The HubSpot prospecting agent is an AI agent in HubSpot that watches companies for buying signals, finds the right contacts at those companies and writes personalised outreach based on your CRM data. You control it through plays, which are sets of instructions for who to target, what to sell and how to reach out, and you find it under Sales, then Prospecting Agent.
Here's what catches people out. As of October 2026, HubSpot says the agent uses HubSpot Credits when it generates personalised email outreach for each lead, whether the agent recommended the lead or you enrolled it yourself. First-time users can opt in to 14 days of free access, but that clock starts when you publish your first play, and when it ends the agent switches itself off until someone turns credit usage back on. Plan your plays before you press Publish.
What the agent does for a sales team
HubSpot describes three jobs. The agent detects companies that match the buying signals you care about, identifies the relevant contacts at those companies, and writes outreach using CRM data plus fresh signals. Those signals include company news such as receiving funding or launching a new product, and evidence that a company's researching topics you care about.
It looks at recent engagements on contact records going back up to the past year. You can still work leads by hand without it, and you can enrol records from Breeze Assistant or from a workflow action as well as from the agent's own page.
Who can set it up
| Job | What HubSpot's help requires, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Configure the agent and create, edit or delete plays | Prospecting agent admin permissions |
| Enrol contacts and companies | Prospecting agent assignment permissions |
| Set up and use the agent at all | Super Admin or Access prospecting agent permissions |
| Turn on AI | The Give users access to generate AI tools and features switch, in AI settings |
| Pause its credit use | Modify billing and change name on contract permissions |
| Free access eligibility | Starter, Professional or Enterprise with included credits and an assigned seat, and opted in to the Buying Signals and Contact Sourcing beta |
Two more limits from the help pages. Actions that need HubSpot Credits can't be completed in sandbox accounts, so you can't test outreach generation there. And you only get free access once: if your account's used it before, it's not eligible again.
Building your first play
- Go to Sales, then Prospecting Agent, and create a play.
- On the Audience tab, add the company segments to monitor and the contact personas to target, then pick the intent signals to watch.
- Set a daily new contact suggestions limit so the agent doesn't flood your queue.
- On the Context tab, enter your website URL and click Analyze website, or type your selling context by hand, then choose the products and services to sell.
- On the Outreach tab, choose Agent determines steps or Configure sequence steps, and set the maximum emails and minimum days between them.
- Under Guardrails, pick a preset tone or your brand voice, the language, the call to action and the send window.
- On the Automation tab, choose Review emails or Send without review, and who the emails send from.
- Click Test, pick a contact and Generate a sample, then click Review and turn on, then Publish.
The agent follows your maximum emails and minimum wait settings regardless of any custom instructions you give it. Suggestions depend on companies showing signals, so you may see fewer contacts than your daily limit.
Settings worth getting right
The email review choice matters most. With Review emails, you approve each message before it goes out, and the assigned sender gets an in-app notification when a draft's ready. With Send without review, the agent sends on its own based on your settings. I'd start every new play on review.
For sending, you can send from the contact owner, the company owner or a single user, and set a fallback sender in case the owner doesn't have a connected inbox. If you switch on Execute on business days, the agent only schedules emails on business days, and inside your send window it picks the times with the highest open rate.
Editing a play has a catch of its own. Changes only apply to newly enrolled contacts. People already in the play carry on with the version that was live when they joined. You can also set up automatic enrolment when a page is viewed, a form's submitted, a contact's added to a list or a set number of days pass since the last engagement.
The sales workspace around it
The agent sits inside HubSpot's sales workspace, where reps work their day. The prospecting queue and guided execution put tasks, sequence activities and guided actions on one page, so a rep can make calls and send emails one after another. Both need an assigned Sales seat, and editing tasks needs Edit tasks permissions.
Buying groups show the stakeholders at a company as an org chart. You can build one from a template, from scratch, with Breeze Assistant, or auto-build it with AI for companies with fewer than 100 associated contacts. Sales or Service seats can edit buying groups, while Core and View-only seats can only view them.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Target accounts are companies with the Target account property set to True, and only companies with a known company domain name can be chosen. Super Admins can switch on the Companies, Leads and Deals tabs in the workspace settings and exclude specific users or teams. Reps who've completed at least three tasks in the last 17 days get a weekday digest email with that day's meetings.
Should you switch it on?
I'd try the prospecting agent if you already keep your CRM tidy, you've defined segments and personas, and you can spare someone to review drafts for the first few weeks. I'd use the free period to test one narrow play, not five. I'd skip it if your contact data's patchy, because the agent writes from what's in HubSpot, and HubSpot itself says to check AI content for accuracy and tone before it goes out. If you're weighing up the wider product, here's my guide to HubSpot Sales Hub, and for manual follow-ups, here's how HubSpot sequences work.
An agent like this pays off when the team knows what it's for and who checks its work. I run AI training and workshops for teams, and help businesses with AI enablement and workflow automation, so the busywork runs itself and people get time back. Most of that work is with SaaS marketing teams and small businesses. Here's how we can work together.
Frequently asked questions
Does the HubSpot prospecting agent use credits?
Yes. As of October 2026, it uses HubSpot Credits when it generates personalised email outreach for each lead, whether the agent recommended the lead or you enrolled it manually.
How long is the HubSpot prospecting agent free trial?
First-time users can opt in to 14 days of free access. It starts when you publish your first play, and the agent turns off automatically when it ends.
