An Instagram character counter tells you instantly whether your caption, bio or hashtag list fits within Instagram's limits, which are 2,200 characters for captions, 150 for bios, and 30 hashtags per post. I use one before every post because captions get cut off with a "more" link after about three lines, so the strongest words need to come first. Bios are tighter still, so every character has to earn its place. Checking counts before posting saves rewrites later.
Instagram allows 2,200 characters in a caption, 150 characters in a bio, 30 characters in a username, 30 characters in the name field, up to 30 hashtags per post and 2,200 characters in a comment. Only the first 125 or so characters of a caption show in the feed before the more link, so the opening line does most of the work. Paste or type your text below and the counter updates live against whichever limit you pick, with a warning the moment you go over. Nothing is uploaded and there is no login.
If the hashtags are what push you over, check your hashtag set for duplicates and banned tags and you will usually find five you can drop.
If your bio keeps running over the limit, the AI Instagram bio writer produces five options that already fit inside 150 characters.

Instagram character limits in 2026
These are the limits the counter checks against. Caption: 2,200 characters. Bio: 150 characters. Username: 30 characters, letters, numbers, full stops and underscores only. Name field: 30 characters, and this one is searchable, so a keyword here is worth more than a fancy font. Hashtags: 30 per post, whether they sit in the caption or the first comment. Comments: 2,200 characters. Alt text: 100 characters. Instagram counts emoji as characters, and some emoji made from several code points can count as more than one on older apps, which is why the counter shows both figures when they differ.
Why the first 125 characters matter
In the feed, Instagram cuts a caption after roughly 125 characters and shows a more link. On some screens the cut lands earlier, especially if you use line breaks early. Whatever comes before that cut is the only part most people read, so put the hook, the question or the payoff there and leave the detail for after the fold. The counter shows you exactly which words make it into that first line so you can move the important part forward. A useful habit is to write the first sentence as if it were the whole post: if someone never taps more, would they still get the point? Save any hashtags, credits and calls to follow for the end, where they do no harm to the opening.
Tips for staying under the limits
- Write the caption long, then trim from the middle, not the start. Your opening line is doing the work.
- Line breaks count as characters. Use them, but do not pad with dozens of blank lines.
- Instagram allows 30 hashtags but the counter will still warn you at 30. Most accounts do better with a smaller, more specific set, and there is a full guide on which hashtags to hide on an Instagram post if you want to keep them out of sight.
- Bios are 150 characters, so cut every word that does not tell a stranger who you help and what to do next.
- Mentions of accounts count towards the character total. Tag people in the photo instead if space is tight.
- If you are stuck for the wording itself, our worked examples of engagement captions show how a short opener plus a longer second half reads in practice.

Frequently asked questions
How many characters can an Instagram caption have?
2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji, hashtags and mentions. Only the first 125 or so show in the feed before the more link, so the opening line matters most.
How long can an Instagram bio be?
150 characters. The name field above it is a separate 30-character field and it is searchable, so put a keyword there rather than in the bio if you have to choose.
Do emoji count as one character on Instagram?
Mostly yes, but emoji built from several code points, such as skin tones, flags and family emoji, can count as two or more on some devices. This counter shows the visible character count and, when it differs, the underlying code unit count too.
Do hashtags in the first comment count towards the 30 limit?
Yes. Instagram allows 30 hashtags per post in total across the caption and comments. Any beyond that are usually rejected or the comment fails to post.
