The Instagram following limit is 7,500 accounts. Instagram says it doesn't allow anyone to follow more than 7,500 people, to help reduce spam, and anyone who tries will see an error message, however many followers they have. To follow someone new, you have to unfollow someone first.
Two details surprise people. First, it doesn't matter how big your account is: a profile with millions of followers hits the same cap. Second, you'll sometimes see accounts following more than 7,500 people. Instagram says they did so before the limit was introduced.
Here's what the cap means in practice and how to get back under it without risking your account, based on Instagram's Help Center, read in October 2026.
The Instagram following limit in one table
| Question | Instagram's answer |
|---|---|
| How many accounts can I follow? | Up to 7,500 |
| Does my follower count change that? | No, the limit applies regardless of followers |
| Why is there a limit? | To help reduce spam |
| What happens if I try to follow more? | You'll see an error message |
| Why do some accounts follow more than 7,500? | They followed them before the change was made |
Instagram's limit page doesn't give a different number for business, creator or personal accounts, so plan as if the same 7,500 applies to every account you run, including any second or brand account.
Following vs followers: which one is capped?
The cap is on following, the number of accounts you follow. It isn't a cap on followers, the people who follow you. You can have as many followers as you can earn. If you're trying to grow, that's good news, because the limit only stops you following, not being followed.
How to check if you're near the limit
Open your profile and look at the Following number at the top. If it's close to 7,500, you'll want to tidy up before you start following new accounts for a campaign or a collaboration, otherwise you'll keep hitting the error mid-task.
How to unfollow someone on Instagram
- Go to the profile of the person you want to unfollow.
- Tap (or click) Following at the top.
- Tap Unfollow to confirm.
That's Instagram's own method, and Instagram's Help Center gives the same steps for the app and the web. Doing it one account at a time is slow if you need to drop hundreds, but it's the safe way. My guide on how to unfollow everyone on Instagram explains why risky mass-unfollow apps are the wrong shortcut.
What to do when you see the following limit error
- Stop trying to follow. Repeated attempts won't get past the cap.
- Check your Following number on your profile to confirm you're at 7,500.
- Unfollow a batch of accounts you no longer need, one at a time.
- Try the new follow again once you're below the limit.
If you're nowhere near 7,500 and still can't follow anyone, the cap isn't the cause. That points to something else, such as a temporary restriction, and Instagram's limit page doesn't cover it.
Who to unfollow first
- Accounts that no longer post.
- Brands and pages you followed for a single giveaway or offer.
- Accounts you followed for a project that's finished.
- Anyone whose posts you scroll straight past.
This isn't only about the cap. A tidier following list makes your feed more useful, because you see more of the people you care about.
When removing followers or blocking makes more sense
Sometimes the problem isn't who you follow but who follows you. Instagram says that if your account is private, you can remove people from your followers list. You can also block someone. When you block a person, they can't see your photos or videos or find your account in search, and Instagram says they aren't notified that you've blocked them.
Why your following count might drop on its own
If you notice your Following number going down without you touching it, that's a different issue from the limit. My guide on why Instagram is unfollowing people on its own covers the usual causes and what to check first.
A simple routine to stay under the cap
Once a quarter, open your Following list and scroll through it with a cup of tea. Unfollow anything that matches the list above. It takes ten minutes, it keeps you well clear of the limit, and it means the accounts you follow are the ones you learn from or want to support. If you run a brand account, it's also a chance to make sure the accounts you follow reflect the business you want to be seen as.

Is the 7,500 limit a problem for businesses?
Rarely. Most business accounts follow far fewer than 7,500 people. Where it bites is growth tactics built on following lots of accounts in the hope they follow back. Instagram's reason for the cap, reducing spam, tells you how it sees that tactic. You'll get better results from content people want to share than from following thousands of strangers.
And remember who can see your list. If you're curating who you follow for a brand account, my guide on whether people can see who you follow on Instagram is worth a read.
My verdict
The Instagram following limit is 7,500, it's the same for everyone, and it's there to fight spam. If you hit it, unfollow inactive and one-off accounts by hand rather than reaching for a mass-unfollow app. Then treat the cap as a nudge: a business account grows by being worth following, not by following everyone.
