To turn off Discord notification sounds on a phone, use your device's own settings: on iPhone go to Settings, Notifications, Discord and switch off Sounds; on Android open Settings, Notifications, App notifications, Discord. To silence one server or channel instead, mute it in Discord's notification settings. Desktop sound menus vary by version.
Discord's pings are lovely when you're waiting on a reply and a nightmare when a busy server buzzes your phone through a meeting. The trick is knowing which of three different switches you want: the phone's sound setting, a mute on one server or channel, or switching off a type of alert.
Discord's Help Center explains the phone and server side clearly, so that's what I've followed. It doesn't have an official article on desktop notification sounds, so I'll be upfront about that part rather than invent menu names.
How Discord decides which notification sounds you hear
Discord's mobile settings article describes two layers. Discord's in-app notification settings control whether Discord sends you a notification at all. Once it has decided to, your device's own settings control how that notification appears, whether as a banner, a sound, a badge and so on.
That's why the sound switch on a phone lives in your phone's settings and not inside Discord. It also means muting in Discord stops the alert completely, while the phone switch only changes how it arrives.
Turning off Discord notification sounds on an iPhone
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap Notifications.
- Scroll to Discord and tap it.
- Switch off Sounds.
Discord says Sounds controls whether notifications play an audible sound when received. The same screen has Alerts, Banner Style, Badges and Show Previews, so you can keep silent banners and a badge while losing the noise.
Turning off Discord notification sounds on Android
- Open your device's Settings app and tap Notifications.
- Tap App notifications, then Discord.
- Tap a category such as Messages or Direct messages to adjust that type of alert.
- Use the category's own switch to turn that alert off or change how it behaves.
Discord says Android handles these settings through the device, with a master All Discord notifications switch and categories under it. Android phones differ by maker, so the exact wording for sound may vary on yours. The categories Discord lists include Voice connected, Messages, Direct messages, Friend requests, Reaction Notifications and Friend Activity.
Stopping repeated buzzes from a busy Discord conversation
Discord describes an Android setting called Notify on every new message in conversations. When it's on, every new message gives you a buzz, ping or lit screen. When it's off, only the first message does and the rest appear quietly. If one chatty conversation is the problem, this is a gentler fix than switching Discord off.
Muting one Discord server instead of changing sounds
If one server is the noisy one, mute it. In that server's notification settings, Discord says you can switch on Mute Server to silence all of its channels at once. On mobile you can pick how long: fifteen minutes, one hour, three hours, eight hours, twenty-four hours, or until you turn it back on.
- Muting a server also disables its mobile push notifications.
- You'll still get @everyone mentions.
- Mute a server from its name at the top of the server, then Notification Settings on a computer, or the notifications option on mobile.
Setting one Discord channel to mentions only or nothing
Discord's notification overrides let you treat a single channel differently from the rest of the server. For each channel or category you can choose All, Mentions, Nothing or Mute, and Mute silences everything including @mentions.
On a computer you can also right-click a channel and open its notification settings. On mobile, long-press the channel and tap its notification settings. This is the tidiest way to keep a server mostly quiet but still hear about the one channel you care about.
Discord sound settings on a desktop or laptop
Here's the honest bit. Discord's Help Center has no article I could find that walks through desktop notification sound toggles, so I won't name buttons I can't verify. What it does confirm is that a desktop notifications area exists under User Settings, since it's where game activity notifications are managed. Look through that area, and the sound options inside it, for the switch you want. Menu names can differ by app version.

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
If what you want is no pop-up at all from one server, the mute options above work the same on desktop.
Notification sounds versus other Discord sounds
Notification pings are separate from sounds played inside a voice channel. If the noise you're hearing is a clip being played by someone in a call, that's a different feature, which I explain in how to use the Discord soundboard. And a yellow moon next to your name isn't a sound setting either; it's a status, covered in what idle means on Discord.
A calmer Discord for creators and community owners
If you run a community, quieter doesn't have to mean missing things. Mute the general chat, leave mentions on for the support or announcements channel and keep direct messages loud. You'll still see who needs you without every message pulling you out of your work.
