Open your profile, tap the menu, go to Settings, then Account type and tools, and choose Switch to personal account. Confirm when Instagram asks, and your profile goes back to being a regular personal account. Your posts, followers and chats stay, but business tools such as insights and contact buttons go away.
Switching off a business account is quick, and you can switch back later if you change your mind. The only real decision is whether a personal account or a creator account suits you better, so I've covered both below.
One note before the steps: Instagram moves its menus around often. If a name looks different on your phone, open Settings and search for the words account type. That usually gets you to the right place.
Before you switch: a quick checklist
- Take screenshots of any insights you want to keep, because the numbers are tied to the professional tools.
- Pause or finish any promotion you have running, so nothing is left half-set-up.
- Note down the contact details shown on your profile, such as the email or phone button, since those buttons will disappear.
- Check whether your profile is linked to a Facebook Page. You may want to leave that link alone, but it's worth knowing it's there.
How to switch to a personal account on iPhone
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
- Tap the menu (the three lines) at the top right.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Scroll down to Account type and tools and tap it.
- Tap Switch account type, or Switch to personal account if you see that wording straight away.
- Confirm your choice when Instagram asks.
That's it. Your profile should now show as personal, and the Professional dashboard disappears from your profile.
How to switch to a personal account on Android
On Android the route is almost the same, which is handy if you share tips with friends on a different phone.
- Open the app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap the menu at the top right and open Settings and privacy.
- Find Account type and tools.
- Choose Switch account type, then Switch to personal account.
- Confirm.
If you can't see the option, update the app first. Older versions sometimes hide newer settings, and a fresh update fixes more problems than you'd expect.
What you lose when you switch
Going personal removes the extras that come with a professional profile. In general terms, you'll lose:
- Insights, the built-in numbers for reach, followers and post performance.
- Contact buttons that let people email, call or find directions from your profile.
- The tools for promoting posts and running ads from the app.
- The business category label that shows under your name.
- Some shop and booking features that rely on a professional account.
There's one upside. Business accounts have usually had a narrower music library for reels because of rights rules, and a personal account tends to have a wider choice. That can change, so check the audio search in your own app.
If you're only switching off because the numbers confuse you, you may not need to. I've explained how to measure engagement on a business account in plain terms, and it might be easier than leaving.
Personal, creator or business: what's the difference?
| Account type | Best for | Insights | Contact buttons | Music choice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal | Friends, family and hobby posting | No | No | Usually the widest |
| Creator | Influencers, artists and public figures | Yes | Yes | Usually wide |
| Business | Shops, brands and services | Yes | Yes | Usually more limited |
Treat that table as a general guide. Instagram adjusts what each type can do, so the app is the final word.
What stays exactly the same
People often worry that switching will wipe something important, so here's the reassuring list. Your username, bio, profile picture, posts, stories, highlights, followers and direct messages all stay put. Your saved posts and collections stay too.
What changes is how the account is set up behind the scenes, plus what other people can see on your profile. If you decide a personal profile is right, you also get the choice to make the account private. Check the privacy settings in your own app to see the options on your version.
Who should stay on business
I wouldn't switch off if you sell something through Instagram, take bookings by message, or rely on the contact buttons. Those people lose real convenience on a personal account, and customers lose an easy way to reach them.
I would switch off if the account is really just for friends, if you've stopped using the insights, or if you want a quieter profile without the business label. There's no right answer, only what suits how you use the app. And if you're unsure, try creator first, because it's the gentlest step down.

Switch to creator instead?
If you want to keep your insights but feel a business label is too corporate, a creator account is worth a look. It keeps most of the numbers and the contact options, and many people find it fits a personal brand better than a shop-style profile.
Creator accounts suit you if you post as yourself: a coach, a photographer, a writer. Business suits you if there's a company or a product behind the name. If you go the other way and keep running a business profile, these common business profile mistakes are worth fixing before you decide it isn't working.
If the switch option isn't showing
- Update Instagram from your app store, then restart the app.
- Check you're logged into the right account, especially if you manage more than one.
- Look under Settings for a search bar and type account type to jump straight to it.
- Log out and back in, which clears up many small glitches.
- If it still won't appear, wait a day and try again, because some settings roll out in stages.
None of these is a guarantee, but they cover the usual causes. If you're still stuck, the Help section in your settings is the place to report it.
Switching back later
Changing your mind is easy. Go to Settings, then Account type and tools, and choose Switch to professional account. Pick business or creator, choose a category, and add your contact details again.
What you can't count on is old insights history coming back, so don't rely on it. Treat the screenshots from your checklist as your record. If you're planning a serious push on the platform later, have a read of these Instagram business strategies before you switch back.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose followers if I switch to a personal account?
No. Your followers, posts and chats stay when you change account type. What goes is the professional tooling, such as insights and contact buttons.
Will my posts be deleted?
No. Switching account type doesn't delete your posts, stories or highlights.
Can I switch back to a business account later?
Yes. Go to Settings, then Account type and tools, and choose Switch to professional account. Old insights history may not come back, so save screenshots first.
Do my followers get told when I switch?
Instagram doesn't send them a notice. They may spot the missing contact buttons or business label on your profile.
Is switching account type free?
Yes. It's a setting in the app and doesn't need any purchase.
