Can People See Your Saved Posts on Instagram?

No. Instagram says only you can see the posts you've saved, and the person who posted it can't tell you saved it. The one exception is a collaborative collection: anyone you've shared that collection with can see every post in it, add posts and even delete the whole collection.

Saving is one of the quietest things you can do on Instagram, and for most saves that's exactly how it works. But Instagram added collaborative collections, which turned saving into something you can share, and that's where people get caught out. Here's the full picture, straight from Instagram's Help Centre.

Who can see the posts you save

Instagram's own wording is simple: when you save a post, it's visible to you from a private section of your profile. Only you can see the posts you've saved, and when you save someone's post, they're not able to tell that you've saved it.

WhoCan they see your saves?
Your followersNo
The person who posted itNo, they can't tell you saved it
Anyone viewing your profileNo, saves sit in a private section
People in a collaborative collection with youYes, for posts in that shared collection

Your account being public or private doesn't change this. Instagram's comparison of public and private accounts covers who sees your posts, your followers and your profile details; your saved section isn't on that list because it's private either way.

The exception: collaborative collections

Instagram lets you create a collaborative collection for posts you save or share to a conversation. By design, collaborative collections allow you and others to see posts you've saved, while also letting them add posts to the collection. That's the point of the feature, but it's easy to forget which of your collections are shared.

The rules Instagram spells out are worth knowing before you share one:

  • People you share the collection with get a notification in their messages.
  • Anyone added later to an existing group chat can view collections already in that chat.
  • Anyone who can view the collection can save new posts to it or remove posts from it.
  • A collaborative collection can't be made private after it's been created.
  • Private collections you've already created can't be turned into shared ones.
  • Anyone who can view it can delete the whole collection, whoever created it, and the chat is told when it's deleted.

If you leave or are removed from the chat, you lose access to that chat's collaborative collection. That's the cleanest way out if you don't want to see or share it any more.

What happens with private accounts' posts in a shared collection

Here's a detail most people never hear about. If you add a post from a private account to a shared collection, Instagram says only people who follow that account will be able to see the post. Everyone else in the collection won't see it. And the person who uploaded the post isn't notified. So your shared collection can look different to different members.

How to see and manage your saved posts

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below How you use Instagram, tap Saved.

To save straight into a collection, tap and hold the Save icon under a post, then pick a collection or create a new one. For reels, tap Options and then Save.

Saving versus screenshots, shares and reposts

Saving is private, but nearby actions aren't always. Sharing a post to your story puts it in front of everyone who can see your story, so that's a public act, not a private one. Screenshots are a separate question, which I've answered in does Instagram notify when you screenshot. And if you're the creator wondering about shares of your own posts, here's how to see who shared your Instagram post.

Saved posts and deleted posts

One more rule from the collaborative collections page applies to saves in general: when a post is deleted by its creator, it's no longer visible to anyone on Instagram, and it disappears from collaborative collections too. Saving a post doesn't keep a copy for you. If something matters, such as a recipe or a set of instructions, note the details elsewhere, because a save is a bookmark, not a backup.

A quick privacy check you can do in two minutes

  1. Open Saved from your profile menu.
  2. Look at each collection and note which ones you made collaborative in a chat.
  3. Leave the chat, or delete the collection, for any shared collection you no longer want others to see.
  4. Move anything personal into a private collection instead.

How to tidy up what you've saved

Saved posts build up for years. If you'd like the private section to stay useful, sort it into private collections by topic: recipes, ideas for your business, places to visit. Private collections stay just as hidden as the main Saved area. Only make a collection collaborative when you've decided exactly who should see it, because once it's shared you can't make it private again.

My take

Save freely. Nobody can see your saves unless you've put them in a collaborative collection. Before you share a collection, though, remember the three rules that bite: it can't go private again, everyone in it can add or remove posts, and anyone in it can delete it. If privacy on Instagram matters to you more broadly, it's also worth reading how to hide your followers and following list, because that list is far more visible than your saves.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone see if I saved their Instagram post?

No. Instagram says when you save someone's post, they're not able to tell that you've saved it.

Can my followers see my saved posts on Instagram?

No. Saved posts sit in a private section of your profile that only you can see, unless you put them in a collaborative collection.

Who can see a collaborative collection on Instagram?

You and the people you shared it with in the conversation. They can see the posts, add or remove posts, and delete the collection.

Can I make a collaborative collection private again?

No. Instagram says a collaborative collection can't be made private after it's been created.

Does a private account owner know I added their post to a collection?

No. Instagram says the person who uploaded the post won't be notified, and only people who follow that private account can see it in the shared collection.
