The best AI knowledge base software stores your company's answers in one place and uses AI to search them, draft articles and answer questions for staff or customers. Some are built for public help centres, others for internal wikis your team checks in Slack. Ten options follow in no particular order.
Most growing businesses reach a point where the same questions arrive in the inbox and the team chat every week, and the answers live in one or two people's heads.
The ten tools below are listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the tool's own website, read this week. If you're comparing traditional options too, my guide to knowledge base software covers the wider field.
AI knowledge base tools side by side
In the free plan column, Yes means the tool's own site names a free plan, a free account, a free allowance or an open source version. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to start for free.

Why an AI answer is only as good as your articles
It's tempting to think AI will fix a messy knowledge base. The UK government's AI Playbook explains why it won't: it describes hallucination as large language models creating content that appears plausible but may be factually incorrect, because they return the most likely output based on patterns in their training data.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
The playbook's advice is to have checks and assurance in place when you use generative AI. For a knowledge base, that means clear articles, an owner for each one and a review date, so the AI has accurate material to answer from and staff can spot an answer that doesn't look right.
Help centre for customers or wiki for the team?
Customer-facing knowledge bases focus on search, branding and deflecting support tickets before they reach your inbox. Internal tools focus on answering staff questions quickly, often inside Slack or the tools your team already uses.
Some businesses need both. If that's you, look for a tool that keeps public and private articles separate but lets you manage them in one place.
Questions to ask before you choose an AI knowledge base
- Who'll read it most: customers, staff or both?
- Can it answer questions inside Slack, your app or your website?
- Does the AI show which article an answer came from?
- Can I set owners and review dates for articles?
- Will it import the docs I already have?
- Can I keep some articles private and others public?
Signs your knowledge base needs attention
- Staff still ask the same questions. The answers aren't findable.
- Articles contradict each other. Merge and assign owners.
- The AI gives odd answers. Check the articles behind them.
- Nobody knows who updates what. Name an owner for every page.
Do you make an AI knowledge base tool? Tool makers can ask to be considered for a featured place on this list.
My plain advice on choosing an AI knowledge base
Start with the twenty questions you answer most often and write them up clearly before you switch anything on. A small, accurate knowledge base beats a huge one full of out-of-date pages, and the AI will look far smarter for it.
Then give every article a named owner. If you're feeding documents to AI, my knowledge base prep checklist shows how to tidy them first so the answers you get back are ones you'd stand behind.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI knowledge base software?
AI knowledge base software stores your business answers in one place and uses AI to search them, write or improve articles and answer questions for staff or customers.
Is there a free AI knowledge base?
Several tools offer trials and some have free starting options. The free plan column above shows what each tool's own site says.
Can AI answers from a knowledge base be wrong?
Yes. The UK government's AI Playbook warns that generative AI can produce plausible content that's factually incorrect, so keep articles accurate and checked.
What's the difference between a wiki and a knowledge base?
A wiki is usually an open, internal space for team notes, while a knowledge base is more structured and often published for customers.
Can an AI knowledge base answer questions in Slack?
Several tools answer staff questions inside Slack or other team chat apps, using your own articles.
How often should I update knowledge base articles?
Give each article an owner and a review date, and update it whenever the process or product it describes changes.
