To cancel X Premium, cancel it on the platform you used to subscribe: on x.com if you paid on the web, in your iPhone's Apple subscriptions if you paid in the iOS app, or in Google Play if you paid on Android. X says to cancel at least 24 hours before it renews, and your Premium features stay until the end of the period you've paid for.
The part that trips people up is that there isn't one cancel button for everyone. X's FAQ says you manage your subscription from Settings on the platform where you subscribed, and that app subscribers must go to Apple or Google for cancellation and refund issues. So the first job is working out who's billing you.
Step one: find out where you subscribed
X's how-to page explains where to check. Open the Profile menu in the app or the side navigation on x.com, select Premium, then Preferences in the app. A card at the top shows your current Premium tier with Manage on the right, which tells you you're enrolled. Your bank or card statement is the quickest clue to who bills you: an Apple or Google Play charge means you subscribed in an app.
Cancel X Premium you bought on x.com
- Go to x.com on a computer or phone browser and sign in.
- Select Premium in the side navigation.
- Find the card at the top showing your current tier and select Manage.
- Follow the cancel option for your subscription and confirm it.
If the card doesn't show a web subscription, you almost certainly paid through Apple or Google, and you'll need one of the next two sections instead.
Cancel X Premium on an iPhone (paid through Apple)
Apple's own support page gives these steps for any subscription bought through the App Store.
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap the X subscription.
- Tap Cancel Subscription. You might need to scroll down to find it.
Apple adds a useful check: if there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiry message in red text, the subscription is already cancelled.
Cancel X Premium on Android (paid through Google Play)
- On your computer, go to your subscriptions in Google Play and sign in to the Google account that pays for X.
- For the X subscription, click Manage.
- Click Cancel subscription.
- Pick a reason in the pop-up and click Continue.
Google warns about one easy mistake: uninstalling the app doesn't cancel the subscription. Deleting X from your phone leaves the payment running.
What happens after you cancel
| Question | What X, Apple or Google say |
|---|---|
| When do Premium features stop? | At the end of your billing cycle, per X's FAQ |
| When should I cancel? | At least 24 hours before auto-renewal to avoid the next charge |
| Do I get a refund? | X says cancelling won't refund amounts already paid, and subscriptions are non-refundable unless the law requires it |
| What about the blue checkmark? | It stays until the end of the term you paid for, unless your account is suspended or X removes it |
| What if I paid in an app? | Apple or Google handle app refunds and cancellations, not X |
Downgrade instead of cancelling
If the price is the problem rather than X itself, a cheaper tier may do. X's FAQ says that on the web, when you downgrade, your current plan stays active until the billing cycle ends, then switches to the new tier at its rate. You won't get a refund for the current cycle, but you keep features like editing posts on Basic.
Subscribers in India can compare the tiers in rupees in X Premium in rupees.
Two situations that need a different route
If someone gifted you Premium, X's FAQ says that to cancel a gifted subscription, you message @Subscriptions on X. If you've found a Premium subscription you never took out, X says to cancel it, change your password and turn on extra security settings, all from Settings.
X also notes that Direct Message support from @Subscriptions is only open to Premium subscribers, and warns that its chatbot there can give inaccurate answers and doesn't issue refunds. Keep screenshots of anything it tells you.

If you're thinking of a different tier instead of cancelling, the tiers and what they cost are set out in X Premium price.
The verdict
Cancel where you paid, and do it a couple of days before the renewal date rather than on the day. If you're cancelling because of the cost, check the tiers first: dropping from Premium+ to Premium or Basic might keep the features you use. Before you go, my guide to the Premium features worth knowing shows what you'll lose. The same platform rule applies to other apps too, as in cancelling YouTube Premium and cancelling a ChatGPT subscription.
