Post drafts live at the top of your gallery: tap + (create), choose Post and look for Drafts or Manage above your photos. Reels drafts live on your profile: open the Reels tab and tap the Drafts tile at the start of the grid. Tap any draft to carry on editing.
Instagram only shows these sections when you have a draft saved. If you can't see a Drafts option anywhere, there's nothing saved on the phone you're holding, and that's usually down to the catch further down this page: drafts belong to your phone, not your account.
Steps to find your post drafts
- Open Instagram.
- Tap + (create).
- Choose Post.
- At the top of your gallery, look for a Drafts section or a Manage option.
- Tap the draft you want. It opens with your edits, filters and caption as you left them.
- Finish it and share it, or tap back and save it as a draft again.
If a label looks different on your phone, look for the word 'Drafts' at the top of the gallery. Instagram renames and moves buttons from time to time, but drafts have stayed close to the photo picker.
Steps to find your Reels drafts
- Tap your profile picture to open your profile.
- Tap the Reels tab, the one with the play icon.
- Look for the Drafts tile. It shows first in the grid.
- Tap it and choose the draft you want to finish.
There's a second way in. Tap + (create), choose Reel and look for Drafts there. Both routes lead to the same list, so use whichever you remember.
Story drafts are a separate thing with their own rules, so I've covered them in how many Instagram story drafts you can save at once.
How to save a post or Reel as a draft
- While you're editing your post or Reel, tap the back arrow at the top left.
- Instagram asks what you'd like to do. Choose Save draft.
- Your draft now sits in the Drafts section for that type, ready for later.
Be careful with the other choice on that screen. If you tap Discard, the edit is thrown away, and there's no bin to pull it back from. When in doubt, save it. You can always delete a draft later.
Drafts are handy when you're writing a long caption, waiting for the right time to post, or batching a few posts in one sitting. They're less handy as long-term storage, for the reason below.
One small habit helps here. If you're writing a long caption, type it in your phone's notes app first and paste it into Instagram. Then, if the draft ever disappears, the words you spent the most time on are still safe, and you only have to redo the edit.
Where each kind of draft lives
| Draft type | Where to find it | Where it's stored |
|---|---|---|
| Post (photo or carousel) | + (create), then Post: Drafts or Manage at the top of the gallery | On the phone you made it on |
| Reel | Profile, Reels tab, Drafts tile first in the grid (or + then Reel) | On the phone you made it on |
| Story | A separate system, see the story drafts guide | See the story drafts guide |
The catch: drafts are saved to your phone, not your account
This is the one people learn the hard way. Instagram drafts are saved on the phone you made them on, not to your account. They won't appear on a second phone, and logging out, deleting the app or clearing its data can wipe them.
So if you're about to get a new phone, reinstall Instagram to fix a glitch, or log out to switch accounts, think about your drafts first. Anything important should be saved somewhere safer before you do it. For a Reel, finish the edit and save the video to your camera roll. For a photo post, make sure the original photos are still in your gallery and copy the caption into your notes app.
The same rule catches people on other apps too. If you also post on TikTok, the way it handles drafts is very similar, and I've explained how to find your TikTok drafts separately. Facebook does things a little differently, so here's how to find Facebook drafts as well.

Drafts not showing? Check these first
Before you assume a draft is lost, run through these. Most missing drafts turn up after one of them.
- Are you on the same phone? If you saved the draft on an old phone or a tablet, it's still only on that device.
- Are you in the right account? If you use more than one account on this phone, switch to the one you were on when you saved it and check again.
- Was it a story? Story drafts sit in their own place, away from post and Reels drafts.
- Did you tap Discard? It's easy to tap the wrong option when you're in a hurry, and a discarded edit isn't kept.
- Has the app been reinstalled or cleared? A reinstall, or a phone cleaner app that clears app data, can remove drafts along with everything else Instagram had stored.
- Is the app up to date? If the Drafts section has vanished after a glitch, update Instagram and restart your phone, then look again.
If none of those bring it back, the draft is almost certainly gone. Instagram doesn't keep a copy on its side, so there's no support request that can restore it. Start again from your original photos or clips, and save a backup this time.
Deleting drafts you don't need
- Open your Drafts, from the gallery for posts or the Reels tab for Reels.
- Tap Manage or Edit.
- Select the drafts you want to remove.
- Tap Discard and confirm.
A tidy drafts list makes the next search much quicker, and it means you won't open an old draft by mistake and post something you'd meant to bin.
What I'd do
I treat Instagram drafts as a scratch pad, not a safe. If a draft matters, I'd save the edited video or the photos and caption somewhere else the same day, so a reinstall or a new phone can't take it with it.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I see my drafts on Instagram?
Drafts are saved on the phone you made them on. If you're on a different phone, or you logged out, deleted the app or cleared its data, the drafts may be gone.
Can I see my Instagram drafts on another phone or a computer?
No. Drafts don't sync to your account, so they only show on the phone where you saved them.
Where are Reels drafts on Instagram?
Open your profile, tap the Reels tab and tap the Drafts tile at the start of the grid. You can also tap + then Reel and look for Drafts.
Can other people see my Instagram drafts?
No. Drafts are private. Nobody else can see them until you finish the post and share it.
How do I delete a draft on Instagram?
Open Drafts, tap Manage or Edit, select the drafts you want to remove and tap Discard.
