Yes. If your account is public, anyone on Instagram can see who you follow. If it's private, only your approved followers can open your following list, but there's a catch: Instagram says public accounts you follow can still be seen by anyone on Instagram and Threads, even when your own account is private.
Most people assume that switching to private hides their following list completely. Instagram's own comparison table says otherwise, and the difference comes down to whether the accounts you follow are public or private.
The short version, from Instagram's own table
| Question | Public account | Private account |
|---|---|---|
| Who can see the public accounts you follow? | Anyone on Instagram and Threads | Anyone on Instagram and Threads |
| Who can see the private accounts you follow? | Anyone on Instagram | Your followers |
| Who can follow you? | Anyone on Instagram | Only people you approve |
| Who can see your profile photo, name, username and bio? | Anyone on or off Instagram | Anyone on or off Instagram |
Read the first row twice. Following a public account is visible whether your account is public or private. The link shows up on their side, in their followers list, which they or anyone viewing it can scroll.
Why a private account doesn't hide everything
When you make your account private, Instagram says people need to send you a follow request to see your posts, your followers list or your following list. That does stop strangers opening your list from your profile.
But each follow is a connection between two accounts. If you follow a celebrity, a brand or a friend with a public profile, you appear in their followers list. Anyone who opens their list and scrolls, or searches it for your name, can find you there. Your privacy setting controls your profile, not theirs.
What a private account does protect
- Strangers can't open your following list from your profile.
- Private accounts you follow stay visible only to your approved followers.
- Your posts and the people who follow you are limited to approved followers.
Instagram also notes that if you're under 18, your account is private by default, teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to switch to public, and business profiles can't be made private at all. To go private, a business account has to switch back to a personal account first.
How to make your account private
- Open Settings from your profile menu.
- Tap Account privacy below Who can see your content.
- Turn on Private account, then confirm Switch to private.
After that, new followers need your approval. People who already follow you keep following you unless you remove them.
Can someone see who you've followed recently?
There's no official Instagram list that shows the order in which someone followed accounts, so treat any app that claims to reveal it with caution. What people can see is the following list itself, under the rules in the table above.
Can people see what you like, too?
Likes follow a similar logic. Instagram says when you like a photo, it's visible to anyone who can see that post, and your followers may see your username below a photo you've liked. If the post is public, your like is visible to everyone who can see it, even if your own account is private.
Ways to keep your follows lower profile
- Switch to private so your list can't be opened from your profile.
- Remove followers you don't want seeing your list; on a private account they lose access.
- Remember that following public accounts is always visible from their side, so follow with that in mind.
For more steps, I've written a full guide on how to hide your followers and following list on Instagram. And if Instagram is stopping you following people at all, that's usually a limit rather than a privacy setting; here's why Instagram won't let you follow people.
Followers list versus following list
These two lists get mixed up. Your followers list is everyone who follows you; your following list is everyone you follow. Instagram's table treats them the same way: on a private account, approved followers can see both, and public accounts on either list can be seen by anyone on Instagram and Threads. So if a public account follows you, that connection is visible from their side as well, in their following list. Privacy on Instagram is shared between both ends of every follow.

Does Threads change anything?
Instagram's own wording includes Threads for a reason. Public accounts you follow and public accounts that follow you can be seen by anyone on Instagram and Threads. If you use Threads with the same profile, assume your public connections can be seen there too.
What this means for business accounts
If you run Instagram for your business, your following list is part of your shop window. Business profiles can't be private, so assume anyone can see who you follow. That's no bad thing: following your clients, partners and local businesses shows who you work with. Just avoid following accounts you wouldn't want a customer to spot. If you're growing a new account, my guide to whether 1,000 followers is good on Instagram puts those first milestones in context.
My take
Going private hides your list from strangers, and that's worth doing if you want less attention. It doesn't make your follows invisible. Every public account you follow carries your name in its followers list, so the honest rule is: follow as if it could be seen.
Frequently asked questions
Can people see who I follow on Instagram if my account is private?
Not from your profile, unless they're approved followers. But Instagram says public accounts you follow can be seen by anyone on Instagram and Threads, because you appear in their followers list.
Can people see who I follow on a public Instagram account?
Yes. Anyone on Instagram can see who a public account follows.
Can a business account hide who it follows?
No. Instagram says business profiles can't be made private. You'd need to switch back to a personal account first.
Does Instagram show who I followed most recently?
Instagram doesn't offer an official list showing the order someone followed accounts. People can see the following list itself.
Are Instagram accounts private by default for teens?
Yes. Instagram says accounts for people under 18 are private by default, and teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to switch to public.
