To make a GIF in Canva, animate your design with the Animate button, then choose Share, Download and select GIF as the file type. Canva's help says GIFs can have a transparent background, and that the length limit depends on which version of Canva you use.
A short looping animation is one of the quickest ways to make a plain post move. A sale badge that pulses, a logo that slides in, a product shot with a sparkle: they all catch the eye in a feed that's mostly stills.
Canva doesn't have a separate GIF button on the home screen. You build the movement in a normal design and then choose GIF when you download it. Here's how Canva's help centre describes each part.
Building the movement for a Canva GIF
A GIF is just a design that moves, so the first job is animation. Canva's help says to select the elements you want to animate, then choose Animate on the toolbar above the editor. A few things to know:
- The panel has Page, Element and Text tabs, and the Text tab appears when a text box is selected.
- Hover over an option to preview it, then select it to apply it.
- You can choose a speed preset of Slow, Medium or Fast, or set exact intro and outro durations.
- Each animation can be up to 10 seconds long.
I've written a separate walkthrough on animating in Canva, so here I'll stay with the export side. Keep your first attempt simple: one or two moving elements read better than a screen full of motion.
Downloading your Canva design as a GIF
Once the movement looks right, the steps from Canva's help are:
- Open the design. If you like, select the Preview icon first to watch it through.
- Select Share, then Download.
- Choose GIF as the file type.
- Set the Size. Canva offers preset multipliers or a custom size.
- Turn on Transparent background if you want the GIF to sit on other colours.
- Choose All, This Page or Custom for which pages to include, then click Download.
There's a Save download settings switch too. Turn it on and Canva remembers your choices for next time.
How long a Canva GIF can run and how big it can be
Canva's help gives limits that depend on which version of Canva you use:
| Canva version | Longest GIF | Biggest GIF size |
|---|---|---|
| Canva Free | Up to 1 minute | 1280 by 720 pixels |
| Canva Pro, Teams, for Nonprofits and Education | Up to 2 minutes | 1920 by 1080 pixels |
For most posts you'll sit well inside the lower limit. A loop that lasts a few seconds is plenty, and smaller sizes load faster for the people viewing them.
Making a transparent Canva GIF for logos and badges
The Transparent background toggle in the GIF options is the neat trick here. It lets you export an animated logo or sticker without a white box behind it, so it can drop onto a coloured banner or a web page. It works best when the page itself has no background fill, so check that the page isn't carrying a colour you've forgotten about.
Why a Canva GIF keeps moving and a PNG doesn't
Canva's help says to download animated designs as videos or GIFs to keep the animation. A PNG or JPG is a still picture, so it'll show a single frame. If you want movement in an email, on your website or in a message, choose GIF. If you need sound, pick MP4 instead.

Planning a short Canva GIF that works in a business feed
The best business GIFs do one thing. Show the offer, reveal the logo, or point at the button. Before you animate, decide what the viewer should notice first and let only that element move, while the rest of the page stays still. Text should stay on screen long enough to read at normal speed, so choose Slow or Medium rather than Fast for any words.
Check the finished loop on your phone, because that's where most people will see it. If the movement feels jumpy or the text is hard to catch, adjust the speed preset and download again. It only takes a minute, and it's a lot kinder to your audience than a frantic flash.
Choosing between a Canva GIF and an MP4
- Choose a GIF for a short, silent loop such as a logo reveal, a button or a reaction.
- Choose an MP4 when you need quality settings of 480p, 720p, 1080p or 4K, a longer piece, or music.
- If you've used licensed audio and plan to post on social media, Canva's help says to verify your licence before you download, to avoid copyright claims.

If your Canva GIF won't download or looks wrong
- If an error icon appears on the preview, Canva's help points to its My video won't playback troubleshooting steps.
- If the GIF has no movement, go back to the editor and check you've applied an animation to the page or elements.
- If there's a coloured box behind a logo, check the Transparent background toggle and the page fill.
- If the file looks small or soft, check the Size setting in the download panel.
Canva's help centre can look at your account if none of that fixes it.
