How to Trim a Video in Canva (Manual and Auto-Trim)

To trim a video in Canva, click the video in your design and select the trim icon in the toolbar. Drag the sliders at each end of the highlighted section to cut the start and end, then click Done. In a video design, trim the clip in the timeline instead, or try Auto-trim to tidy the ends for you.

The first few seconds of most phone videos are fumbling with the camera, and the last few are reaching to stop recording. Trimming those off is the single quickest way to make a clip look professional, and Canva does it without a separate video editor.

How to trim a video in Canva, step by step

  1. Click the video on your design to select it.
  2. Select the trim icon in the toolbar above the editor.
  3. You'll see the video as a strip, with the kept part highlighted and the rest greyed out.
  4. Drag the slider at the start to cut the beginning.
  5. Drag the slider at the end to cut the ending.
  6. Click Done to save.

Trimming in Canva isn't destructive. The cut parts are hidden, not deleted, so you can open the trim tool again later and drag the sliders back out if you trimmed too much.

Trimming in a video design vs a static design

This is the thing that confuses most people. Canva says the trim icon only shows on videos added to a static design, such as a social post or presentation. If you're working in a video design with a timeline along the bottom, you trim differently: select the clip in the timeline and drag its ends inwards.

Let Canva trim it for you

Canva has two automatic options inside the trim tool:

ToolWhat it doesBest for
Auto-trimTidies the start and end of your video in one goQuick clean-ups of talking-head clips
HighlightsCuts a longer video into several short clips you choose fromTurning one long recording into multiple short posts

With Highlights, you pick the clips you want in the order you want them, select Add selection to design and Canva places them as separate pages or elements. You can still adjust each one by hand afterwards. These tools use AI, so check your AI allowance if you use them a lot.

The catch: the trim tool may not be there yet

Canva says this feature is rolling out gradually and may not be available to everyone yet. If you can't see the trim icon, first check whether you're in a video design (use the timeline instead). If you're in a static design and it's still missing, the timeline approach is your workaround: create a video design, add the clip and trim it there.

How to cut out the middle of a video

Trimming only cuts the start and end. To remove a section in the middle, such as a cough or a wrong word, split the clip in the timeline of a video design, delete the bad section and let the two halves join up. It's worth doing for talking-head videos, where one stumble can make people scroll on.

Trimming tips for social video

  • Start on movement or speech. Cut the dead air at the start ruthlessly.
  • End on the last word or action. A long fade at the end loses viewers.
  • Keep reels short. Shorter clips are more likely to be watched to the end.
  • Trim the music to match the video and fade it out.
  • Watch the result on your phone before posting.

Why I trim before I do anything else

When I edit a clip, trimming is always the first job. There's no point adding captions, music or text to seconds you're going to cut anyway, and once it's trimmed you can see how long the video really is. If it's still too long after you've cut the start and end, that's your sign to split it into two posts rather than squeezing it. It's also worth trimming a few frames tighter than feels natural. On social media, a clip that starts a beat early feels slow, and people don't wait around.

Downloading your trimmed video

Select Share, then Download and choose MP4 Video. On the free plan, leave the quality at 1080p, because changing it brings up an upgrade prompt. Free accounts can download videos up to 30 minutes long, which is plenty for social clips.

What videos can you trim in Canva?

Anything you can upload. Canva accepts MOV, GIF, MP4, MPEG, MKV and WEBM files up to 1GB, so phone footage, screen recordings and camera clips all work. If you record your screen for tutorials, my guide to recording screen and audio together helps you capture cleaner footage before you trim it.

My verdict

Select the video, tap the trim icon, drag the sliders and click Done. That's all most clips need. In a video design, trim in the timeline instead. Try Auto-trim for quick tidy-ups and Highlights to turn one long recording into several short posts. For more ways to get value from your video, see my guide to making effective short videos.
