How to Post a Link on Instagram (Where Links Work and Where They Don't)

To post a link on Instagram that people can click, add it to your profile (Edit profile, then Links, then Add link), put it on a Story with the link sticker, or send it in a direct message. Links typed into a post or reel caption don't turn into clickable links, which is why you see creators writing 'link in bio'.

So the honest answer to 'how do I post a link on Instagram' is that it depends on where you want it to live. Here's every place a link works, and the one place everyone tries first that doesn't.

PlaceClickable?Who sees itBest for
Profile (bio links)Yes, up to fiveAnyone on or off InstagramYour website, shop, booking page
Story link stickerYesWhoever can see your storyTime-limited offers, new blog posts
Direct messagesYesThe person or group you send it toSending a link to one customer
Post and reel captionsNoEveryone who sees the postTelling people where to find the link

The detail most people don't know: Instagram lets you add up to five links to your profile, not just one. Its Help Centre also points out that anyone, on or off Instagram, can see those links, so don't put anything there you wouldn't want public.

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Tap Links, then Add link.
  4. Paste the web address and give it a short title if you're asked for one.
  5. Tap Done.

To change the order, go back to Edit profile, tap Links, tap the options menu and choose Reorder links, then drag them into place. The first link is the one people notice most, so put your most important page at the top. Instagram's Help Centre notes this feature lives in the phone apps, not on a computer.

How to add a link to an Instagram Story

  1. Start a new Story and add your photo or video.
  2. Tap the sticker icon at the top.
  3. Choose the Link sticker.
  4. Paste your link and, if you like, change the sticker text to something like 'Read the guide'.
  5. Place the sticker somewhere it's easy to tap, then share.

Swipe-up links are gone. Instagram replaced them with the link sticker, so older guides telling you to reach a follower count for swipe-up are out of date. One limit to remember: if you plan to boost a Story as an ad, Instagram says Stories with link stickers aren't eligible. We go deeper on Story links in how to add a clickable link to an Instagram Story.

Paste the link into any chat and it becomes clickable for the person you send it to. This is handy for customer questions. Be aware that people are cautious about links from accounts they don't know, so if you're messaging someone new, explain who you are before you send a link.

Instagram keeps people on the app, so web addresses in post and reel captions stay as plain text. Some people copy the text and paste it into a browser, but most won't. That's why the standard approach is a clear line in the caption pointing to your profile: 'The full guide is the first link on my profile.' Being specific about which link helps when you've got several.

  • Put your single most important page first. Most taps go to the top link.
  • Give each link a clear title so people know where it goes.
  • Remove links to old offers so your profile doesn't send people to dead pages.
  • Match links to what you're posting about this week, and mention them in captions.
  • If you need more than five, a link-in-bio page can hold the rest. We compared options in link-in-bio tools for Instagram and TikTok.
What you want people to doWhere I'd put the link
Visit your website or shopFirst profile link, mentioned in captions
Read a new blog post this weekStory link sticker plus a caption pointing to it
Watch your YouTube videosA profile link to your channel, as shown in adding a YouTube link to your Instagram bio
Book a call or appointmentProfile link with a clear title such as 'Book a call'
Get help with an orderSend the link in a DM
  • A typo or missing part of the address. Open the link from your profile yourself to test it.
  • The site behind the link is down or blocks the Instagram in-app browser.
  • The link breaks Instagram's rules. Instagram may remove or refuse links it treats as spam or unsafe.
  • You're on a computer. Adding profile links is done in the phone app.

If Instagram shows an error when you save your profile, try a shorter, cleaner web address without tracking codes. Long addresses with lots of extra characters are more likely to be flagged.

Writing a caption that sends people to your link

Since the caption can't hold a working link, its job is to make people want to tap through. Say what they'll get, then exactly where to find it. 'The full checklist is the second link on my profile' works better than a vague 'link in bio', especially once you have several links. If you're running a Story at the same time, mention it: 'Tap the link in my Story'.

My advice

Use all three clickable spots together. Keep your profile links current, add a link sticker whenever you share something new in Stories, and point to them clearly in every caption. That combination gets far more clicks than hoping someone copies a web address from a caption.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put a clickable link in an Instagram post?

No. Links in post and reel captions aren't clickable. Use your profile links or a Story link sticker instead, and point people to them in the caption.

How many links can I add to my Instagram bio?

Instagram lets you add up to five websites to your profile.

How do I add a link to my Instagram Story?

Add your photo or video, tap the sticker icon, choose the Link sticker, paste your link and share.

Do I need a lot of followers to add links on Instagram?

No. Profile links and the Story link sticker aren't tied to a follower count, unlike the old swipe-up feature.
