How to Use Soundboard on Discord (Play and Add Sounds)

To use Soundboard on Discord, join a voice channel, open the Soundboard button in the voice controls, hover over a sound and click Play. Everyone in the channel hears it. The detail people trip over: Discord says you only need Nitro to use sounds from other servers.

A well-timed airhorn can rescue a quiet voice chat, and a bad one can empty it. Soundboard is Discord's way of letting people drop short clips into a call, and if you run a community for customers, students or fans, it's a light way to add personality to your events and hangouts.

The slightly confusing bit is that Soundboard belongs to the server, not to you. That decides who can play sounds, who can add them and where they work. Here's how it fits together, based on Discord's own guide and blog.

Playing Soundboard sounds on Discord from a computer

You need to be in a voice channel first. Discord's help guide describes this on desktop:

  1. Join a voice channel in a server where Soundboard is switched on.
  2. Click the Soundboard button in the voice controls. Discord describes it as a confetti icon at the bottom-right of the voice panel.
  3. Hover over a sound you like.
  4. Click its Play icon.

The sound plays for everyone in the voice channel. Discord's guide adds that anyone who's deafened won't hear it, which is a polite way of saying you can't prank someone who's switched themselves off.

Using the Discord Soundboard on your phone

On mobile the control sits in a tray rather than a button strip. Discord's guide describes the route like this:

  1. Join a voice call.
  2. Tap the screen to show the toolbar, then drag it up.
  3. Tap Soundboard.
  4. Tap any sound to play it.

Discord's blog describes the same thing as dragging up the tab from the bottom and tapping the Soundboard button. Menu labels shift between app versions, so look for the word Soundboard rather than an exact icon.

Previewing and favouriting Discord Soundboard sounds

Two small controls make the panel far nicer to use. Click the speaker icon on a sound to preview it only for yourself, which is ideal when you're not sure what a clip sounds like. Star a sound to favourite it so your best ones stay at the top. Discord's blog says favourites sync across platforms.

You also get your own volume control. In User Settings, under Voice & Video, there's a Soundboard volume setting. Discord's blog says setting it to 0% mutes sounds, though you'll still see their emoji appear.

Adding your own sounds to a Discord server Soundboard

Here's where the server ownership shows. Sounds live in a server, so you need permission to add them there. Discord's help says members need the Create Expressions permission to add sounds, and Manage Expressions to edit or remove them. Uploading is a computer or browser job, as Discord's guide says it's not available on mobile.

  1. Open Server Settings.
  2. Choose Soundboard.
  3. Press Upload Sound and pick your file.
  4. Give it a name and a matching emoji.

Discord's blog lists the limits for uploaded clips: MP3 only, up to 512 KB and up to 5 seconds long. It also mentions an optional volume adjustment for loud sounds, which is a kindness to your members' ears. Use clips you made yourself or have the right to use, rather than lifting audio from someone else's work.

How many Soundboard slots a Discord server gets

Slots are limited, so choosing carefully matters. Discord's guide says servers have 8 preloaded sound slots to start. Server Boosting then adds more: Tier 1 has 24, Tier 2 has 36 and Tier 3 has 48. If your list is full, remove a clip you rarely use before uploading a new one.

Who can use Discord Soundboard: permissions and Nitro

If a button is missing for you, it's probably a permission. Discord's help says admins control access with the Use Soundboard permission, which they can set per role in Server Settings, Roles, or per channel under the channel's permissions. There's also a separate setting for external sounds.

Nitro is only needed for sounds from other servers. Discord's guide says you need active Nitro to use Soundboard sounds across servers, but you don't need it to use a server's own Soundboard. If you want to keep your community calm, setting up roles on your Discord server is how you decide who gets the Use Soundboard permission.

Keeping Discord Soundboard fun for a business or creator community

If you run a Discord for a brand or a group of followers, a few house rules help:

  • Tell newcomers in your rules channel which sounds are for events and which are for banter.
  • Keep one or two clips that match your brand, like a cheerful welcome sound for new members.
  • Restrict Use Soundboard in your quiet study or support channels.
  • Have a plan for anyone who spams: the right permissions, then reporting someone on Discord if it crosses a line.

If the Soundboard button is missing on Discord

A missing button usually comes down to one of these:

  • You're not in a voice channel yet. The button appears once you've joined.
  • Your role doesn't have the Use Soundboard permission in that server or channel.
  • You're trying to play another server's sounds without Nitro.
  • You're on an older app version. Update Discord and check again.

If you're a server owner and a member can't upload, check Create Expressions first. And if one person keeps flooding a call, my guide to blocking someone on Discord is worth knowing about.
