What Is a Finsta? Meaning, and How People Set One Up

A finsta is slang for a second, more private Instagram account, usually shared with a small group of close friends rather than everyone. The word blends "fake" and "Instagram", but there's nothing fake about the person behind it: it's the relaxed account, while the main one stays polished.

Instagram itself doesn't use the word, and there's no finsta setting. A finsta is just an ordinary extra account that its owner keeps private. Instagram makes this easy: its help page says you can have up to 10 accounts logged in at one time and switch between them without logging out.

Below is what people mean by finsta, how one is usually set up, and the real Instagram settings that make a second account private. The account and privacy details come from Instagram's Help Center, read in October 2026.

Finsta vs rinsta

Usual privacyOften publicUsually private

Rinsta means real Instagram, the main account. Neither term is official; they're labels people use to describe how they use each account.

How people set up a finsta

Instagram lets you add another profile to your account from the app:

  1. Go to your profile and tap your profile name at the top.
  2. Tap Add Instagram account, then Create new account.
  3. Enter the new profile name and tap Next.
  4. Tap Continue, then Allow and continue to add it to your Accounts Center, or tap Create password instead if you'd rather keep it out of Accounts Center.
  5. Add a phone number or email and tap Complete sign up.

That Create password instead option matters to finsta owners. Instagram offers it for people who don't want the new profile in the same Accounts Center as their main one.

Making it private

A finsta only works as a finsta if it's private. Instagram's public versus private comparison explains why:

  • On a private account, only people you approve can follow you.
  • Only your followers can see your photos and videos.
  • Your posts don't appear in search results, Explore, or hashtag and location pages for anyone.
  • Links to your posts don't show up in search engine results.
  • Your profile photo, name, username and bio are still visible to anyone, on or off Instagram.

That last point is the one finsta owners forget. A private account hides your posts, not your profile picture or bio. If the whole point is to stay low-key, keep those neutral.

The alternative: Close Friends

Many people get the finsta effect without a second account, using Instagram's Close Friends list. You choose who's on the list and then share stories, reels, notes or posts with only those people. Instagram says people aren't notified when you add or remove them, and no one can ask to be added.

The catch: anyone on the list sees a Close friends label on what you share, and may see a green ring around your profile photo. So people on the list know they're on it. If you want a separate space with its own followers, a finsta still does that better. My guide on how to hide your Instagram story from everyone covers the other story privacy controls.

Switching between your accounts

Once both accounts are added, you switch from your profile name at the top of your profile. On a computer, click More in the bottom left, then Switch accounts. My walkthrough on how to switch Instagram accounts without logging out has the details.

One thing to watch: if you set up a single login for several accounts in the past, Instagram says you can't add new accounts to it, and removing an account from that single login can't be undone.

Security on a second account

A second account needs its own protection. Instagram says each account on a shared login keeps its own individual password, and if any of your accounts use two-factor authentication, you'll be asked for a login code or to confirm the login when you sign in to them.

It also says that changing the password on the single login you use for several accounts changes it for all the linked ones. Before you lend your phone to anyone, remember they can switch to your finsta in one tap if both accounts are logged in.

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

And keep the two accounts' audiences separate. On a Close Friends list, Instagram says that if someone on the list likes, comments on or shares your reel, others on the list can see their username and how they interacted. A finsta has the same issue on a smaller scale: the people you let in can see each other's comments.

Switching between accounts leaves traces, and our guide to removing a remembered account on Instagram explains how to clear one.

Is a finsta a good idea?

For personal use, it's a reasonable way to keep a smaller, more relaxed space. Just remember private isn't secret: anyone you accept can screenshot what you post. For business owners, I'd skip the finsta and use Close Friends for behind-the-scenes content. It keeps everything on one account, and the people who matter most are already following you there.

A second account needs its own bio, and our guide to editing your Instagram bio shows how to edit it.

Frequently asked questions

What does finsta mean?

Finsta is slang for a second, more private Instagram account, usually shared with a small group of close friends. The main, more polished account is sometimes called a rinsta.

Is a finsta an official Instagram feature?

No. Instagram doesn't use the word. A finsta is an ordinary additional account that its owner keeps private.

How many Instagram accounts can you have logged in at once?

Instagram's help page says you can have up to 10 accounts logged in at one time and switch between them without logging out.

Can people see a private finsta's profile picture and bio?

Yes. Instagram says profile information, including your profile photo, name, username and bio, is visible to anyone on or off Instagram, even on a private account.

How do I make a finsta?

Add a second account from your profile: tap your profile name at the top, tap Add Instagram account, then Create new account, and follow the steps. Then set it to private in Account privacy.

Can I keep my finsta out of my main Accounts Center?

Yes. When adding a new profile, Instagram offers a Create password instead option for people who don't want the new profile added to their Accounts Center.

Do people know if they're on my Close Friends list?

They're not notified when you add or remove them, but Instagram says they'll see a Close friends label on what you share with the list and may see a green ring around your profile photo.
