ratings and photos.
What ChatGPT gives you for free
OpenAI's help centre says plainly that ChatGPT is free to use. Free users get the GPT-5.6 Luna model, unlimited everyday text chats within abuse safeguards, web search, data analysis, image and file uploads, image creation and a Library with 500 MB of storage. Think mode is in the mobile app and rolling out on the web.
File uploads, image creation, voice and data analysis each have their own limits, and ChatGPT tells you when you hit one. Plus raises those limits.
Two lines in OpenAI's FAQ worth knowing
Here's what surprised me. OpenAI says ads may appear in the Free tier in certain countries. And new GPT creation and publishing aren't available on any personal account, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro. You can still use existing GPTs, but building new ones now needs a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace.
Meta AI's pages, on the other hand, don't name a free plan at all. The WhatsApp Plus page mentions a Meta One bundle with more AI usage across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Meta AI, so that's where Meta points people who want more AI usage.
Which business each one suits
Meta AI suits shops, salons, cafes and creators who sell through Instagram and Facebook and want help reading their own content and ad results. ChatGPT suits anyone who needs a broad assistant for writing, analysis and research across any topic. If you're already a heavy user, my ChatGPT power user workflow is worth a read, and Meta's assistant also shows up in its glasses, covered in how to use Meta AI glasses.
My advice for small business owners
If most of your customers find you on Instagram or Facebook, connect Meta AI to your professional account and ask it what your best posts have in common. For everything else, from emails to spreadsheets, ChatGPT's free tier covers a lot of ground. Using both is fine: one reads your social world, the other handles the general desk work.
