How to Untag Yourself on Instagram (One Post or Many)

To untag yourself on Instagram, open the post, tap your username, then tap Remove Me From Post on iPhone or Remove Tag on Android and confirm. Instagram says this only works in the phone app, not on a computer, and the post stays up without your name.

Being tagged on Instagram is lovely when it's a friend's wedding photo or a happy customer showing off your product. It's less lovely when it's an unflattering picture, an old work event, or a spammy account tagging dozens of people to get attention. The good news is that you're in charge of your own name, and taking it off a post takes a few taps.

In this guide I'll show you how to remove your tag from one post or many, the difference between untagging and hiding, and the settings that stop unwanted tags turning up in the first place. Every step follows Instagram's help articles on managing photo and video tags.

How to untag yourself on Instagram from a single post

Instagram's help centre says this feature works in the iPhone and Android apps but isn't available on computers, so grab your phone:

  1. Open the post you're tagged in.
  2. Tap your username on the photo or video.
  3. On iPhone, tap Remove Me From Post. On Android, the option is called Remove Tag.
  4. Confirm when Instagram asks.

Your username comes off the post, and it won't sit in the Tagged section of your profile any more. The post itself stays up, because it belongs to whoever shared it.

Removing your Instagram tag from lots of posts at once

If a spam account has tagged you repeatedly, or you're tidying up years of old tags, there's a bulk option:

  1. Tap your profile picture at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right, then Your activity.
  3. Tap Tags, then Select.
  4. Choose the posts you'd like to remove your tag from, then tap Remove at the bottom.
  5. Tap Remove again to confirm.

This is a real time-saver after a giveaway scam has tagged you in a flood of posts. If you're seeing that kind of thing, my guide on spotting Instagram follower scams explains the tricks these accounts use.

Untagging versus hiding a tagged Instagram post

Instagram gives you two different tools here, and it's worth knowing which one you need.

Remove your tagHide from your profile
Your name on the postRemovedStill there
Shows in your Tagged sectionNoHidden from it
Can you undo it?The poster would need to tag you againYes, tap Show On My Profile

To hide a post without untagging, open it, tap Options in the top right, tap Tag Options and choose Hide From My Profile. Instagram's help article is clear that hiding a post from your profile doesn't remove you from the post itself. Hiding suits a post you're happy to be named in but don't want front and centre on your own profile.

Stop unwanted Instagram tags before they happen

Untagging after the fact is fine, but prevention is calmer. Instagram offers two settings, both under Tags and mentions.

Choose who can tag you

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu icon in the top right.
  2. Under How others can interact with you, tap Tags and mentions.
  3. Under Who can tag you, pick an option such as Allow tags from everyone or Don't allow tags.

Instagram says people outside the audience you've chosen will see a message telling them you don't allow tags from everyone. Blocked accounts can't tag you or mention your username at all.

Approve tags before they appear

By default, Instagram adds posts you're tagged in to your profile automatically. If you'd rather check them first, go to Tags and mentions and turn on Manually approve tags. Instagram says you'll still get a notification whenever someone tags you, but the post only appears on your profile once you approve it.

Who can see the Instagram posts you're tagged in

If your account is private, Instagram says only your confirmed followers can see the photos and videos you're tagged in on your profile. On a public account, anyone who visits your profile can open your Tagged section, which is another good reason to keep it tidy.

Remember that the original post is still governed by the poster's own privacy settings. Untagging takes your name off, but people who can see their account can still see the photo.

Instagram tags in Stories work differently

Mentions in Stories aren't the same as tags on posts. Instagram's help says stories you're mentioned in don't appear on your profile or in your tagged photos. It also says there isn't a way to remove your username from someone else's story or to stop them mentioning you there, though you can report the story.

You can, however, limit who can mention you at all. In the same Tags and mentions menu, there's a Who can @mention you setting with options such as Allow mentions from everyone or Don't allow mentions.

What the other person sees when you untag yourself on Instagram

The help articles don't say that the person who posted gets a notification when you remove your tag, so I won't pretend to know either way. What's certain is that your name disappears from their post. If you're worried about a friend's feelings, a quick, friendly message usually smooths things over better than silence.

If a tag is part of harassment or bullying, untag yourself, block the account, and report the post to Instagram. If you're in danger, contact the police.

Managing Instagram tags on a business or creator account

For small businesses and creators, tags are usually a gift. A customer tagging your brand is free social proof, and your Tagged section can work like a gallery of happy buyers. I'd keep tags open from everyone and turn on manual approval, so you see every tag and only show the ones that fit your brand. That's a far better approach than blocking tags outright, and my guide on improving your Instagram engagement covers other ways to make the most of what customers share.

If you can't untag yourself on Instagram

  • You're on a computer. Instagram says removing a tag isn't available there, so use the phone app.
  • You're looking at a Story mention, not a post tag. Those can't be removed, but they can be reported.
  • You tapped the photo but not your name. Tap directly on your username to bring up the option.
  • Your app is out of date. Update Instagram and try again, as menus can vary by app version.
