To find people on Instagram, tap Search at the bottom, type their name or username, then tap Accounts to filter the results. To find friends you already know, go to Profile, Menu, Follow and invite friends, then Follow contacts, and Instagram will suggest accounts from your phone's contact list.
Those are the two official routes, and Instagram's own help centre names exactly these two: search, or connect your contacts. Everything else, like the suggestions in Explore, is Instagram choosing people for you. If someone doesn't show up at all, there's usually a reason, and I'll cover that further down.
Way 1: search by name or username
Search works best when you know the person's username, because names are shared by thousands of accounts. Here's the route in the app:
- Tap Search (the magnifying glass) at the bottom of the screen to open Search & Explore.
- Tap the Search bar at the top.
- Type their name or username, then tap the search button on your keyboard.
- Tap Accounts below the search bar so you only see profiles, not reels or hashtags.
- Open the right profile and tap Follow.
That Accounts filter is the step most people skip. Instagram's search results mix in For you, Audio, Tags, Places and Reels, so a common name can disappear under a pile of videos. Filtering to Accounts cuts the noise straight away.
A tip that saves a lot of scrolling: if you know where someone works, a hobby they post about or a nickname, try that as well. Profile names and bios are searchable text, and Instagram says profile information on both public and private accounts is visible to anyone, so even a private account should still appear in results with its photo and bio.
Way 2: find friends from your phone contacts
This is how to find friends on Instagram without guessing usernames. Instagram matches the numbers and emails in your phone with accounts and suggests them to you.
- Tap your Profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Menu (three lines) in the top right.
- Below How others can interact with you, tap Follow and invite friends.
- Tap Follow contacts.
- Tap Continue to allow access. If your phone blocks it, tap Go to settings and allow Instagram to see your contacts first.
Once that's on, Instagram sends you suggestions as notifications or in your feed, and you tap Follow on the ones you want.
What syncing contacts means for your privacy
This is the part nobody reads before tapping Continue, so here's what Instagram's help pages say happens next:
| What you might assume | What Instagram says |
|---|---|
| It's a one-off upload | Your contact list is periodically synced, and contacts are re-uploaded the next time Instagram syncs |
| Only you see your contacts | True: your device's contacts are only visible to you |
| Turning it off in Instagram stops it | Not on its own: you also need to switch off contacts access in your phone settings, on every device logged into your account |
| Deleting synced contacts is instant | It can take up to 90 days, and Instagram may still make suggestions from them during that time |
| It only affects who you find | Confirming your phone number or email can also get your account recommended to people who have your details saved |
That last row works both ways. It's why your dentist or an old landlord might pop up in your suggestions, and why they might see you too. If you'd rather not be found that way, keep that in mind before you confirm your number on your account.
If the suggestion notifications get annoying, you can switch them off without turning off syncing: Profile, Menu, Notifications, Following and Followers, then turn Account Suggestions off.
Way 3: let Explore suggest people
Tap Search and scroll the grid below the search bar. Instagram says Explore shows photos and videos from accounts you're not already following, and you can tap any post, then Follow. Meta explains that an AI system picks and ranks these suggested accounts, so they lean towards what you already like and watch. That's useful for finding creators in a niche. It's useless for finding a specific person.

Why you can't find someone on Instagram
If you've typed the exact username and nothing comes up, one of these is usually behind it:
- They've blocked you. Instagram's help says a blocked person can't search for the account that blocked them. They won't have been notified of anything, and neither will you.
- They've changed their username. If the old one's all you've got, search their real name instead or ask a mutual friend for the new one.
- They've deactivated or deleted the account. If they've stepped away from Instagram, there's nothing to find until they come back.
- You've misspelled a dot or underscore. Usernames are exact, so jane.smith and jane_smith are different people.
- You've hit the follow limit. You can find them but can't follow: Instagram doesn't let anyone follow more than 7,500 people and shows an error message instead.
If it's a private account, you'll still find it. You just won't see their posts until they approve your follow request.
Finding people for a business account
If you're using Instagram for a business, finding people is really about finding the right people. Search by the topic your customers care about, filter to Accounts, and look at who's commenting thoughtfully on the bigger names in your field. Those are the people worth following and talking to. I've written more about growing that way in how to get followers on Instagram without posting every day, and if you're still deciding how much time Instagram deserves, my piece on why Instagram matters in online marketing is a good starting point.
My advice
Use search with the Accounts filter for anyone whose username you know, and it'll take you seconds. Use contact syncing only if you're happy with the trade: it's quick for finding friends, but it keeps re-uploading your address book and can make you easier to find too. I'd turn it on, follow the friends you want, then switch contacts access off in your phone settings. You get the benefit without leaving the door open.
