Lots of brands give you free stuff on your birthday, but only through their free loyalty programs, and only if your birthday is saved in your account ahead of time. Starbucks, Ulta Beauty, Sephora, Chipotle and Krispy Kreme all offer a birthday treat, and each has its own timing rule that decides whether you get it.
Birthday freebie lists online run to dozens of brands, and half the details are out of date. I've kept this to programs whose own terms or announcements I could read, because the rules matter more than the list: miss one and the reward simply doesn't appear.
Birthday freebies at a glance
| Brand | What you get | The rule that matters |
|---|---|---|
| Starbucks Rewards | A drink, food item or bottled drink | Birthday must be in your account; Green members redeem on the day, Gold get 7 days, Reserve 30 days |
| Ulta Beauty Rewards | A birthday gift | Birthday in your profile and marketing opt-in before your birthday month; online needs a qualifying purchase |
| Sephora Beauty Insider | A birthday gift, or 250 points | Free in store; online needs a 25 dollar minimum purchase |
| Chipotle Rewards | Guac, queso, chips or a fountain drink | Pick within a 30-day window; 13 or older |
| Krispy Kreme Rewards | A birthday gift | Join the rewards program |
The catch: set it up before your birthday
This is the reason people miss out. These rewards don't arrive because it's your birthday, they arrive because your account says it's your birthday. Starbucks says that if you don't provide your birthday, you won't receive the reward. Ulta goes further: your birth date has to be in your profile, and you must be opted in to marketing messages, before your birthday month begins. Sign up a week before and you may already be too late for this birthday.
Starbucks Rewards
Starbucks' terms say Green level members get one free handcrafted drink, one food item or one ready-to-drink bottled drink on their birthday, at participating stores, excluding multi-serve items. The timing depends on your level: Green members redeem on the birthday itself, Gold members have 7 days from the birthday, and Reserve members 30 days. If you're Green and busy on the day, plan your coffee run.
Ulta Beauty
Ulta gives members a birthday gift each year while supplies last. Online, you add the gift to your bag while logged in and it applies as free with a qualifying purchase, with normal shipping. In store, you need the code from the Ulta app or your birthday email. The two conditions to meet in advance are a birth date in your profile and being opted in to marketing communications.
Sephora Beauty Insider
Sephora's free Beauty Insider program, which it says has more than 45 million members in North America, offers a birthday gift you can redeem free at Sephora and Sephora at Kohl's stores, or online with a 25 dollar minimum purchase. If you'd rather not have the product, you can take 250 Beauty Insider points instead, in store and at Kohl's.
Chipotle Rewards
Chipotle relaunched its rewards program and now lets members pick a birthday reward with a 30-day redemption window: guac, queso, chips or a fountain drink. Chipotle Rewards is open to residents of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. aged 13 or older, and to some Canadian residents, excluding Quebec.
Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme Rewards members get a birthday gift too. As with the others, join the program and add your birthday well ahead.
Watch the email you sign up with
Several of these programs deliver the birthday reward or the code by email, and Ulta needs you opted in to marketing messages to qualify. If you sign up with an inbox you never check, the reward can sit unused until it expires. I'd use one email for loyalty programs, check it in your birthday week, and filter the rest of the year's promotions into a folder so they don't clutter your main inbox.
And keep the apps updated. In-store redemptions usually need you to show a code or your member barcode, and an app that won't load at the till is a common way to lose a reward.

How to get the most birthday freebies
- A month before your birthday, join the free rewards programs you'd use anyway.
- Add your birthday to each profile and double-check it's right.
- Opt in to marketing emails where a program requires it, then unsubscribe later if you want.
- Note each redemption window in your calendar: some are one day, some a week, some a month.
- Bring the app or code with you; in-store redemptions usually need it.
Free birthday food without the spend
Not every birthday reward needs a purchase. Starbucks and Chipotle give the item itself, and Sephora's in-store gift is free. Ulta and Sephora online tie the gift to a purchase, so if you're watching your spending, redeem in store instead.
My verdict
Birthday freebies are real, but they reward people who plan. Pick three or four programs you'd use, add your birthday a month early, and diarise the redemption windows. If you like getting things free, how to get free products to review and the online survey sites worth your time are good next reads.
