To see who follows you on Instagram, go to your profile and tap Followers. For recent followers, check your Notifications, where Instagram tells you when someone follows you, or open someone's profile and use See shared activity to see when they followed you. Public accounts also get a New followers count in Insights.
The Followers list shows everyone, but it isn't built for spotting who's new, and that's where most people get stuck. Instagram gives you three better tools for recent followers, and one of them shows you the exact moment someone started following you. Here's how each one works and what it can and can't tell you.
Where your full followers list lives
- Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Followers at the top of your profile.
- Scroll the list, or use the search bar at the top to check whether a specific person follows you.
Searching the list is the quickest answer to "does this person follow me?" Type their name and they either appear or they don't.
Three ways to spot recent followers
| Tool | Where to find it | What it tells you | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notifications | The heart or Notifications icon | Each new follow as it happens | Easy to miss once lots of activity piles up |
| Shared activity | Their profile, Options, See shared activity | When you each followed the other | Mobile and iPad only; one of you must follow the other |
| Insights | Professional dashboard on a public account | How many new followers, and gains or losses over time | Numbers, not names; follower trends need at least 100 followers |
1. Notifications
Instagram lists following you among the reasons it sends notifications, along with likes, comments, mentions and messages. Open Notifications and you'll see new follows alongside your other activity. It's the closest thing to a recent followers list, but it gets buried fast on a busy account.
2. Shared activity
This is the tool most people don't know about. Open the profile of someone who follows you, tap Options (the three dots) in the top right, then See shared activity. Instagram shows how long they've followed you and how long you've followed them, along with any likes, comments and tags between you. You can also reach it from your own profile: tap Following, then Options next to a name.
It won't give you a list of everyone new, but it answers the question "when did this person follow me?" precisely. It only works in the mobile app and on iPad, and only when at least one of you follows the other.
3. Insights
If your account's public, Instagram gives you free insights. The overview includes New followers, and you can pick a timeframe within the past 90 days. Once you have at least 100 followers, the follower insights also show growth: how many you've gained and lost. You get numbers rather than names, but it's the best way to see whether a post or a week of activity brought people in.
Why some followers don't show up
If someone says they've followed you and they're not in your list, check these first:
- They're waiting in the Flagged folder. On public accounts, Instagram sends follows from accounts it thinks are spam, bots or irrelevant as requests. Tap Followers and look for Flagged. If you don't approve them within 30 days, they're automatically declined.
- They're in Potential spam. Accounts likely to be spam go to a separate list and can't follow you until you confirm them.
- Your account's private. Their follow is a request until you accept it in Notifications.
That 30-day rule is the catch worth knowing. A real person can get flagged by mistake, and if you never open that folder, their follow simply disappears. If you'd rather review everything yourself, you can turn the filter off in Menu, Follow and invite friends, then switch off Flag for review.
Cleaning up who follows you
Seeing your followers often leads straight to wanting some of them gone. Your options depend on your account type:
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
- Flagged followers can be removed in one go with Remove all. They're taken off your count and list and aren't told.
- Spam followers can be cleared with Remove all spam followers in the Potential spam list.
- Private accounts can remove any follower: tap Followers, then Remove next to their name.
Instagram notes that on public accounts, anyone on Instagram and Threads can see the public accounts that follow you. So a follower list full of bots isn't just untidy, it's on show. Personal or professional account?
Insights only appear on public accounts, and the fuller tools sit with professional (business or creator) accounts. If you've switched to a personal account and wondered where your follower numbers went, that's why. My guide on switching off a business account on Instagram explains what you keep and what you lose before you change.
My advice
Use Notifications for a quick daily look at who's new, shared activity when you want to know when one particular person followed you, and Insights to judge whether your posts are bringing people in. And open that Flagged folder every week or so. It's the one place real followers can quietly vanish, and it takes seconds to check.
