iMessage suits people whose friends and family are mostly on iPhone, because it's built into Messages and encrypted end to end between Apple devices. WhatsApp suits anyone with contacts on Android or abroad, because it works the same on every phone and encrypts personal chats and calls for everyone. Mixed group of friends? WhatsApp is the safer default.
Blue bubbles or green ones: Apple's own support page explains what that colour means, and it changes how private your chat is. I read Apple's guide to iMessage, RCS and SMS, plus WhatsApp's home and privacy pages.

How iMessage works
Apple's support page says iMessage sends messages to other iPhones and Apple devices over Wi-Fi or mobile data. You can send high-resolution photos and videos, documents, links, Tapbacks and effects, with read receipts and typing indicators. Messages show in blue bubbles, and Apple says iMessage conversations are encrypted end to end, with a lock icon at the top.
Message someone without an Apple device and your iPhone switches to RCS or SMS, which show as green bubbles. Apple says encrypted RCS is in beta from iOS 26.5, but only when every person's network provider supports it. Plain SMS and MMS messages aren't end-to-end encrypted at all.
How WhatsApp works
WhatsApp describes itself as simple, reliable, private messaging and calling, free and available all over the world, with a note that data charges may apply. Its pages say personal messages and calls are protected by end-to-end encryption, so only you and the person you're talking to can read or listen.
There's more around the chats too: groups, channels you can follow, status updates, Meta AI and parental controls. WhatsApp also has a Business app for companies who talk to customers there.
WhatsApp's privacy page also lets you choose who can see when you're online and when you were last active. That's handy if you use it for work and don't want clients seeing you're online late at night.
The green bubble gap
This is the detail I'd weigh most. With iMessage, the protection you get depends on who you're messaging. An iPhone to iPhone chat is end-to-end encrypted. A chat with an Android friend may not be, depending on your network provider and theirs. WhatsApp encrypts personal chats the same way whichever phone the other person has.
Backups are the other thing to check. WhatsApp's privacy page says you can turn on encrypted backups to extend its encryption to messages saved in iCloud or Google Drive. It's off until you switch it on, so it's worth doing today.
Who each app suits
iMessage suits people whose whole circle is on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and who want messaging that's simply there without another app. WhatsApp suits families split across iPhone and Android, people with friends or colleagues abroad, and small businesses talking to customers. If you're curious about the data side, here's how much data a WhatsApp video call uses, and for businesses, my guide on adding WhatsApp Business to your website.

My advice on iMessage or WhatsApp
Use both for what they're good at. Keep iMessage for one-to-one chats with iPhone friends, where it's encrypted and effortless. Move any group that includes an Android user, and any conversation you'd hate a stranger to read, to WhatsApp, and switch on its encrypted backups. That one setting is easy to miss, and it makes a real difference to how private your history is.

Yes. Apple says iMessage conversations are encrypted end to end between Apple devices, shown by a lock icon at the top.

Is WhatsApp free?
WhatsApp says it offers free messaging and calling around the world, though data charges may apply.
Are WhatsApp backups encrypted?
Only if you turn them on. WhatsApp's privacy page says encrypted backups extend its protection to chats saved in iCloud or Google Drive.
