How to Find Contacts on TikTok (and Why Some Friends Don't Show Up)

If a friend you know is on TikTok doesn't appear, it's usually their settings, not yours. TikTok only matches people who've added their phone number or email to TikTok and left Contacts switched on in their suggestion settings.

How to find contacts on TikTok, step by step

1. Open TikTok and tap Profile at the bottom.
2. Tap the Add friends button next to Share profile.
3. If it's your first time, tap Find next to Contacts and follow the steps to allow TikTok to access your contacts.
4. If you've synced before, tap Contacts.
5. Tap Follow next to anyone you want to follow.

TikTok's Privacy Center is firm on one point: TikTok doesn't access your phone contacts unless you explicitly grant permission. Syncing is optional, and you can undo it.

Why some of your contacts don't show up

This is the part that confuses people. TikTok Support says it may show you someone from your contacts when all of these are true:

• They've turned on Contacts in their Suggest your account to others setting.
• They've added their phone number or email address to their TikTok account.
• You have that phone number or email address in your phone contacts.
• You've chosen to sync your phone contacts in the Sync contacts and Facebook friends setting.

Miss any one of those and they won't appear, even if they post every day. So if your sister uses TikTok with an email you don't have saved, or she's switched Contacts off, she won't be in your list.

Syncing your contacts also makes you findable

Syncing works in both directions, so think about it before you tap Allow. TikTok Support says that if you sync phone contacts, your account may also be suggested to others if you've turned on Contacts in the Suggest your account to others setting.

And here's the setting most people never check: TikTok says the Suggest your account to others options are turned on by default if you're aged 18 or older. That covers Contacts, Facebook friends, and people who open or send links to you.

If you'd rather find people without being found, you can switch those off in Settings and privacy, then Privacy, then Suggest your account to others. TikTok adds that even with them all off, your account may still be suggested to people you follow, interact with or share mutual connections with.

Facebook friends work the same way

The Sync contacts and Facebook friends setting covers both. TikTok says it may suggest someone you're friends with on Facebook if they've turned on Facebook friends in their Suggest your account to others setting, and you've both chosen to sync your Facebook friends list. TikTok also says it keeps suggesting Facebook friends after your first sync, so you don't need to sync again to see new ones.

How to stop syncing contacts on TikTok

1. Tap Profile at the bottom.
2. Tap the Menu button at the top, then Settings and privacy.
3. Tap Privacy.
4. Tap Sync contacts and Facebook friends.
5. Turn Sync contacts off. TikTok says this also turns off contact access in your device settings.

Turning sync off isn't enough on its own

TikTok spells this out. If you remove access or turn off syncing, it stops syncing new contacts, but it'll continue to suggest accounts based on the contacts you synced before. To clear them, remove them as well.

1. Go to Profile, then Menu, then Settings and privacy.
2. Tap Privacy, then Sync contacts and Facebook friends.
3. Tap Remove previously synced contacts.
4. Tap Remove to confirm.

A word for small businesses

If you've set up TikTok for your business on your own phone, syncing contacts can put your business account in front of your personal contacts, and the other way round.
