A movie poster maker gives you film-style templates with a key image, a title treatment, a tagline and a credits block, ready to print or post. Some are design tools with poster templates, some generate the poster with AI and some sit inside larger creative platforms. Nine options follow in no particular order.
A student short heading to a festival. A film club's monthly screening. A birthday party with a movie theme. A movie poster is the first thing anyone sees of a film, and it has to work as a thumbnail and on a wall.
The nine tools below cover design editors with film templates and AI poster generators. They're listed alphabetically and in no particular order, and every description comes from the vendor's own website, read this week. If you're making films for a living, my look at freelance filmmaker income covers the business side.
Movie poster makers at a glance
I checked the free plan column on each tool's own website or store listing, as of Oct 2026. Yes means the page says the tool, or a plan, account or version of it, is free. Trial only means a time-limited trial. Not stated means the pages I read named neither, even where there's a button inviting you to try it, so check the vendor's page before you sign up.

Your film's title isn't protected by copyright
The U.S. Copyright Office says words and short phrases such as names, titles and slogans aren't copyrightable, because they contain too little authorship to qualify.
That cuts both ways for a poster. You can't stop someone else using the same title through copyright, and nobody can stop you on copyright grounds either, though a famous title can still be a brand someone owns. The artwork is different: an original key image and title design can be protected, so that's where to put the effort. Search the title before you commit, and avoid copying the look of a real studio poster.
Want AI doing the heavy lifting in your marketing?
I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.
Template, AI poster or designer later?
A template gives you a proven layout for a film poster, so you only need to swap in your image, title and credits.
An AI poster tool creates the key art from a prompt or a photo, which helps when you don't have a strong still from the shoot.
Hiring a designer later makes sense once the film is selected for a festival or heading for release, when the poster has to carry the marketing.
Six parts of a film poster people expect
- One strong key image.
- A title you can read from a distance.
- A short tagline that hints at the story.
- The main cast or director, if they help.
- A credits block at the bottom.
- A release or screening date, when you have one.
Signs your poster isn't working yet
- The title disappears at thumbnail size. Make it bigger.
- You can't tell the genre. Change the image.
- Two images compete. Pick one.
- The credits are bigger than the title. Shrink them.

My plain advice on making a movie poster
Pick one image that tells people what kind of film they're about to watch, and build everything else around it. Horror, comedy and drama all have visual habits audiences recognise in a second, so lean into the genre rather than fighting it. Then shrink the poster to thumbnail size and check the title still reads.
Your poster will often be seen as a tiny image on a phone, so my tips on eye-catching thumbnails apply here too.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a movie poster for free?
Use a free movie poster template, add your key image, title, tagline and credits, then download it.
Can AI make a movie poster?
Yes. AI poster tools create key art from a prompt, a photo or a short description of the story.
Is a film title protected by copyright?
No. The U.S. Copyright Office says titles aren't copyrightable, though a well-known title can still be a protected brand.
What goes on a movie poster?
A key image, the title, a tagline, the main names and a credits block, plus a date if you have one.
What size is a movie poster?
Sizes vary by country and use, so check what the cinema, festival or printer asks for before you export.
Can I put my own photo on a movie poster?
Yes. Many poster makers let you upload a photo and style it to match a film genre.
