Instagram has no setting to hide a single feed post from one person. To keep your posts from someone, make your account private and remove them as a follower, or block them. Hiding your story from them doesn't cover your posts, and Close Friends only applies to stories and some reels.
Most people search this expecting a hidden toggle. There isn't one. Instagram lets you hide your story from named people, but your grid of posts is all or nothing: either someone can see your profile or they can't. So the real question is which of four controls fits the person you're dealing with.
The catch with hiding your story
This is the setting most guides point you to, and it's the one that catches people out. Instagram's own help page says hiding your story from someone is different from blocking them, and it doesn't stop them seeing your profile and posts. So if you've hidden your story from an ex or a nosy colleague and thought your posts were covered too, they aren't.
Four ways to keep your posts from one person
| Option | Hides your posts? | Do they find out? | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private account + remove follower | Yes | They'll see a Follow button again if they visit | Someone you just don't want in your audience |
| Block | Yes | Not notified | Someone you want completely out |
| Close Friends | Only stories and some reels | No | Sharing personal content with a small circle |
| Restrict | No | Not notified | Calming down comments and messages |
Option 1: go private, then remove them
This is the gentlest route that hides your posts. Removing a follower only works if your account is private, so you'll need to switch first.
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu in the top right.
- Below Who can see your content, tap Account privacy.
- Turn on Private account and tap Switch to private.
- Go back to your profile and tap Followers at the top.
- Tap X next to the person, then Remove.
Now they can't see your posts unless they send a new follow request, which you can simply ignore. There's one snag for businesses: Instagram says business profiles can't be made private. You'd have to switch back to a personal account first, and most businesses won't want to do that.
Option 2: block them
Blocking is the most complete answer. People aren't notified when you block them on Instagram. And when you block from the app, Instagram blocks their account plus other existing accounts they may have and any new ones they create. That's useful if someone has a habit of coming back under a different name.
One limit worth knowing: if you already follow one of their other accounts, the block won't cover that one. You'll need to block it separately. You can block from their profile, from a chat, or from the Blocked list under Who can see your content in your menu.
Option 3: use Close Friends for the personal stuff
If what you're really trying to do is share family photos or behind-the-scenes moments with a few people, Close Friends is the better tool. You add people to the list and pick Close Friends when you share a story. Instagram says you may also be able to share a reel with your close friends list.
Two things to know before you rely on it. People on the list will know they're on it, because they see a green ring and a Close Friends label. And stories shared this way still disappear after 24 hours, just like normal stories. It won't hide your permanent grid posts from anyone.
Option 4: restrict (it won't hide your posts)
Restrict is often suggested, but it's a comment and messaging tool. If you restrict someone, they won't see when you're online or whether you've opened their chats, and their new comments on your posts are only visible to them unless you approve them. Nothing on Instagram's help page says it hides your posts, so don't count on it for that.
Hiding your story as well
If you're hiding posts from someone, you'll usually want your story hidden too. Here's the path Instagram gives:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Go to your profile and tap Menu.
- Below Who can see your content, tap Story, live and location.
- Tap Hide your story and live videos from specific people.
- Select the people and tap Done.
You can also do it from your story viewers list: tap Options next to their name and choose Hide your story.
What if it's a business account?
For a business, I'd think twice before hiding posts at all. Your posts are your shop window. If one person is causing trouble, block them and move on. If you're trying to keep personal posts away from clients, a separate personal account usually works far better than juggling privacy settings on your main one. It's also worth a look at who's started following you recently now and then, so you spot unwelcome accounts early.
And if you'd rather stop seeing their posts instead of them seeing yours, that's a different job: unfollowing someone on Instagram takes seconds and they're not told.
My verdict
Don't waste time looking for a per-post hide button, because Instagram doesn't offer one. If you just want someone out of your audience, go private and remove them. If they need to be gone for good, block them. Use Close Friends for the personal moments you only want a handful of people to see. And if you're so fed up with all of it that you need a break, deactivating your account for a while hides everything at once.
Frequently asked questions
Can I hide one Instagram post from one person?
No. Instagram doesn't offer a setting to hide a single feed post from a named person. You can hide your story from specific people, but your posts are visible to anyone who can see your profile.
Does hiding my story hide my posts on Instagram?
No. Instagram's help centre says hiding your story from someone doesn't prevent them seeing your profile and posts.
Will someone know if I remove them as a follower?
Instagram's help page on removing followers doesn't mention a notification, but if they visit your profile they'll see they no longer follow you.
Can a business account hide posts from someone?
Business profiles can't be made private, so removing followers to hide posts won't work. Blocking is the option that does work for a business account.
Does restricting someone hide my posts from them?
No. Restrict changes how their comments and messages work, such as making their new comments visible only to them. It isn't described as hiding your posts.
