To make a gradient in Canva, select the text, shape or background, click the colour tile in the toolbar and choose a style from the Gradients section. For your own colours, add a new colour, open the Gradient tab and add up to 10 colour stops. Gradients are free for all Canva users.
A good gradient can make a flat social post feel modern, give a headline some depth or turn a plain background into something on brand. In Canva, gradients are built into the colour picker, and you can even fade a colour into transparency.
How to add a ready-made gradient
- Select the element you want to colour: text, a shape, a frame or the page background.
- Click the colour tile in the editor toolbar.
- Scroll down to the Gradients section. Hover over a gradient to see its name.
- Click the one you want to apply.
How to make a custom gradient with your own colours
- Select the element and click the colour tile.
- Under Document colours, click the plus to add a new colour.
- Open the Gradient tab.
- Under Gradient colours, click the plus to add colours. Canva allows up to 10.
- Drag the colour stops to change where each colour sits.
- Choose a style under Styles, such as a straight or circular blend.
Two or three colours almost always look better than ten. Pick colours that sit close together, such as two shades of your brand blue, for a subtle look, or two contrasting brand colours for something bolder.
Where you can use gradients
| Works with gradients | Doesn't work yet |
|---|---|
| Text in designs | Charts and sheet cells |
| Backgrounds | Polls and quiz elements |
| Shapes | Inline text in Canva Docs |
| Table cells | Some text effects |
| Frames | |
| Brand Kit colours |
In Canva Docs, gradient text only works inside Design Blocks and Banners, not in your normal paragraphs.
How to fade a colour to transparent
This is a lovely effect for putting text over a photo: the colour starts solid at the bottom and fades away so the image shows through at the top.
- Select the shape or element and open the colour tile.
- Add a new colour and go to the Gradient tab.
- Click one of the colour stops and lower its transparency to 0%.
- Keep the other stop solid in the same colour.
Canva's tip is to use the same base colour for both the solid and transparent stops. If you fade a dark blue into transparent white, you'll get a murky grey band in the middle instead of a clean fade.
The catch: gradient text can look wrong after downloading
This catches people out when sending files. Canva says PDF and SVG downloads do support gradient text, but the Preview app on a Mac may show it as a solid colour. Your design hasn't broken; the viewer just can't display it. If you need an exact match, export as PNG or JPG, or check the file in a different app. A couple of text styles can also misbehave: Canva notes underline, strikethrough, superscript and subscript may only pick up the first gradient colour.
Add a gradient to your brand kit
If you use a signature gradient, save it so you aren't rebuilding it every time. Canva lets you apply gradients to brand colours in your Brand Kit, so the whole team can pick it from the colour panel. It's a small step that keeps every post looking like it came from the same business.
Gradient ideas for business posts
- Quote posts: a soft two-tone background in your brand colours with white text on top.
- Headlines: gradient text on one key word in a heading, rather than the whole line.
- Photo overlays: a dark-to-transparent fade at the bottom of a photo so a caption is easy to read.
- Frames: an empty frame filled with a gradient makes a quick, colourful placeholder for a coming-soon post.
- Section dividers: a thin gradient bar between sections of a carousel or presentation.
Whichever you choose, save it as part of your Brand Kit so it's there next time. A recognisable gradient can become part of your visual identity in the same way a colour or font does, and it's one of the easiest ways to make a simple template feel like yours.

Design tips for gradients that look good
- Keep gradients behind text subtle so the words stay readable.
- Use one gradient style across a series of posts for a consistent feed.
- Try a gradient fill on an empty frame for a quick, colourful placeholder.
- Check contrast on a phone screen. Light text on the light end of a gradient often disappears.
- Avoid rainbow gradients on business content unless they're part of your brand.
My verdict
Gradients are free, quick and built right into Canva's colour picker. Use a preset for speed, build a custom one with two or three brand colours for a signature look, and use the transparent fade for text over photos. If a gradient looks flat in a PDF on a Mac, it's the viewer, not your design.
