You can't reliably tell if someone has muted you on Messenger. Muting only switches off notifications on their side, and Messenger's help pages don't describe any sign shown to the other person. The delivered and seen icons and Active Status can hint at what's going on, but none of them proves a mute.
You've sent a message, nobody has answered, and now you're wondering whether they've quietly muted you. It happens to everyone, and for anyone who uses Messenger to reach customers, clients or collaborators it can feel personal very quickly. I went through Messenger's help pages to see whether there's a way to check, and the honest result is worth knowing before you start reading signs into silence.
Can you check if someone muted you on Messenger?
No. Messenger's help centre treats muting as a notification setting. It says you can turn notification alerts off for all conversations or for just a single conversation, and that's the whole job of the feature. It's a switch on the muter's own phone or computer. I couldn't find any help page that says the other person is told, or that any label, icon or badge appears on your side when you've been muted.
That matters, because plenty of websites claim there are tell-tale signs. If Messenger's own help doesn't describe a signal, anything else is guesswork. A muted chat looks the same to you as a chat with someone who simply hasn't opened the app today.
What muting does on Messenger
Here's how the person on the other end mutes you, using the steps from Messenger's help pages. Seeing them might help you realise how ordinary the setting is.
Muting one chat on Android
- From Chats, tap and hold the conversation.
- Tap Mute, then choose the option that matches what you want to mute.
- Choose how long you want to turn off notifications for, then tap OK.
Muting one chat on iPhone
- From Chats, swipe left on the conversation.
- Tap More, then tap Mute.
- Choose how long you want to turn off notifications for.
For group chats, Messenger's help adds that if you turn off notifications you stop receiving alerts for messages, message reactions and mentions in that group. Nothing in those steps changes what you can send. Your message still arrives in the chat; it just doesn't buzz their phone. My own walkthrough of muting someone on Messenger covers the same steps from the other side.
Reading the Messenger sent, delivered and seen icons
The icons next to your message are the only built-in feedback you get, so it helps to know what each one says. According to Messenger's help pages they appear on the right side of the message:
- A blue circle means your message is sending.
- A blue circle with a check means it has been sent.
- A filled-in blue circle with a check means it has been delivered.
- A small version of the person's profile picture below the message means they've seen it.
If you want the full picture, my guide to what Delivered means on Messenger goes through each icon. The key point for this question is that none of them says anything about notifications. A delivered message that gets no reply could be muted, ignored, unseen or simply waiting for a busy person. The icons can't separate those cases.
Messenger signs that people wrongly read as a mute
Several things look like a mute but are something else. Going through them can save you a lot of worrying.
Their Active Status has gone
Messenger's help says Active Status shows people you're friends with when they're active or were recently active, and that it can take a while to update. If you can't see someone's Active Status, the help gives two reasons: they turned off their Active Status, or they blocked you. A mute isn't on that list. It's also worth knowing that if you've switched your own Active Status off, you won't see anyone else's.
They've restricted you
Restricting is a separate tool. Messenger's help says that when someone restricts a person, they won't get notifications when that person messages them, they won't see the conversation in their Chats list, and the other person isn't told. That sounds like a mute with extra steps, which is why they get confused. I've covered it in a separate explainer on what Restrict means on Messenger.
They've blocked you
Messenger's help says profiles won't be notified when they're blocked. A blocked person can't message, call or find the other person's profile on Messenger or Facebook chat. If your messages seem to go nowhere and you can't find their profile, that's a different situation from a mute. You can read about the wording Messenger uses in why Messenger says user unavailable.

Muted, restricted or blocked on Messenger: how they differ
| Setting | What Messenger's help pages say | Is the other person told? |
|---|---|---|
| Muted | Turns off notifications for one chat or for all chats | The help pages don't say so |
| Restricted | No notifications, chat leaves the Chats list, Active Status and read status hidden from the restricted person | The help says no |
| Blocked | The blocked profile can't message, call or find your profile on Messenger or Facebook chat | The help says no |
Only the last two have a stated effect on what the other person can see. That's why a mute is the hardest one of the three to spot, and why I'd treat any claim to the contrary with caution.
What to do if a Messenger contact has gone quiet
Rather than trying to work out whether you've been muted, I'd suggest a few calmer moves.
- Check the icon under your message. If you can see their profile picture below it, they've seen it, so they know it's there.
- Wait a sensible amount of time. Plenty of people leave Messenger alone for days.
- Try another route. For clients and suppliers, an email or a phone call is more reliable than a chat thread that might be on silent.
- Send one clear follow-up that makes it easy to reply with a single word, then leave it. If they've deliberately muted the conversation, repeated messages won't help the relationship.
If you run a small business, it's a good habit to keep important conversations somewhere that doesn't depend on notifications at all. Messenger is great for quick questions but poor as the only record of an order or a deadline. If you can't remember how to find the person at all, my guide to finding someone on Messenger is worth a look.
If you want to know who has muted you on Messenger
There's no list. No setting in Messenger shows a list of people who've muted you, and I'd steer clear of any app or website that claims to build one. Third-party tools like that ask for your login details, which puts your account at risk, and they can't see anything Messenger doesn't expose. If you're worried about your account, use Messenger's own help centre. If someone is bothering you, report it inside the app, and if you're in danger, contact the police.

Frequently asked questions
Can you tell if someone muted you on Messenger?
No. Messenger's help pages describe muting as a notification setting and don't say the other person is told or shown any sign.
Does Messenger notify someone when you mute them?
I couldn't find any help page saying it does. The help only explains that muting turns off notifications for the chat or chats you choose.
Does a delivered message mean I'm not muted?
No. Delivered only tells you the message reached their account. It says nothing about whether their notifications are switched on.
Is not seeing Active Status a sign of a mute?
Not according to the help pages. They say you may not see Active Status because the person turned it off or blocked you.
What's the difference between muting and restricting on Messenger?
Muting turns off notifications. Restricting also removes the chat from the Chats list and hides online and read status from the restricted person.
