How to Animate in Canva (Pages, Elements and Text)

To animate in Canva, select a page, element or text box, choose Animate on the toolbar and click an option to apply it. Canva's help says each animation can last up to 10 seconds and that you need to download a video or GIF to keep the movement.

Static graphics get scrolled past. A headline that slides in, a photo that drifts, a logo that settles into place: a little movement makes people look twice. The good news is that Canva builds animation into the normal editor, so there's nothing extra to install.

This page follows Canva's help centre for animating a page, a single element or a line of text, then covers timing, click-by-click reveals in a presentation and how to export without losing the movement.

Animating a page or element in Canva with the Animate button

Canva's help describes the basic route like this:

  1. Select the page or the elements you want to move.
  2. Choose Animate on the toolbar above the editor.
  3. Pick a tab: Page, Element or Text. The Text tab appears when a text box is selected.
  4. Hover over an option to preview it, then select it to apply it.

Page animations move everything on the page in one go, while element animations let you pick which pieces move. For a clean look I usually animate one headline and one image rather than everything at once.

Setting the speed and length of a Canva animation

Once you've chosen an animation, you can choose a speed preset of Slow, Medium or Fast, or set precise intro and outro durations. Canva's help says you can combine General or Suggested animations with Add-on effects, and that some options are marked with a Try Canva Pro icon because they need Canva Pro, Teams, Education or Nonprofits.

There are two limits to keep in your head. Each animation can run up to 10 seconds, and a design can hold up to 50 animations. That's generous, and if you ever hit the ceiling it's a sign the design has too much going on.

Using Canva's Show element timing to order your animations

When several things move, order matters. Canva's help says to select the animated element, choose More on the floating toolbar, then select Show element timing. You can reorder the element tiles in the thumbnail view and adjust durations with the drag handles. A neat sequence is headline first, picture second, button last.

Making Canva elements appear on click in a presentation

If you present live, you might want points to appear one at a time. Canva's help says to turn on Appear on click, then go to Presentation settings and select Click order. Drag each element into the order you want, using the drag handles. It's good for walking a client through a proposal without giving away the last slide first.

Magic Animate and other quick ways to animate in Canva

There's also a shortcut called Magic Animate, which the help centre describes as applying animations instantly to a design. It's a fast starting point when you have a page full of elements and no time. You can always switch to the Animate panel afterwards to change one piece.

There's also a motion option for dragging an element along a path of your choosing, which the help centre covers under creating an animation. Both are worth a look once the basics feel comfortable.

Changing or removing a Canva animation

To swap one, select the page or element, choose Animate and pick a different animation. To strip it out, select Remove animation in the Animate panel. Nothing else about the design changes.

Saving an animated Canva design so it keeps moving

This catches people out. A still image export loses all the motion. Canva's help says to download animated designs as videos or GIFs to keep the animation, and that you can also share them straight to social media or schedule them. Choose a GIF for a short silent loop, or an MP4 when you want a longer piece. My walkthrough on making a GIF in Canva covers the download panel step by step.

Canva animation ideas for small business and creators

  • A sale or event graphic where the date slides in last, so the eye lands there.
  • A product photo with a gentle movement and a short line of text underneath.
  • A logo reveal for the start or end of a video.
  • A before-and-after post where the second image appears after the first.
  • A quote card where each line arrives in turn, slowly enough to read.

Keep brand fonts and colours consistent across a set so the movement feels like part of your style. If you're planning a run of posts around these graphics, my notes on writing and scheduling an Instagram post for your business help with the caption side, and my Canva review covers who the tool suits.

If your Canva animation isn't playing or is locked

  • Use Preview to watch the design play. The editor itself may show movement only when you preview.
  • If an option shows a Try Canva Pro icon, it needs one of the versions Canva's help names.
  • If an element won't move, select it directly and check the Element tab, not just the Page tab.
  • If the downloaded picture is still, you've saved a still format. Download a video or GIF instead.

When something still misbehaves, Canva's help centre is the best place to ask, since its team can look at your design.
