How to Outline Text in Canva (Outline, Hollow and Splice)

To outline text in Canva, select the text box, choose Effects on the toolbar and pick Outline from the Style group. Use the sliders to adjust it. If you want see-through letters instead, Canva lists Hollow under its Colour effects, so try that one too.

White text on a busy photo vanishes. Thin lettering on a pale background does the same. A coloured outline is one of the oldest fixes in the design book, and in Canva it's an effect you switch on rather than something you build by hand.

I'll show you where Canva's help centre puts it, how to adjust it, and what to reach for when you want a different look, such as letters that are hollow inside.

Outlining text in Canva with the Outline effect

Outline lives in Canva's text effects. These are the steps from Canva's help article, which are the same idea on a computer or in the mobile app:

  1. Click or tap the text box so it's selected.
  2. Select Effects on the toolbar.
  3. In the side panel, look under Style and choose Outline.
  4. Adjust it using the sliders or by typing a value.

Canva's help says the controls cover intensity, colour, direction and transparency, and that you can drag a slider or input a value. Exact slider labels differ between versions, so if yours reads a little differently, trust what you see on screen.

Changing the colour of a Canva text outline

The default colour is rarely the one you want. Canva's help gives this route: select the text, then use the effect colour option, which sits next to the Effects button in the toolbar and also appears inside the effects panel. Pick a shade from your brand colours, or a clear contrast with the text itself.

A simple rule: dark outline on light letters, light outline on dark letters. Two similar colours make the outline pointless, and you'll end up with a blur.

Hollow and Splice text effects in Canva compared with Outline

People searching for outlines often mean one of two different looks. Canva's help sorts its effects into three groups:

Effect groupEffects inside it
StyleDrop, Glow, Echo, Outline, Background, Splice
ColourHollow, Glitch, Neon
ShapeCurve
  • Outline draws a line round the letters, and the letters keep their fill colour.
  • Hollow sits under Colour, and it's the one to try if you want see-through letters with just a line showing.
  • Splice sits beside Outline under Style, so it turns up in the same panel and is easy to pick by mistake.

The help centre doesn't describe how each one looks, so click through all three on your own text. It takes a minute and it's the quickest way to choose.

Why a gradient might ignore your Canva text outline

If you've coloured the text with a gradient and the effect looks wrong, there's a reason. Canva's help says Neon, Hollow, Glitch and Splice may only show the first gradient colour, and some effects might override the gradient entirely. Its advice is to apply the effect first, then add the gradient. For complex effects like Neon or Glitch it suggests solid colours.

Choosing a Canva outline that stays readable

An outline is a tool for contrast, so start with the problem you're solving. If the words are lost against the photo, pick an outline that sits clearly apart from both the letters and the picture behind them. If the words are readable but look flat, a softer outline in a brand colour is enough.

I like to make the text a sensible size first and add the outline last. Doing it the other way round tempts you to crank the outline up to rescue tiny lettering, and that's when graphics start to look amateur. Duplicate the page, try two outline colours side by side, and keep the one you can read fastest.

Taking a text outline off in Canva

If you've changed your mind, select the text box and open Effects again. Canva's help says that when an effect is active, there's a Remove effect option at the bottom of the panel. Selecting it takes the outline off and leaves the text itself alone.

Using Canva text outlines on social graphics and thumbnails

For creators and small businesses, outlines do their best work on images with text over a photo: video thumbnails, quote cards, sale announcements, event posters. A few habits make them look professional rather than cluttered:

  • Keep the outline thin enough that the letter shape still reads. A heavy outline on small text turns into a smudge.
  • Use one outline colour across a whole set of graphics so your feed looks like one brand.
  • Check the text on your phone before you post. If you can't read it at arm's length, make the outline stronger or the text bigger.
  • Leave plenty of space around each line. Outlines add visual weight.

If you can't find the Canva outline effect

  • Select the text box first. The Effects button only appears when text is selected.
  • Look under Style in the effects panel, not under Colour. That's where Outline is listed.
  • Check you've selected a text box rather than a picture of text, because effects belong to text boxes.
  • Update the app or reload the browser tab if the panel looks empty.

If it's still missing, Canva's help centre can check your account and the design.
