How to See Archived Posts on Instagram (and Restore Them)

To see archived posts on Instagram, open your profile, tap Menu, tap Your activity, tap Archived, then choose Posts archive. Instagram's help says archiving hides a post from your profile but keeps its likes and comments. To bring one back, open it, tap Options and choose Show on profile.

Archiving is Instagram's tidy-up button. You can hide a post you've outgrown without losing the likes, the comments or the caption you spent twenty minutes on. The only snag is that archived posts vanish from your grid, and it isn't obvious where they went.

They haven't gone anywhere. I've gone through Instagram's Help Centre articles on archiving, and this is where they live and how to get them back. I'll flag where the menu names differ between articles, because they do.

Where archived Instagram posts are kept

Instagram's help page says that archiving a post hides it from your profile so your followers and other people on Instagram can't see it. The post keeps all its likes and comments. Only you can look at it, from a section inside your own account.

This is useful for a business or creator profile. A promotion that has ended, a dated announcement or an old design can come off the grid quietly, and you can show it again later if it becomes relevant.

Opening your Instagram posts archive on a phone

Instagram's help page for finding archived content gives these steps for the iPhone and Android apps:

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below How you use Instagram, tap Your activity.
  4. Below Removed and archived content, tap Archived.
  5. Use the heading at the top of the screen to switch between archives, and choose Posts archive.

Your archived posts appear there. Tap one to open it and look at its likes and comments.

Another Instagram article on bringing archived posts back words the same route a little differently, with Archive listed below How you use Instagram instead of Your activity. Menus get rearranged in app updates, so if one label isn't there, try the other. They lead to the same place.

Why Instagram says you can't see the archive on a computer

If you're on a laptop and can't find any archive link, you aren't missing anything obvious. Instagram's help page for viewing archived content says the feature isn't available on computers, and points you to the phone apps. Use the app on your phone or tablet for this job.

Putting an archived Instagram post back on your profile

Once you've found a post in the posts archive, getting it back takes four taps. Instagram says the post returns to its original place on your profile, not to the top of your grid.

  1. Open the posts archive, using the steps above.
  2. Tap the post you'd like to show again.
  3. Tap Options in the top right.
  4. Select Show on profile.

That original place detail matters. If you've posted a lot since, the old post slots back into the date order of your grid, which means older posts sit further down, so scroll down your grid to check it rather than looking at the top. If you want a post to be seen at the top again, an archived post won't do that for you.

Archiving an Instagram post in the first place

For completeness, here's the other half. Instagram's article on archiving says:

Work with me

Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  1. Tap your profile picture to go to your profile.
  2. Tap the post you'd like to archive.
  3. Tap Options in the top right.
  4. Select Archive.

The archive hides the post and keeps its engagement, which is the reason many people prefer it to deleting. Instagram also has a separate article on archiving several posts at once, so if you're clearing out a lot of old content, look for that.

If the post just needs a change rather than a hiding, my guide to editing an Instagram post with multiple pictures covers that, and it's often quicker than archiving. And if you're tidying your profile ahead of a push, writing an Instagram bio that gets follows is the other thing I'd refresh at the same time.

If you can't see your archived Instagram posts

Check these in order:

  • Make sure you're on the phone app, not a computer.
  • Check you're logged in to the right account. Archives belong to one account at a time.
  • Look at the heading at the top of the archive screen and make sure Posts archive is selected, because the screen can show other archived content first.
  • Update the Instagram app, since menu names such as Your activity and Archive have moved between versions.
  • If a post you archived is missing, remember it may never have been archived. A deleted post is a different thing and isn't in this section.
  • If the screen won't load, restart the app, then report the problem through Profile, Menu, Help, Report a Problem.

A simple habit for your Instagram archive

Every few months, open your posts archive and ask whether anything there deserves to come back. Evergreen tips, a popular behind-the-scenes post or a seasonal favourite can all get a second showing. It's two minutes well spent, and it keeps your grid honest about what you do now.
