How to Hide Your Instagram Account From Contacts: What Works

Instagram's help centre doesn't describe a single switch that hides your account from other people's contact lists. What you can do is stop your own contacts syncing: in the app go to Profile, Menu, Meta Account, Your information and permissions, then Upload contacts, and toggle off Connect contacts. You can also delete contacts you've already synced from a computer.

Wanting to stay out of the way of old colleagues, an ex or a client you'd rather keep at arm's length is completely reasonable. Instagram makes it easy to find people through contacts, and it isn't obvious how much of that you control. I'd rather be straight with you about what Instagram's own pages cover than promise a hide button that isn't there.

So this page covers what Instagram's help centre does describe: turning off your own contact syncing, deleting what you've synced, and switching off account suggestions on your profile. It also says plainly what the help pages don't say.

What Instagram says about syncing contacts and finding people

Instagram's help centre says you can find and follow your Facebook friends and device contacts who are already on Instagram. That's the feature behind 'people you may know'. It works from the contacts you choose to share from your own device. The help pages I read don't describe a setting that stops another person's synced contacts from matching you, so I can't tell you there's one.

Turning off contacts syncing on your own Instagram account

Disconnecting contacts syncing is for stopping Instagram making recommendations based on your device's contact list. Instagram's help page gives these steps for the app on Android and iPhone:

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Tap Meta Account, then tap Your information and permissions.
  4. Tap Upload contacts, then select the profile you want to control contacts for.
  5. Tap the toggle next to Connect contacts to turn off contact syncing.
  6. Tap Disconnect.

Instagram's page says it's gradually updating people to Meta Accounts, so you may see Accounts Centre or Meta Account settings as the place to manage your settings. Screens can differ slightly.

Why Instagram contacts can come back after you turn syncing off

Here's the catch Instagram spells out. Your contact list is periodically synced, and your contacts will be re-uploaded the next time Instagram syncs, unless you also go to your device settings and turn off contacts syncing on all devices logged in to Instagram. So it's two jobs: switch it off in Instagram, and switch it off on the phone or tablet itself.

Deleting contacts you've already synced to Instagram

Turning syncing off doesn't delete contacts that were synced earlier. To remove them, Instagram says to turn off contacts syncing on every device logged in and then delete the synced contacts from a computer:

  1. Log in to Instagram.com on a computer.
  2. Click your profile picture on the left to go to your profile.
  3. Click Edit profile, then click See more in Meta Account.
  4. Click Your information and permissions, then click Manage contacts. If you have several linked profiles, pick the one you want first.
  5. Click Delete all, then click Delete to confirm.

Two honest limits from Instagram's page. You can't delete individual contacts, only everything at once. And it may take up to 90 days to complete the deletion after it begins. During that time, Instagram may still make recommendations based on your contacts, and the page says you can block specific people if you don't want to see them recommended in the meantime.

Turning off account suggestions on your Instagram profile

This is a different feature, and people often mix them up. When someone taps Follow on your profile, Instagram shows them suggestions of similar profiles, such as mutual friends or people they might know. If you'd rather not show that, you can turn it off, on desktop or in a mobile browser:

I build the systems that handle the boring 80 percent, so you get your week back. Done properly, with the human kept in.

  1. Go to Instagram.com and click your profile picture on the left to go to your profile.
  2. Click Edit profile.
  3. Click the toggle next to Show account suggestions on profiles to turn it off, then click Submit.

Instagram warns that when you do this, you also won't appear as a suggestion on someone else's profile. Instagram describes this as being for suggestions that show up after tapping Follow. It doesn't say it hides you from contact matching, so don't count on it for that.

Choosing which Instagram steps fit your situation

What you wantWhat Instagram's help pages offer

When you want to keep one person away from your Instagram

If your real worry is one particular person, blocking is a more direct tool than anything contact-related. Instagram's help pages describe blocking, and my guide on what happens to messages when you block someone on Instagram explains the effect on your chats. If someone is harassing or threatening you, report them to Instagram and, if you're in danger, contact the police.

For a business, remember the flip side: if customers find you through their contacts, hiding may limit your reach. Many small shops are happy to be found this way. Decide which matters more before you change anything. My article on whether Instagram follows accounts automatically may also help you understand what the app does and doesn't do on its own.
