How to Download a Canva Video: MP4 Settings That Work

To download a Canva video, open the design, select Share, then Download, and choose MP4 Video as the file type. Keep the quality at 1080p, choose which pages to include and select Download. Free accounts can download videos up to 30 minutes long at 1080p.

You've made a reel, an ad or a slideshow in Canva and now you need the actual video file to post or send. Downloading takes seconds, but a couple of settings decide whether you get a crisp file, an upgrade prompt or a copyright claim later. Here's how to get it right.

How to download a video from Canva

  1. Open your video design.
  2. Optional: select the play or preview button to watch it through first.
  3. Select Share, then Download.
  4. Under file type, choose MP4 Video.
  5. Leave the quality at 1080p unless you have a reason to change it.
  6. Choose All pages, This Page or Custom.
  7. Select Download and wait for the file to render.

MP4 or GIF?

FormatBest forSound?
MP4 VideoReels, TikToks, ads, YouTube, anything with music or voiceYes
GIFShort looping animations for emails, websites and chatsNo

If your design has music or a voiceover, it has to be MP4. GIFs are silent and best kept short.

Canva video download limits

PlanMP4 lengthMP4 max resolutionGIF length
Canva FreeUp to 30 minutes1920 x 1080pxUp to 1 minute
Pro, Teams, Nonprofits, EducationUp to 2 hours3840 x 2160pxUp to 2 minutes

The catch: changing the quality on a free account triggers an upgrade prompt

This confuses a lot of people. On Canva Free, if you change the MP4 quality from the default 1080p, even to a lower setting like 480p or 720p, Canva shows an upgrade prompt. It looks like a download error, but it isn't. Canva's advice is simple: keep the quality at the default 1080p and download again. 1080p is the right size for nearly every social platform anyway, and 4K is only offered on desktop.

Check your music before you post

Here's the step that saves headaches later. If you used premium audio in your video and you're posting it on social media or video sites, Canva recommends verifying your licence when you download, to avoid copyright claims. A muted reel or a claim on your YouTube video is a frustrating way to find out. If you're unsure, use one of Canva's free tracks or audio you own.

Why your Canva video won't download

  • The button says Fix issue. Something needs sorting first, such as a video that's still uploading or a daily download limit.
  • The video is too long for your plan. Free accounts top out at 30 minutes for MP4.
  • It's taking forever. Long, high-resolution videos take a while to render. Stay on the page and keep your connection stable.
  • Elements look wrong in the file. Preview the design first and check any animations or embedded content.

Downloading several videos at once

If you've batched a month of reels, bulk download saves time. Canva supports MP4 and GIF in bulk, with up to 25 designs at once when exporting as MP4 or GIF. Everything comes in a single ZIP file, so unzip it before uploading.

Downloading on your phone

On the Canva mobile app, open the design, tap the share icon, choose Download and pick MP4 Video. The file saves to your camera roll, ready to post. Keep your phone unlocked and the app open while it renders, or the download may stall.

Where to post your downloaded video

PlatformWhat to check before uploading
Instagram ReelsVertical design, text away from the bottom caption area
TikTokVertical design, captions on, music you have rights to use
YouTubeHorizontal or Shorts format, a custom thumbnail ready
LinkedInCaptions on, a strong first frame because many people watch muted
Your websiteKeep the file size down so the page loads quickly

One downloaded MP4 can often go to three or four places, but trim or resize it for each one. A clip that's perfect for a Reel can look awkward squeezed into a horizontal YouTube player.

Tips for videos that look sharp on social

  • Design at the platform's size from the start, such as 1,080 x 1,920 for vertical video.
  • Keep text away from the top and bottom, where app buttons sit.
  • Download at 1080p and let the platform handle compression.
  • Add captions so people can follow with the sound off.

My verdict

Share, Download, MP4 Video, 1080p: that's the right setting for almost everything you'll post. On the free plan, don't touch the quality setting or you'll hit an upgrade prompt that looks like an error. Check your music licence before posting, and use bulk download when you've batched a month of content.
